Top 10 Things To Buy With Your New Tent
Making purchases for your garden can be daunting, for beginners and experts alike. Knowing what you need and being prepared will make the process smoother, and ensure your environment is running just the way you want. Over the next few months, we will be publishing various “Top 10 Things to Buy” articles. These informative articles will be aimed to ensure you get the right equipment to maximize your success in the garden.
10. Lights
Can’t grow without them. Make sure to research the specific lighting needs of your plants. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are a fast growing lighting option, and may be ideal for your tent space. They run cooler than standard HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps, but don’t have the intense light that some plants thrive under. For those plants, the HID lamps are generally a better option. Also used are compact fluorescents and T-5 fluorescent fixtures. Lights range in quality, so stick with a good name brand like Sun Blaze, Feliz, or Eye Hortilux.
9. Spray Bottle/Shop Vac
These items will help you keep the tent clean. Clean gardens are usually free of pests and molds, so keep it clean.
8. Backdraft Damper
Keeps your environment sealed up from air and light to keep bugs and other pests out. Adding the backdraft damper also keeps light from entering the tent when fans aren’t running.
7. Timers
Plants need sleep too, so don’t run your lights 24/7! Conserve power and run a timer. Side-by-side research suggests that plants that get dark time grow faster than ones grown under 24 hour lights.
6. Trellis
Square footage in a small area is really important. Maximize your space with good pruning technique and a trellis net to train your plants to grow where you want them to. This ensures the optimum usage of your light.
5. Fans
Here is one of the most important, and overlooked, parts of a successful garden: the right fan! There are a lot of knock-off fans out there, so be sure to buy a fan from a reputable brand such as Can Fan or Max Fan.
How do I find the right fan for my tent?
Easy: know the dimensions of your tent. Take the cubic feet of your tent (width x height x depth), and divide by two. This number is the optimal CFM size of the fan for your tent. Match your filter up to this to make sure that you are running at the right CFM to maintain your environment.
4. Filters
Another overlooked item is the intake filter, which helps prevent the addition of molds and pests. Adding a filter to any fan will scrub garden odors out of the exiting air, keeping smells where you want them: inside your tent.
3. Mycelium Mushroom Bags
The all natural, compostable, CO2 producing fungi. Exhale and My CO2 Box are the two big names in CO2 bags, while Phenotonic is a growing, Arizona-produced option. Most bags will produce enough CO2 for a 4′ x 4′ space, though Exhale does also have an XL bagthat will work for a larger tent.
2. Hygrometer Thermometer
Always ensure your environment is locked in and running tight. The only way to do that is to know the temperature and humidity inside your tent.
1. The Tent!
Make sure you buy the right size tent for your fully grown plants. Not all tents are created equal: some tents are full steel construction, some have plastic corners, and zippers & stitching can be different also. Make sure you buy a tent that can handle years of abuse. We suggest Gorilla Grow Tents, as they are strong and durable tents. They’re even expandable, so they can grow as you do!
