something that i've grown to hate about the omori fandom that i never was able to put into words until now was that there is absolutely NO sympathy for mari.
let me explain.
whenever i talk to basil defenders, they always tell me that basil came up with the idea to stage the suicide to protect sunny from the consequences of murdering mari.
people always talk about how poor sunny and basil have to deal with the guilt for what they did for all this time.
but what about mari??
maybe sunny deserves consequences.
no matter how you slice it, he murdered a little girl. a little girl's life ended at FOURTEEN years old. it ended before it even began, and it was sunny's fault. and then, basil took it a step further and disrespected her dead body in order to rid sunny of the consequences that he DESERVED because he MURDERED a CHILD.
mari was a child. she was not just sunny's older sister or hero's boyfriend. she had dreams and aspirations and she wanted to grow up and know what it was like to be an adult. she wanted to get better at piano and graduate high school and live life exactly how she wanted.
and she never got that chance. because sunny murdered her.
i'm not saying that sunny is a heartless monster. i know he killed her on accident.
but i hate how the fandom tries so hard to justify the actions they took of hiding the murder. because god forbid poor baby sunny faces consequences for literal child murder. he ended a life. mari is dead because of him. and nobody in this fandom cares because nobody in this fandom actually cares about mari, they just use her as a prop to add angst to the lives of the male characters. and i am over it.

Hey everyone! My brother and I are working on a video critiquing OMORI. We need help gather evidence for various arguments in favor of OMORI and checking annotations. Along with that, we'd like to hear some of your opinions on things such as what you thought happened the first time you saw the truth album. To facilitate this, we've set up a Discord server with various topics of discussion for you to participate in. Topics up for discussion include but are not limited to:
Is Kel traumatized?
Do Sunny's parents know he killed Mari?
Is the friendship between the main characters as strong as the game says it is?
Is Mari ever a ghost?
We'd love to hear your thoughts!

I've seen some people point this out before so I won't be treading any new ground here but honestly, the twist that Mari didn't kill herself is also shitty writing because it strips her of that tiny sliver of interiority she could've had had she actually killed herself.
Take, for example, the photo album. As a narrative device meant to showcase the strength of the group's friendship, it sucks - most of the photos are just shallow fluff that tells us next to nothing about the characters featured on the photos. Given Mari's prominence in said photos, however, the shallow fluff could've somewhat worked to the game's advantage, because then the player would be forced to reconcile her cheeriness with the fact she killed herself. What kind of issues did she suffer from that she decided suicide is the way out? Just for how long was she hiding those issues to the point she could hide them so impeccably? Did she hesitate or was she at peace with her decision?
And then you get to the twist and those are no longer questions. She died by Sunny's hand! So she really was too good for this sinful earth <3
And it feels like such a cop-out. I gotta hand it to Omocat and co. - it takes a special kind of talent to fumble a good premise for a story this spectacularly.
#it really is disappointing how little character she is given#she has to be the perfect victim#she has to be fridged so poor little sunny and basil can be sad#reblog

feeling salty today, so.
"the fact he didn't know she was poor"
Backstage's Aubrey does seem to imply the real Aubrey opened up to Sunny more than she did to the rest of her friends, though. I think we can reasonably infer she also opened up about her rough home life to him as part of that.
"Sunny's pretty observant, I think."
Sunny, being the awesome and observant friend he is, apparently did nothing of substance to help.
The game doesn't show him even trying to help. We don't get to see him... idk, maybe bringing Aubrey some decent food since the fridge in her house apparently contains mold. Despite Basil also describing Sunny as "a good listener", we don't get to see any flashbacks that'd have shown him listening to and supporting Aubrey.
The way OMORI's narrative seems to present it, Sunny being a "good listener" basically amounted to him being an equivalent of the rubber duck programmers explain their code to in their attempts to debug it. We get repeatedly told that he's supportive, but nothing of the sort is ever shown, which brings me to my next point
"Wonder if Sunny's subconsciously fulfilled her wants in Headspace to make up for seeing them never filled in the real world."
Even though I recognize that this statement is a fairly neutral one, I want to use it to address something else. I've seen people insisting that Sunny loves his friends and - somehow - using Headspace as evidence.
This sort of argument seems to stem from a particular problem with the game's writing - it often forgets that Sunny's imagination has no impact on reality. The secret post-credits cutscene is emblematic of this since you only obtain it by consistently watering Basil's plants in Headspace, which the game seems to equate to Sunny doing a nice thing for Basil in reality for some reason.
That brings me to my overall point - Sunny giving Aubrey everything she wishes for in Headspace doesn't matter at all. Sunny creating an ideal world for himself and his friends in his head is not indicative of his strong love for them.
Nothing Sunny does in his head matters.
What defines you are your actions, not your thoughts. The game can tell me Sunny loves his friends all it wants, but Sunny's actions (lying to his friends by omission, ruining Basil's photo album, leaving Basil himself alone during the latter's breakdown in the bathroom) simply don't match.
#“nothing sunny does in his head matters” EXACTLY#all of it is a fabrication. it doesnt truly say anything except his perceptions and wants#nor does it reflect on how well he supported his friends#we get told a lot in this game. we dont get shown a lot#analysis#reblog
