my father just found out about the murderbot casting and sent me like a dozen angry texts about it back to back, and his take is that for thematic reasons murderbot needs to not be a white man because it is constantly misjudged based on its appearance and assumed to have no real inner life or personhood, which is (1) very insightful, (2) not actually a take i have seen elsewhere in The Discourse so far (though i have not gone out of my way to look for The Discourse tbf), and (3) not remotely what i expected a not-very-online 60something cishet white guy not ordinarily given to literary analysis to say about it??? really caught me off-guard and now i'm also annoyed i didn't think of it. like, i, the litcrit queer am over here going "idk i just think it's the least interesting choice you could make" and he's thinking about the subtextual resonances and/or ways of communicating the marginalized status of a secunit to the audience on a visceral level. goddammit.

finished system collapse and read home + compulsory after, i am so glad i found this series u guys and am currently bouncing between the high of being able to check out fandom content freely without fear of spoilers vs the ache of being caught up on new canon content with no options except to reread

all in all tho found a whole new set of characters to love and write about, god bless martha wells for creating it and god bless octavia butler for kickstarting my scifi obsession this year bc previously i used to think the genre just wasn’t for me and now it rlly feels like everything i’ve been searching for

I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this but I just got hit by a huge parallel in Network Effect

Early on, ART tells Murderbot, regarding Amena, "tell her you care for her. Human juveniles need to hear that from their caregivers" (paraphrasing here, i don't have the text in front of me)

Later, Ratthi insists that they show Murderbot the video surrounding its retrieval. Murderbot is absolutely astounded by all the effort gone into getting it back

Clearly juvenile humans aren't the only ones who need it spelled out

I think what amuses me about Tarik of the Murderbot diaries is that in any other series he'd be the main character - competent, ass-kicking, with his violent-tragic-traumatic backstory, the fish-out-of-water alienation of now being a refugee in a foreign culture, and messy relationship drama.

...But in the Murderbot books it's just like "whatever, we've all been brutalized by capitalism, ur not special" 🤷 lol.

Tarik's not a main character. He's barely a minor character. He exists, he is having sex with one of Murderbot's friends, and Murderbot only knows this against its will. 🤣
