           ‘   oh god. jeremy? i think? i could definitely pick him out of a police line up, i’ll tell you that much. who was yours?   ’ eyebrows furrow, contemplating the fact that selina’s mark wasn’t much of a battle and before she can consider the ins and outs of what she’s about to say, ‘   i’ll be your mark.   ’ she says it with a shrug of a shoulder. ‘   could be fun, right? hell you could be my mark if you want. i feel pretty confident either way,   ’ a devilish smile grows to her lips as her mind considers what routes she would take around campus instead of the everyday pattern she’s fallen into over the years. ‘   what do you say? wanna play?   ’

“oh, i can almost put a face to it. mine was drew, so, not the easiest out there, but i managed, certainly.” she could amost see gears turning in ryan’s head and she smiled slowly at the suggestion, her own beginning to turn. “interesting. and what should the prize be?” she was always up for a good challenge, and ryan would certainly present one. “bragging rights or would you like to make it more interesting?”

“Yeah, I figured as much.” She takes another look at the yellow shirt, huffing lightly, because while she does agree with Selina, she does like the color. But she won’t risk it washing her out, especially with her pale skin. “That color fits you way better. I think I’ll go with the green.” She nods, taking another look. “It’s a nice jade green, too. I struggle so much with colors. I know what works for me, but sometimes colors that are a hit or miss have me struggling.”

“sorry.” she was sympathetic — pastels often made her look off in the wrong tone, so she could appreciate the struggle. “yellow is pretty safe on me, but i do think the green will suit you better. that shade will bring out your eyes in a beautiful way.” selina offered a bright smile. “i don’t blame you at all. the screen can also be super deceiving, too, so how are you meant to know, right?”

      @selkaleli    //    “  𝚍𝚘  𝚢𝚘𝚞  𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛  find  the  grounds  to  be  too  STIFLING  ?  ”  larissa  macedo  can  be  a  restless  person  .  she  can  understand  why  the  school  is  a  closed  campus  .  and  despite  how  spacious  the  grounds  are  ,  she  wasn’t  expecting  part  of  her  to  feel  so  trapped  .

“oh my god, absolutely.” her will to stay for her education was constantly challenged, by her desire to travel instead. the balance hardly existed there. the grounds were beautiful, but not nearly enough to keep it at bay. “is it just the being stuck here at the moment?”

they way selina speaks makes him think they could manage it, but his confidence will deplete once he fails his mission. so he can have this moment. “ and this is why you’re my favourite kaleli – don’t tell aylin i said that. ” he’d deny it, anyway. “ don’t worry, we all have our flaws. i’ll send you some links later. ” hand on his hips, desperate eyes dart all over the place trying to find a person wearing sunglasses by the starbucks, rushing to move in line with where selina’s sitting in hopes he’d be able to get a better angle, but when she admits the truth, all tension is released from his muscles, hands dropping to his side. “ are you serious? why would you do that?! ” he groans, slumping back into the bench next to her, head in hands. “ oh man, i thought i was so close. you’re really good at this! ” the way he goes from gutted to amazed in a second is shocking. “ so, it’s really not you? you’re not gonna follow me to the national mall or anything? ”

“oh, i thought that much was obvious. age before beauty and all that.” easygoing despite the stress she had just caused him, clearly enjoying her joke, she shakes her head, chuckling at his despair. “i mean, the look on your face was worth it. you’ve really got to work on your expressions, though, i caught on much too easily to you thinking it was me.” she shook her head in confirmation, gesturing to the direction her own target went in. “my student went off that way about ten minutes ago. giving myself a bit of a challenge, but i think you’re safe for now. i haven’t seen much of anyone else.”

“I need your opinion on something. I want to buy this shirt, but I’m indecisive about the color,” she begins, showing Selina the shirt on her phone. “There’s a bunch of colors, but I’m stuck on red, green and yellow. What do you think? I can’t tell if this yellow will look good with my skin tone and hair color.”

she leaned over to look at the phone, swiping through the different options and fixing noah with a critical eye. “yellow on someone with your coloring can be so hit or miss, i’m nervous it’d wash you out. i think green would be safest, with the contrast,” she hummed, staring at the screen more intently. “but if you think it’s more of a warm red, i think you could pull that off too. right?”

with a cheeky smile, al picked up the stand and turned his heel. “come on, we’re supposed to be at the picnic soon.” everyone was far too busy with their own friends to notice, and al was looking confident carrying the cheese cake as he made his way out of the function. as soon as they were far enough and the coast clear, he let out a deep breath he didn’t even know he had been holding in. “oh shit, that actually worked? you owe me ten bucks.” 

as quickly as it had fallen open, she snapped her mouth shut and followed, putting the most confidence into her step that she could manage. she was so sure someone, jas, another student, would ask what they were doing, but with no one in sight, they were basically in the clear. “for fuck’s sake.” the ten dollar bill was handed over with nothing more than a headshake, frowning at his good luck. “think we can get sam to eat the entire thing?”

“No, I tend to get too caught up with my classes and the events always either take place at the beginning of the semester or close to finals and that stresses me out too much to want to attend.” He feels like he’s oversharing but it’s also something that he is pretty genuinely known for so it doesn’t feel too awkward telling her. For a moment he considers what he could have gotten her that would have made a stranger gift but he’s glad he went with flowers, there’s nothing else he can think of getting for a date. “I’m sure if they don’t exist then they can certainly be invented.” Owen makes a mental note to ask Jas about that later. “What’s your favorite breakfast food? Or, I guess, do you even eat breakfast or are you one of those people that prefers to skip it altogether?” 

she nods in understanding. “they really do like to hold the events close to the ends, right? seems a bit weird not to give us a break in the middle, but i suppose that’s how the more major holidays line up. having a part for april fool’s day seems worse, somehow.” she didn’t really experience that same level of stress towards the start of a new semester, but the stress of finals and even the midterm did give her pause, so she could appreciate it. “good point. it probably all is in the batter, anyways.” selina purses her lips in thought, trying to narrow down what her favorite would be. “i love breakfast foods, but not usually in the morning. maybe eggs and sausage, if i had to choose. are you more sweet or savory with breakfast?”

         ah, selina remembers. ‘   yes, i did. i wish i was exploring because i had to find my mark, though. it was too easy and i was looking forward to the challenge. — how was it for you?   ’

she thinks back to the weird conversation she witnessed in the alley, still not fully sure how to unpack all of that. “about the same, you know?” she offered instead, with a quick smile. “maybe a bit more than i had expected, but still too easy. who was your mark again?”

– “I COULD BE A GREAT GOVERNESS NUN. except for the dresses out of curtains bit, i’d need captain von trapp to lend me his mastercard gold, please, ” surely he had one with the size of the mansion. they had a butler ! “ nooo, it’s a brunch this year so very casual, mimosas and party music, very lowkey. it’ll be fun and we’re hoping for a good turnout. you know, because of the murder last year and all. ” 

“see, and this is so why it just wouldn’t work, though — skip the working part, just find someone you can pretty woman instead. then you get the mastercard and a penthouse.” plus, richard gere instead of christopher plummer was a win in her book. “okay, i guess if there’s mimosas, it won’t be all bad then. although i do feel like that is a valid excuse to dip this year, you know.”

“ exactly! you get me. but not too wild, our future bosses are probably watching somehow. ” which won’t end up stopping him, but he’s trying to get the right attitude. “ if you know, you know. if you don’t, you don’t. i’m sorry, dems the rules, you know? ” i’m actually sorry because i have no idea why i wrote that in the first place, so you get this annoying answer. maybe he doesn’t know it’s a podcast. when selina appears to be making room on her phone, he’s genuinely really impressed with himself for a split second. he can’t believe that worked! but then his bubble is burst. “ what? who? where? ” head spins around trying to spot someone nearby. “ i’m totally being tailed! i thought it was you! i was trying to see if you’d been taking photos of me! ” 

“not if we throw them off first.” not the best of ideas, but certainly a fun one — they both could manage if they really needed to. that was the whole point of the ‘assimilation’ in their shared major, probably. “fair enough. i’m a little lost, but. fair enough.” his alarm was well worth the joke itself and she snorted, locking her phone and tucking it back into her pocket as she twisted to look for the person, who didn’t actually exist as far as she was aware. “i think they were over by the starbucks in sunglasses.” feigning shock briefly at the idea that he thought she was his tail, she snorted, finally shaking her head. “i’m just messing with you. i don’t know who it is, but if it was me, you wouldn’t have found me to begin with.” she paused, thoughtful. “maybe try avoiding the national mall, though? that’d be my first spot to check.”

Grimacing, she shook her head, “No no, white when it’s clearly casual borders on washed up retiree at a beach resort.” Like a linen dress was really her style, “But white does pop.” Popped and asked for something to be spilled on her. “That’s what I was going for. Most people are going to go with something flowy, romantic. I want my choice to be at the other end of the spectrum.” Sexy. “What are you planning on wearing?”

“ugh, classes are killing me ! ” selina dropped hersel next to ria, much too dramatic for the situation, but that was her m.o. “how’d your valentine’s turn out? remind me, did you have a date?”

         ‘  thank  god  i’m  not  alone  in  this  .  ’   and  she’s  kind  of  scared  to  bring  it  up  when  it  comes  to  the  ppc  -  she  understands  the  work  ,   but  …  still  ,   it  doesn’t  feel  fully  right  to  her  .    ‘  not  to  be  a  pessimist  ,   but  something  tells  me  they  won’t  .  ’  

“i’m sure more folks feel that way than you’d think, too. probably scared to say so?” she suggests, raising her eyebrows. the school really wasn’t able to do much else, but it did still weird. “i’d call that realism, actually. but we can hope, right?”

“Yeah, I guess she was just trying to surprise me. She’s always trying to get me to attend social events like these.” Owen obviously wasn’t upset with Aylin, he didn’t think there was anything she could ever do that would make him be upset with her. “It’s not your fault and, besides, I really don’t mind.” It got him out of his room and was a descent enough distraction. “I don’t know, I didn’t know if it’d make you uncomfortable that I brought them since we both hadn’t planned on being here.” He offers her a sheepish grin but he’s grateful that she not only wants the flowers but seems to like them. “I was taught to never turn down free food so, I’m all for that.” Plus he doesn’t want to leave her alone without a date. “Not so sure how I feel about pretzels as part of a breakfast, though.” 

“you don’t usually?” she couldn’t blame him — she herself usually went, but not for very long and more so because she was worried about missing out on anything major happening. “alright, if you say so.” he did seem to be very okay with the entire ordeal, much more so than she was, but she didn’t really like surprises to begin with. she nodded slowly, understanding why he would be nervous about that. “thoughtful, but no — maybe if you had been weird about it, but they are just flowers.” her face betrayed her aversion to the idea of pretzels that early, even if it was really just another form of bread. “pretzels? really?” she began to move towards the food, haven’t had a chance to really get a good look at much of it. “couldn’t they just do savory waffles instead? i feel like those must exist.”

“they’re gonna know. ” al didn’t bother to look around. “how much do you want to bet that…” he placed a finger at the very edge of a ceramic stand with a perfectly coated strawberry cheesecake and turned it slightly, “i can walk out of here with this and no one would bat an eye?”

she widened her eyes at them, stifling a full laugh as she took a step back, picking up a normal pastry to add to the plate she held. “ten dollars. no way someone doesn’t notice, at least.”

“ okay, okay. when we both pass, let’s celebrate in a cute little cafe! except less cute and little but more fun and big, and not a cafe but maybe a bar? ” he suggests, though if his intuition is right, only one of them would be passing, and he’s really hoping it’s not going to be him. “ you’ve never heard of the undertaker? ” he jumps up from the bench, showing her one of his famous finishing moves, mimicking the commentators and cheers from the audience. until she spins it back on him, which he didn’t expect and it shows. “ uh … my phone sucks. i have an android. it’s broken, actually. let’s just use yours!  ”

“ooh, now that’s a thought. get to explore the actual nightlife of the city while we’re here.” coffee could always wait until sunday, after all. she watched as he mimed something she could only assume was sports related with a mix of amusement and confusion. “so he’s an athlete then? what’s that got to do with podcasts?” his clear surprise and hurried excuses confirm her suspicions, but she tries not to let the delight show as she nodded slowly. she made more of a show of facing it away from him for a moment, as if she were deleting pictures, before finally turning back with the camera fully open, turning it to the poor passerby. “by the way, i think someone’s been taking pictures of you,” she leaned over conspiratorially, her eyes widened, “you’re not being tailed, are you?”

           ‘   selina!   ’ ryan exclaims even though she’s not really the exclamatory type. when ryan first spotted the banged - brunette, she was simply trying to pair a name to the face. when it eventually came to mind it also came out of her mouth. a bit of an a-ha! moment. whoops. ‘   did you end up getting around d.c. okay?’

she turned, her face lit in recognition her from their brief conversation in the city. she nodded slowly. “only got lost twice, i believe — isn’t that a success?” she asked, smiling warmly at the other girl. “how about you? did you have time to explore?”

– “YEAH, TOTALLY,” AYLIN LIES, because she can’t find the answer in there at all. though she likes talking to selina because selina never outwardly tells her what to do, she makes a really good sounding board for aylin to complain to. “ become governesses ? i don’t know, sel, don’t ask me to understand christianity, ” she says with a dramatic sigh, though she still does not know how to solve a problem like maria either. “ maybe. you’ll just have to show up in order to find out, ” aylin arches her eyebrows back and forth suggestively. she can’t tell selina her plans or selina would definitely stop her ! 

she nodded, satisfied enough with aylin’s answer — she could figure it out from that, right? it wasn’t like selina could make a choice for her. she sighed, not without some exasperation. “my point was that you probably couldn’t be a governess nun anyways.” she shook her head slowly, with a not fully sincere smile. it was difficult not to be slightly suspicious when aylin made faces like that. “it’s nothing major, is it? i think mellow’s probably the move here.”
