Friday Job Roundup
Looking to get your journalism start on the beach? In the mountains? At CNN? There’s something for everybody this week.
Food and Agriculture Reporter, St. Louis Public Media, St. Louis, Mo.: This reporter will work with the Harvest Public Media collaborative to produce stories about what we eat and where it comes from. You’ll need a couple of years of broadcast (ideally radio) journalism experience to be competitive here.
Education Reporter, The Daytona Beach News-Journal, Daytona Beach, Fla.: DAYYYTOONNNNA! Education is a high-impact beat with a lot of opportunities to set yourself apart and provide coverage that is meaningful to a community. Plus, there’s a beach. I heard they also have car races there, if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
Graphics Operator, CNN, Atlanta, Ga.: You could be the person that makes the chyrons happen. “Average to above average spelling ability” is a must; it would be nice if you also spoke Spanish (you’re probably going to need to show some meaningful previous experience with video graphics as well).
Reporter, Shelby Star, Shelby, N.C.: Shelby is a cool town (if you’re ever there, go visit my buddy Chad at Lily Bean). This is a catch-all job, writing about both sports and news.
Sports Reporter, Clarion Ledger, Jackson, Miss.: The Clarion Ledger is a strong local newspaper with a great history of quality journalism. According to the ad, their sports reporters have gone on to careers at The Chicago Tribune, ESPN, the Associated Press and elsewhere. The person they hire for this job will focus mainly on preps, with some occasional college assignments.

Saturday (not Friday) Job Roundup
Want to write about sea level rise? Want to express your inner Scruffiness? You’re in luck, because news organizations are looking for reporters to cover these interesting beats (and more) right now! They’re a day late, but worth the wait:
Urban Life Beat Reporter, Knoxville News-Sentinel, Knoxville, Tenn. The urban life beat reporter will cover cool, young, hip city things that I’m too old and too country to understand. But it looks like a lot of fun, and you get to (in fact, you are encouraged to) develop a “Scruffy Knoxville” persona (there’s a story about that in the ad). Plus, you get to live and work in Knoxville, which is a pretty neat place.
Sea Rise Beat Reporter, The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Va. Pilot Media’s posting for this job calls sea level rise “the story of a lifetime,” and the company is looking for someone to tell it in creative ways. They also emphasize the desire for an “experimental spirit.”
Reporter, Bizwoman, Charlotte, N.C. Bizwoman, a component of the Charlotte Business Journal, seeks a reporter with “strong news judgment and social media know-how” to cover food and retail.
Digital News Producer, San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio, Texas. The right candidate for this job will be comfortable filing text, shooting videos, and curating content. The job ad says they want one year of experience, but to me this feels like a great first job for an accomplished college journalist.
Reporter, Port St. Joe Star/Apalachicola Times, Florida Gulf Coast. This reporter will split her/his time between two communities on the coast, near PCB. They’re particularly interested in someone who has the skills (or at least the interest) to produce podcasts. The Star and the Times are sister papers to The News Herald in Panama City, so there seems to be plenty of room to move up in the company.

Friday Job Roundup
Welcome to the first edition of the Friday Job Roundup. Normally, I’ll post four or five opportunities that look interesting to me. But for this inaugural post, I’ll share a whopping seven job posts. Many of them are newspaper jobs; it won’t always be this heavily weighted toward that segment of the journalism industry.
Multimedia Reporter, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Little Rock, Ark.: The daily paper of record in Arkansas is looking for a strong writer who also has social media and database skills. One year of journalism experience is required, so this looks like a great second job for an early-career journalist
Magazine Photographer, Hoffman Media, Birmingham, Ala.: This post has been up for a while, so if you’re interested you might want to move fast. Hoffman produces several magazines, including Cooking with Paula Deen, Taste of the South, and The Cottage Journal. Based on the language of the ad, it looks like their new photographer will contribute to several of those publications, shooting everything from food to interior design.
News Photojournalist, KABB-TV, San Antonio, Texas: KABB is a Sinclair-owned television station. They are looking for a general assignment videographer with one to two years of shooting and editing experience.
Reporter, The Commercial Dispatch, Columbus, Miss.: The Commercial Dispatch won the 2015 Daniel E. Phillips Freedom of Information Award for investigative reporting. Last year, it was one of 10 newsrooms in the U.S. selected to receive specialized training from Investigative Reporters & Editor. The person they hire will cover city and county government. They want two years of experience, but if you have really strong student media experience and an interest in investigative journalism, I’d tell you to give it a shot.
Investigative Reporter, Southern Poverty Law Center, Montgomery, Ala.: SPLC wants someone with three or more years of investigative journalism experience to cover civil rights and social justice issues. The job ad says you’ll be writing long and short pieces for both print and digital platforms.
Reporter, Daily Commercial, Leesburg, Fla.: This Smith Communication-owned newspaper is hiring a reporter to cover schools and county government. Leesburg is just northeast of Orlando (a scant 43 miles from Disney World and 56 miles from the breach). According to the job ad, the ideal candidate “will be committed to strong civic journalism, deciphering complex issues and writing strong narratives.”
Reporter, The Bryan-College Station Eagle, College Station, Texas: The Eagle is hiring two general assignment reporters. College Station is the home of Texas A&M University. They would prefer someone with a year of experience, but again, this feels like a job that a graduating college senior with strong college media experience could compete for.
