The heritage of Serena’s family, specifically the family of her mother’s side, is a long line of powerful trainers and Mega Evolution specialists/masters. Her earliest and most direct ancestor, Celie Aralie, is regarded as the ‘mother of Mega Evolution’, having been the first woman in Kalos to Mega Evolve a pokemon (and being the second person to do so overall), as well as being the one to come up with the idea for the Tower of Mastery. This lineage is associated with being able to bond quickly and deeply with their partner pokemon, an important caveat for Mega Evolution and being a respected trainer overall. They have a deep, innate understanding of pokemon and can connect with them faster than the average person.
The Aralie family hailed from wartorn Kalos, pulling themselves out of death and poverty and focusing on harnessing the power of their bonds with pokemon, which later funneled into Mega Evolution. Serena’s family has lived in Kalos for the past three-thousand years, and Celie’s own children would go on to become the figureheads of the Tower of Mastery following the death of their mother, and later on their father. They worked to preserve the legacy of Mega Evolution and the history, passing on the knowledge to those who proved themselves worthy, just as their parents did.
As time progressed, the Aralie family held strong positions in Kalos, with her ancestors holding some of the first positions in the Elite Four when an actual league was established, and others holding brief titles as Gym Leaders later on as well. Some of the Aralie family opt to work with pokemon in other ways, immersing themselves in the natural habitats to study and learn more about the pokemon that they walked alongside. Others opt to put themselves in more nurturing roles for pokemon, similar to rehabilitation.
The Aralie family, with all the strong trainers they had, still fell back to the Tower of Mastery to uphold it as Celie did. Some focused full-time on Mega Evolution, taking care to tend to the tower and all of its students, while the more battle-adept focused on upholding their positions in the region’s League.
About 500 years ago, part of the Aralie family name turned into the Bellegrade name, and aura prowess became a small staple of the family. On rare occasions, such power skipped a generation, but it was something that was passed on more often than not. The Bellegrades waned slightly as far as interest in Mega Evolution went. Some of them did take up learning the art and perfecting it, while others had entirely different interests like those of the arts, philosophy, and mythology, with many scholars coming from the Bellegrade line. Old philosophical texts and writings along with mythological research with the Bellegrade name on it exist, but are few and far between due to the age of such items.
Mega Evolution as a whole remained a huge interest in the other part of the lineage, with what remained of the Aralie name still tending to the tower and passing on the title of the tower’s master to their children, and so on, even to present day with Gurkinn and his granddaughter, Korrina.
The Bellegrade family name would shift once more into the Beaumont name 500 years after that upon the marriage of Grace’s parents. The Bellegrade name belonged to Grace’s grandmother, who kept her name upon marrying her husband. Grace’s grandmother was the only one in her family to treat her with decency and respect, and was the driving force for Grace to change her last name to Bellegrade when she was able to do so. Grace, while having the potential to be a strong trainer, went the route of a Rhyhorn Racer, while her sister became a top contest star overseas.
And then there was Serena, becoming the first person in her family’s history to become Champion, while further learning and becoming proficient at Mega Evolution on the side. She knows of her heritage as a Bellegrade, but anything regarding the Aralie family is unknown to her.
#so ancestors huh-#kalos food continuing to wake me tf up as usual. kalos fans doing more for this fandom than gamefreak each and every day. love yall

Yveltal does not rule over dark-types as a whole. They do respect him, but do not generally look towards him for orders unless a situation is dire enough to call for it. The only dark-type that he really has 'reign' over (through circumstance, not through his own force/doing), are Murkrow and Honchkrow. They reside in all regions, acting as his eyes and ears. They report to him when necessary, but for the most part, Yveltal lets them be. Calista, Serena’s Honchkrow, is second in command, having nearly the same authority and rule as Yveltal. She is there to send out orders in the rare event where Yveltal is unable to, if he’s hibernating, or if something happens to him. Essentially, she is his right hand, and her lineage dates back to the original Murkrow Yveltal fed when and took care of he was young. With the birds being incredibly intelligent, his care and kindness towards it spread like wildfire through the original murder, and his good deed, in turn, is what lead him to his prominent role today.
While he may not rule over dark-types as a whole, he is still the strongest dark-type in existence, and his strength is what causes those of his type to respect him.

Serena met Sinnoh's Champion, Dawn Hara, during her stay in Hoenn following a mix-up in one of Lilycove's resorts with their rooms. Dawn had traveled to the tropical region for diplomatic reasons, meeting with Hoenn's League officials, however due to her young age, Cynthia had made it a point to accompany her. Cynthia had booked them separate rooms, but a mishap occurred when Serena had booked her own room at around the same time.
The two teenagers had come face-to-face at the room, having been mistakenly double-booked in an oversight. It was almost a moment out of a sitcom, with the two girls not sure what to do as there were no other rooms available at the time. However, they would go on to recognize one another in part from their various contributions to their respective regions. In the end, Dawn offered that they share the room. They were able to get another futon (along with a full complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner on a day of their choosing as an apology for the mix-up).
Serena's stay at the resort was much shorter than Dawn's, with Dawn staying for a full week and a half, while Serena only had booked five nights. Even still, they became fast friends during their stay together. Serena had the opportunity to meet Cynthia over their meals, unable to stop gushing at the fact she was meeting one of her idols.
Her and Dawn's relationship quickly had a visible dynamic - Serena did a lot of the talking, while Dawn was mostly a listener, a passive observer. It was clear, however, they had a lot of similar passions, and held similar experiences in thwarting their regions' threats at the time.
Perhaps it was their quick and easy camaraderie, but Serena found herself confiding in Dawn about things she hadn't told many other people. She spoke of her adventure through Kalos, both the good and the bad. Her triumphs at the gyms, and her dealings with Flare that culminated to her losing her Lucatio, and nearly her own life. Serena even spoke about her bond with Yveltal, someone that Dawn was introduced to at a later point.
Dawn wasn't one to divulge her own personal details much, nor go into deep lengths on her life, though she did find herself returning the gesture. She spoke briefly about her time in the Distortion World, and how she had died during her battle with Giratina. They connected on their dreadful experience in their hospitals.
To Serena, it was liberating and freeing, in a way, to speak about her experiences and have someone be able to somewhat understand. The wounds were fresh, and she certainly shed a few tears recounting her tales, but her trip to Hoenn, and meeting Dawn, proved to be the catharsis she desperately had needed.
On Serena's final day at the resort, they both agreed to have a battle on Lilycove's large beach at sundown - after most of the tourists had left following the picturesque sunset.
Dawn didn't have access to Mega Evolution like Serena did, though the Champion was not bothered by this at all and insisted that Serena utilize it in their battle. From the moment Dawn sent out her first pokemon - her Empoleon - Serena could absolutely see and feel the sheer depth of their bond. It was unlike anything she'd ever seen thus far, feeling as if the duo's very souls were intertwined.
It was easily the most grueling and tough battle Serena had ever had. Dawn didn't hold back, nor did she pull any punches which Serena appreciated. In the end, despite Mega Evolving her Venusaur, even, Serena couldn't pull of a victory and lost to Dawn in a match that was much closer than Sinnoh's Champion would have thought. She had gotten down to one partly injured pokemon, and another one that was full health. If the tides had swung more in Serena's favor, Dawn would have suffered her first loss since her days traveling through Sinnoh.
They would part amiably, having exchanged numbers and promising one another to keep in touch - and that promise still holds to this day. Serena frequently contacts Dawn either through text, or by calling. They keep each other up to date on the various happenings in their lives, even meeting up in person should one another be visiting their respective region. Dawn has proved to be an incredibly valuable and trusted friend of Serena's, and credits their talks and time spent together as a large part of her healing journey.

what does love mean to you ?
everything
i know you because i am you. love is everything to you and you're trying so hard to find it in every part of your life; you've refused to let yourself be blinded by apathy and cynicism and in its own way, that's a form of love. you're trying to make everything love and i hope you never stop doing that, but sometimes we can't make everything into love - being treated unfairly, feeling unheard and unseen, having your words twisted - those things aren't love, please don't try to make them feel like they are. you have so much love inside you and learning to express that externally is hard, but i'm proud of you and i hope you take care of yourself. you create love wherever you go, i hope you give that love to yourself too.

What Crystal Are You?
pink opal
there is strength in softness and no one knows this better than you. no one knows cruelty it took for you to learn to be so vulnerable. your sensitivity is your armor. you refuse to let the world crush you. you refuse to stop seeing beauty in broken things. you will always look for the light in the darkness. people underestimate you. they think you are far too delicate. but they don't know your gentleness was forged from hardship. there are depths beneath your smiles no one will know. when was the last time you did let someone know, though? when was the last time you let yourself cry. when was the last time you didn't bury your anger? you're more than what you give to others.

Serena could only nod in understanding, and agreement. The cool air waft up from the sea was welcomed as always - something she sorely missed during her travels through Orre's arid deserts. Serena knew it would be best to appreciate Kalos' level climate while she had it, as she never could say for sure where she'd end up next. "You have to tell me about your travels later," she insists, curious about where Crys had found herself lately, "maybe when we're getting settled for the night!"
The sand leading up to the tower was soft and bright, the ocean hued in all shades of blue. Serena, once more, couldn't stop herself from marveling at the sights before her despite having seen them dozens of times. It never got old, truly, and she found herself very fortunate she was able to learn and train herself further in such a sacred place.
"Hold onto the feeling you get once we enter - trust me. It's something I wish I could go back and relive for the first time." The feeling she had when entering the Tower of Mastery for the first time was utterly indescribable. It felt like something her soul had been yearning for for years had been finally satiated. She was nothing less than thrilled for Crys to experience it as well, and Serena couldn't help but wonder if she would have a different takeaway than Serena had.
Crys' reply would soon pull Serena from her thoughts, the blonde eagerly listening to each and every word her fellow researcher said. It sounded similar to Serena's own experience, back then. Not exactly the same - such a thing was so unique, likely no two people would ever share the exact feelings - but eerily familiar. Pools of silver would melt slightly, a kind look to Serena's eyes that matched her smile.
"That's similar to how I felt as well." Serena replies, joining her hands behind her back for a moment as the pair edged closer to the tower. "I definitely understand what you mean. It's... such a unique feeling - it's hard to really describe what you feel, or for someone to understand unless they've been through it." She plays with her fingers for a moment, humming thoughtfully.
"For myself, it was... like my soul had been satiated. It had been yearning for something for all those years, and then walking along this path, and then entering the tower... Well, there's a reason why I say I wish I could relive it for the first time. It was indescribable - like it was where I was supposed to be, and that this was what I should be doing. On top of the other feelings, um... Like standing on top of a mountain peak, basking in the warm sun! Without the cold, of course." Serena laughs airily, her attention turning back to the other woman.
There's a mirthful smile on her face, reaching her eyes. "Oh gosh, here we were both worried about the same thing! I don't like to overstep - or feel like I'm overstepping - especially on such a personal experience like this... but that researcher's curiosity too! I just had to know, and I'm glad I asked. I guess in talking on my own experiences, I was able to relive those feelings again, in a way." Which was exactly what she wanted.
As the tower steadily grew larger on the horizon, Serena couldn't help but feel giddy. "I don't want to spoil the entire thing for you, but I will say that there is lodging available at the tower for those who come to train... if you did want to stay at the tower during your time here! I have some of my own things here already, so you wouldn't be left alone by any means."
Serena cleared her throat, feeling as if she'd already talked Crys' ear off - and they hadn't even reached the tower yet. "Either way, it won't be long now! How are you feeling?"
"Heat certainly isn't my thing either," though the calming cool of Shalour is very much up the researcher's alley. The two take to walking as their conversation continues, Crystal following both by ear and by foot down closer to the water's edge. "So, it's quite nice being in a region that's... temperate, compared to some of the other places I've been frequenting as of late." Between her exploits through Unova's Desert Resort as well as the Crown Tundra in the closer region of Galar, she's endured through some intense extremes recently, enough to last anyone a lifetime.
"I did consider—what with all of the closely-guarded information probably archived there—that it would be kind of futile to try looking into the Tower any deeper online... still, that didn't stop me from trying!" Bashful in tone, she turns towards the stretch of sea that upholds the distant sky, scanning her view once more to marvel at the monument they're heading towards. "I guess being spoiled of its mysticism would have numbed the surprise of it all, so I can't say I'm too disappointed to still be completely in the dark on what to expect once we arrive."
Still, these expectations are set fairly high. While their steps crunch over shells and wet sand, Crys recalls the two's lengthy phone conversations, following the women meeting during Kalos' Fashion Week. Though the events then—and those Serena has mentioned of her journey through Orre—were rather dizzying, intrigue for this moment hadn't waned even slightly. To learn more of mega-evolution will undoubtedly require Crys to look further within herself; but if there is anything she's needed more of recently, it's been to have the opportunity for some deeper introspection.
Serena's question doesn't hit the foreigner as intrusive, yet provokes much thought. And, despite coming across as vague, Crys still somehow relates to the exact feeling that is being described to her.
"Now that you mention it, I did feel a weightlessness overcome me, while passing over the water route to get here... it was a– I want to say, an almost floating sensation?" She's not sure she's making much sense, though carries on nonetheless—more context, hopefully enough to relay her point, as well as to make clear the emotions she's attempting to piece together for herself aloud.
"Almost as if my entire being was tapping into something I'd never before felt, like– I'm not sure I can quite put words to it, but it's as though this city's aura has shifted a feeling within me..."
Longingly, she enchants the idea that, perhaps, these new sensations bubbling up from her core are connected to those same powers tapped into to make mega-evolution possible. "Funny that you bring it up, as I wasn't sure whether or not to say anything—us researchers and our overactive imaginations, and all! I just hope I'm making some sense of myself."
#kristallum#i. am already running away with this and they arent even in the tower yet 💀#me out here like a broken record but i am so excited for thissss THE girlie awakening arc like?? 🥹 WHEW sry for the wait sis!!

Due to Serena and Yveltal being bonded/soullinked, Yveltal being put into the Ultimate Weapon was also a joint experience for Serena. Their connection is similar to that of other human-legendary bonds, though due to Serena's propensity to bond very fast and deeply with other pokemon, her bond with Yveltal is far deeper than that of others in the same position.
Yveltal's pain is Serena's pain, and vice versa. Their emotions can imprint on one another, they can communicate over vast distances, and they can tap into one another's mind spaces and project themselves there. Even as of late, they share in one another's memories in the form of dreams. A testament as to just how far and deep their bond has developed.
At the time of Flare, however, Serena didn't fully understand her connection to Yveltal. She had met him once as a child in Santalune Forest, a spot Serena was always drawn to as Yveltal often frequented it. It wasn't until Yveltal was captured and placed into the Ultimate Weapon that Serena began connecting the dots.
For the both of them, it was single-handedly the most painful, torturous, and agonizing experience they had ever had thus far - and Yveltal had been alive for thousands of eons up to that point. For Yveltal, it was far worse as he was the one actively in the weapon.
It felt like, piece by piece, parts of his soul were being ripped away. He couldn't think or comprehend anything that was happening around him, or happening to him - all there was was a searing, white hot pain. An agony so beyond his comprehension that, to this day, he doesn't know how to properly explain what he went through. No one but Serena can truly understand how it felt and what he went through.
There was an unrelenting cacophony of souls around him, those souls of both people and pokemon alike that had been used to power the weapon both in the past and in the present. He could hear and see them all, crying out in anguish, in anger, lamenting without stopping. Cursing and besmirching him, their souls unable to be collected and ferried to the afterlife. They lingered in the weapon, bound to it - a fate worse than death.
It all was like a nightmare that both of them couldn't wake up from. It was a genuine miracle Serena was able to function through the agony, moving entirely on autopilot and feeling as if she were submerged, in a far away place from everything that was happening. It was during this event that she managed to tap into Yveltal's mind space for the first time, in a desperate bid to try and rescue him - to no avail.
She would bear witness to it all. The howling souls and screams from the damned, the horrific agony, and a tortured being she could not reach. All of her nerves were alight with fire, where even a simple gust of wind felt like thousands of razor blades slicing into her. No matter how hard she tried to reach Yveltal, he only grew further and further. As hard she she ran, she was not fast enough to catch up to him. Serena would watch as he wept, tears of black pooling like ink around his feet. Any words exchanged were garbled, her throat became raw with how hard she had screamed, doing anything and everything in her power to try to reach him.
Yveltal was slipping further and further, and they both knew it. Serena only grew colder and colder, feeling the pinpricks of death rising up her spine. Everything was wrong. Despite it all, Serena knew she had no choice. She wept silently during her run through Flare's HQ, in part from the pain, and in part due to Yveltal's treatment. For a being that was so integral to Kalos' history, one that had been through constant mistreatment and ire, to now be tortured and used to evil gain was nothing short of infuriating to Serena. Through it all, in feeling both his agony and anguish, her one and only goal was to get Yveltal out. To free him from his shackles, an arbiter of his agony.
She hadn't even registered when her friends left her, dealing with countless Flare members all on her own. They had been the final obstacles in her freeing Yveltal, and she wasn't about to let them stop her.
After Yveltal was freed from the Ultimate Weapon, and everything was all said and done, the effects of the weapon is still lasting on the two of them. They both experience bouts of chronic pain, manifesting in various forms. It can either be a debilitating headache, full-body soreness, or pain in certain areas. Other times, they feel nothing but numb - a static that takes over akin to a limb falling asleep. This is accompanied by a deep coldness, to the point where their skin feels several degrees colder than normal. It is random when it happens, but is a chronic set of side-effects they have to deal with for the rest of their lives. Pain medication doesn't do much to alleviate any symptoms, as the symptoms are simply too strong for anything to actually be of help.
Serena hasn't really spoken to anyone about any of this besides Yveltal, naturally. Their situation is so unique and so specific to the point that no one would be able to really relate. All she's ever really told people is that she has flare-ups of chronic pain sometimes, but not the extend behind it or what has caused it - after all, would anyone believe her anyways?
