If i dont get THE stevenat moment in endgame to solidify stevanat's canonity these hands are gonna swing
Time for me to go off on a long monologue about why Age of Ultron is important to Romanogers and their individual character development. 99% of all marvel fans can agree that bringing in Hulktasha was a disaster of epic proportions, and while I would absolutely say that it was an objectively bad choice in writing and should never have been in put in to begin with, since it IS in mcu canon let’s take a look at how it furthers the good ship romanogers.
First, let’s remember that this is coming on the heels of the fall of SHIELD. Natasha, perhaps more severely than anyone else, had her world turned upside down by its destruction. She was a girl who was told all her life she would never belong, but then she found a home and a family in SHIELD, and more than that she found people like Fury who believed in her and Clint who knew she could be a better version of herself. So when her home shattered to reveal a foundation of Hydra lies, that devastated her. When Winter Soldier ends, she leaves Steve with the intention to go rediscover and remake herself. She’s still got a family in her friends that she loves, but she’s adrift once more - a soldier without orders. So when AOU begins, we see her with a mission, but still reeling. She’s aching for belonging, and second guessing the life of a spy, so steeped in lies.
That’s why she seeks out Bruce. Because he hates the fighting, he just wants to live in peace and solitude. In her restlessness, that idea sounds very attractive. No more lies, no more deception. She just wants something that’s REAL for once. Bruce is the exact opposite of anything she’s ever wanted or had in her life previously, and that is why she entertains the idea of running away with him. Because she is weary from the life she’s led.
But then Ultron comes, and Sokovia is under attack, and this is where Natasha is faced with a choice. Except for her, there is no choice to make. Bruce is ready to leave the fighting to the other Avengers and run away from it all. In his mind, he’s doing the right thing by staying away from the city but Nat knows better than that. That’s no excuse for her. “You’ve done more than your share,” He says, but that’s not enough for her. She could leave with him and never look back, but Natasha Romanoff has never run away from a fight, ESPECIALLY when there are people and her friends in need. In this moment, she knows exactly where her place is and it is up in the clouds with earth’s mightiest heroes. And so she chooses saving earth over Banner’s trust, and forces the Hulk to take up arms. She absolutely cannot abandon her friends. Her search for rediscovering herself ends here. She knows what she wants now and it is not the life Bruce longs for. This life as an Avenger is where she finds her purpose, she knows the world needs her. Just like she so confidently said for all to hear in court after SHIELD was destroyed and she brought her past into the light of day.
Now she’s standing in the air with one Steve Rogers, telling him there are worse ways to die than gazing down at the world you’re willing to sacrifice everything for. And you know what? He understands. Because Captain America can’t walk away when there’s people in need either. He understands that you’ve never “done enough” until everyone is safe and the war is over. He showed her what it means to be in it til the end of the line, and now she’s here right beside him, fighting to the bitter end. And when it’s over and the dust has cleared, she’s still by his side. No more do thoughts of running enter her mind (until she’s a fugitive on the run with Steve, to which she readily abandons all).
You see, Steve has become Natasha’s compass. He reminds her of her purpose and what she’s fighting for. He reminds where she belongs. If that’s what Natasha Romanoff was looking for in a home, then most assuredly she’s found it in him.
Steve goes on to say to Tony, as they’re exchanging goodbyes, that he’s not sure if settling down and raising a family is the life he wants anymore. He knows he’s making a difference as an Avenger, and the world needs him. Just like it needs Nat. So while she feels shame because she can’t have kids, Steve doesn’t need that farmhouse life. He’s content to be saving the world with her (and adopt super kids like Wanda Maximoff who need all the love and support two super parents can give!!! Romanogers and their magica daughter is my favorite thing in the entire MCU folks!!!)
Why is Age of Ultron and even Hulktasha important? Because it reveals to the characters and to the viewers that Steve and Natasha want the same things. They find their solace in the fight. Selflessly. At the end of it all, they’ll be leading the front lines. Whatever it takes.

Honestly I’m so tired of seeing the whole anti-romanogers argument that “they should stay platonic because they’re a great example of what a platonic male/female relationship should be” because that’s what Clint and Nat are for. And if this was the case, Nat never should have been sexualized in the first place and used as some sort of sub romantic interest for Banner. Out of all the people Nat should canonically be with, Steve makes the most sense. They have complete trust in one another and work like two cogs in a machine. They’ve stuck with eachother through thick and thin despite their own losses. Is it also not important to have examples of truly healthy romantic relationships on screen too?

Was Marvel foreshadowing a Romanogers wedding?
Ok so, probably everyone in the Marvel fandom knows that Mark Ruffalo is known for giving out spoilers. Yesterday came out an interview with Mark and Chris Evans and well, this is what happened:
Mark Ruffalo clearly says: “He gets married in this..” and he didn’t finish the sentence. It seems he stopped before saying even more. Was it really a spoiler?
Truth is, it makes sense.
You probably remember that scene in TWS when Nat says: “My fiancé was just helping me with some honeymoon destinations” and Steve looks at her and says: “Right, we’re getting married”
and then Civil War with this scene:
It could have been filmed in so many ways, but it was Nat walking down the aisle and Steve waiting for her at the altar. Just like a wedding.
Look, foreshadowing is very common in movies. Especially when it’s a franchise. This could certainly be foreshadowing.
The Russos even said that there’s a story arc from TWS that’s going to conclude in Endgame and the writers said there’s something big for Steve and Natasha in this movie.
These are the exact quotes:
Russo brothers: “The story that began in Winter Soldier and that ends in Avengers 4 is a, there’s a very personal arc there for us.”
Markus (one of the writers): “Those two have a… there’s a big… I just want someone to gesture to me and say ‘Shut up!’.”
I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen!
Also, to those who want him to stay with Peggy. Look, she moved on. She got married, had children. Steve isn’t selfish. He wouldn’t stay with her knowing the life she had and taking all of that away from her. It would be really out of character and he deserves to move on too. Also, staying in the past would ruin all the development Steve has. The Russos did a great job with his character, I don’t think they would ruin it by making him go to the past again. I’m sure they want this character to have a proper coclusion to his story and that would be Steve finally moving on from the past and having the life he always wanted.

Steve sighs as he finishes shaving his beard off. He cups the water in his hands and washes the rest of the shaving cream off. After drying off his face, he glances at the mirror.
How much of a different a shave could make a man. He went from looking older to younger now. His clean shaven face reminds him of the times when he wasn’t on the run or when half of the universe wasn’t wiped out. He closes his eyes and his hands clenches the sink.
“You okay?” He looks up and sees Natasha pressed against his back, her arms around his waist.
Is he okay?
He doesn’t feel okay… He feels like hell and wishes this were all just a terrible nightmare.
“I don’t know Nat.” He turns around to face her. “I don’t know what to feel.”
She reaches up and cups his freshly shaven cheek. “You were always a terrible liar Rogers, I know you’re hurting and I know you wish this was just a dream. I know I wish it was.”
Steve knows she’s hurting from the fact that Laura and the kids are gone. They were her family.
“I know you miss them,” he says gently.
“I’m just relieved that Clint is okay, still….”
“Tasha,” this time Steve cups her face, “you have me too. I’m not going anywhere, okay?”
“Okay,” she buries her face into his chest, her left hand clinging onto his dog tags around her neck. “I can’t afford to lose you too.”
“I know love,” Steve wraps his arms around her and holds her tight. “You won’t ever lose me, just promise me that I won’t lose you too.”
“I promise,” she murmurs against his chest.

Steve Rogers began as a person ready and more than willing to die for what he believes in, and throughout his every appearance he has maintained that status quo. However, if he willingly sacrifices himself in Endgame, even in the defense of his friends and the universe, it will mean that he hasn’t changed at all, which would be a rather unsatisfying ending for the character. That isn’t to say that he won’t die in the next movie, but that whether he does or not, he can’t want to do so – for his arc to be complete he needs to find something to live for. He needs to have a reason to want to stay alive.
