The Impact and Effect of Online Learning To Students and Parents (Entry no. 5) November 12, 2021 By: Sebastian Dungka
Mabuhay! Once again, this is Sebastian Dungka, a 7th grade student of Manila Science High School. In my last blog, I would like to discuss the impact and effect of online learning to all students and parents.
Because of the COVID-19 outbreak that started to spread all over the world at the first quarter of 2020, countries from all over the world implemented lockdowns which resulted to schools being temporary closed and was forced to continue the school year through distance learning and open educational applications.
According to UNICEF, more than 1.57 billion students in over 190 countries have been affected by school closures due to COVID-19. After 2 years, some developed countries have reopened schools for their face-to-face classes while still observing safety protocols. Unfortunately, some countries are still forced to continue the school year using the remote mode of learning, and one of them is the Philippines.
Aside from the Philippines, there are only few countries left practicing the online learning, such as Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, and Cambodia. They aim to continue the school year by setting up online lectures, printing and distributing chapters of textbooks and broadcasting video lessons through television, radio, websites, and social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube. Tough job for teachers indeed!
Online learning is indeed a struggle for some students who are not very familiar about technology. Technology aims to provides students with easy-to-access information, accelerated learning, and fun opportunities to practice what we learn.  This will turn into opposite if you do not know how to use the computer technology in the first place. The burden for the students increases if they need to study both the computer technology and their topics during online learning. So how do we motivate ourselves? Always remember, discovering new things means expanding your knowledge!
It has been observed that online learning can affect the mental health of the students. Sad to say, some even suffered unstable mind and mood swings because they lack interaction with their friends and classmates for a very long time. They also have experienced an increase in stress, anxiety, and depression that resulted to a poor school performance.
Students of certain families really got affected when they experienced financial problems. It is difficult to study if your family can’t afford your basic needs such as tuition fees and school supplies. Though Filipinos are well-known for being resilient and always has the bayanihan spirit, these problems are often being solved with the help of the people around us.
Another challenge here are the parents’ vital role in online learning. Parents tend to act as teachers when their children can’t understand the lessons. Problem arise if the parents themselves don’t have enough knowledge and skills to supervise their kids. What they can only do then is to motivate their children. We salute you, dear parents! But always remember to let your kids do the work as they’re the one enrolled in school.
To my fellow students I know you had difficulty concentrating with the lessons every time you encounter noisy environments, internet issues, time mismanagement, and staying motivated.  For me, the best ways to solve these distractions is to remain focus despite of their presence. If you think the surrounding will be a source of distraction anytime, look for a conducive place where you can study peacefully. Another solution is managing your time wisely because it will help you to get things done more efficiently! And the last one is to seek your family and friends support. Make time to talk to them so you can release the stress. It is very important that we take care of our mental health nowadays.
To all my fellow students out there, before you complain, please bear in mind how blessed you are to be enrolled right now. Not all of our age were given a chance to have an education during this pandemic. Let’s look at the module as an opportunity to learn. Treat it like  a new level of your favorite online game that you’d like to finish in one sitting. Enjoy the knowledge and practice the wisdom you gain from it. If you do your best today, you are not just giving yourself a chance but also you are giving your parents the gift of hope and love. Let’s make them proud by repaying them with hard work! So online learning pa more and online games later as a reward, okay!
Thank you for your time and always stay safe!

The Faces of Online Learning (Entry no. 4) November 3, 2021 By: Sebastian Dungka
Hola amigos! Once again, this is Sebastian Dungka, a 7th grade student of Manila Science High School. In this blog, I would like to share with you my experiences about the online learning conflicts that students now are battling around the world.

I have observed that issues students face from around the world are not quite different from ours. To my fellow students I know you had difficulty concentrating with the lessons everytime you encounter noisy environments, internet issues, time mismanagement, and staying motivated.  For me, the best ways to solve these distractions is to remain focus despite of their presence. Online Class: After One Month (Entry no. 2) October 20, 2021 By: Sebastian Dungka
Hi guys! Once again, this is Sebastian Dungka, updating you on my fun and learning experiences in Manila Science High School. In this blog, It’s been one month and time really flies!
Up to now, the Philippines is one of the remaining five countries in the world that’s still using the online mode of learning as its education system in this pandemic period. Sad to say, my fellow students, we still need to deal with the requirements of good Internet connection, stay tuned with our laptops and cellphones. Most of all we still  need to find the most peaceful spot of our home. Again try your best not to complain but instead, let us give our very best to repay our parents’ hard work.
For the past weeks, staying up late until 11PM-12AM became my unhealthy habit because of the urgent worksheets and activities I have to finish on time and to review for my incoming tests. As much as possible, I try finishing these at the soonest possible time to enjoy longer hours of sleep. How I wish to have enough rest to get ready for the next day, like a newly-charged battery of my cellphone.
I can say that our batch was the most affected by this pandemic. Last school year we were not able to see our classmates physically even at least once. We parted ways last graduation without bidding goodbyes. We didn't experience the usual graduation ceremony, which could be the climax of our elementary days. But again, I'm not complaining because the most important thing is that we're all safe.
I was also lucky to represent our class in the Infographics Making Contest during the Science Week. The topic is about the importance of Science and Technology in nation building, so I decided to focus on the water supply in every household. It's because I want to understand how safe it is for human consumption. I learned a lot technically, and an addition to it is my first time to take a time-lapsed video while creating and designing it. The results were announced last October 8 through Facebook Live. I may not received any place in the winners list but having the experience of joining this contest is already an achievement for me. This is actually my first time to join an online contest at school, and I’m happy because of the support as I completed my work.
Going back to the synchronous classes, the weak Internet connection is really a big struggle for me. We are still trying to upgrade our Internet router by adding a booster but the company hasn’t delivered it yet despite of our continuous follow-ups. Hopefully it’ll be right on my face in the coming days!
In terms of online schooling, this year is Level 10! Or maybe because my elementary days was moderate. Again, I'm not complaining. I'm looking forward to gain more knowledge and experience. I know this school year would be difficult, since I'm part of an institution who is more advanced in learning. I'm hoping that again, I'd be able to cope up and survive this second pandemic school year through all these "firsts" of my secondary year. Thank you for your time! Always stay safe guys. Until next time!

Blog Entry No. 1 By: Sebastian Dungka
Greetings! I am Sebastian Dungka, a freshman of Manila Science High School. I would like to share with you, my experiences in online learning for the past two years.
Today's mode of learning is difficult because of various requirements such as good Internet connection, devices like laptops, cellphones and headphones, a good and peaceful working place with strong signal strength, and the like. Many students in the country right now can't afford such requirements, to the extent that some of them just drop-out of school because of poverty. So if you are one of the students who are still enrolled, and struggling because of difficult lessons and numerous tasks, do not complain because you are still lucky to have this opportunity to learn.
I can say that our batch was the most affected by this pandemic. Last schoolyear we were not able to see our classmates physically even at least once. We parted ways last graduation without bidding goodbyes. We didn't experience the usual graduation ceremony, which could be the climax of our elementary days. But again, I'm not complaining because the most important thing is that we're all safe.
Moving forward, I'm now in Grade 7 in a new school with new classmates. New faces that I am excited to meet personally. This schoolyear, I have many "firsts". You could just imagine how you only see your classmates upto their shoulders. That you can be familiar with them by their physical appearance and the tone of their voices. I feel like this is a good way to enhance my senses. I will never forget how everybody can easily identify me just through my deep voice. It seems I'm the most ahead on our race to adolescence. In a span of 3 weeks, I have experienced a lot of worksheets, exams and activities, that keeps me awake until 11PM, 7 days a week. By the way, the results will be out on October 8th and I'm hoping that the judges will appreciate my work.
Going back to the synchronous classes, I'm struggling sometimes on my Internet connection. So this is already beyond my power and I'm just praying that the net connection in the whole country will improve soon. In this cases, a hotspot saves the day!
In terms of online schooling, this year is Level 10! Or maybe because my elementary days was moderate. Again, I'm not complaining. I'm looking forward to gain more knowledge and experience. I know this school year would be difficult , since I'm part of an institution who is more advanced in learning. I'm hoping that again, I'd be able to cope up and survive this second pandemic school year through all these "firsts" of my secondary year.
Thank you for your time! Always stay safe guys. Until next time!

Online Class: Off Camera (Entry no. 3) October 27, 2021 By: Sebastian Dungka
Hi guys! Once again, this is Sebastian Dungka, updating you on my fun and learning experiences in Manila Science High School. In this blog, I would like to discuss the experiences of my classmates in online learning.
I have observed that my classmates are still having a hard time coping up with our online classes. Maybe because they are still adjusting as they preferred face-to-face classes more than the online lectures. This is so true as I experienced it as well, I still prefer having interactions with my classmates and friends outside. They’re also having trouble working on the worksheets because of the due dates. They also mentioned difficulties  joining online classes due to sudden disconnections brought by slow WiFi.  But on the other hand, I’m glad that they remained strong and stable despite all the problems we encounter each day. As they say, every gising is a blessing.
For the past weeks, staying up late until 11PM-12AM became our unhealthy habit because of the urgent worksheets and activities we have to finish on time and to review for our incoming tests. For me, as much as possible, I try finishing these the soonest possible time to enjoy longer hours of sleep. How I wish to have enough rest to get ready for the next day, like a newly-charged battery of my cellphone.
For me, the best way to solve this is to remain focus despite of all the distractions. If you think the surrounding will be a source of distraction anytime, look for a conducive place where you can study peacefully. Another solution is time management. Managing your time wisely will help you to get things done more efficiently! Honestly, I have learned how to move real fast and accurate this school year. Mainly because our activities are all time bound. And the last one is to seek your family and friends support. Make time to talk to them so you can release the stress. It is very important that we take care of our mental health nowadays. You can ask some tips as well on how to do your worksheets, but never let them do it all for you as this is already cheating. Remember that you go to school to learn not only gain knowledge but to nurture values too.
