hello creatures in my computer!! i just binged the entirety of the main series of SU so my hyperfixation on it (and peridot) are back!! so i decided to redraw screenshots of every episode she's appeared in in season 1!!

We seriously need to talk about improving the accessibility of scientific documents, particularly papers published in scholarly journals.

Most of these papers are accessible by PDF, meaning the paper has a set formatting the reader cannot change without using an external tool. So you’re stuck reading a paper with size 8 font, which sucks! :(

Most PDF readers, including text to speech tools and formatting tools, can make mistakes. Not to mention the choppiness of using text-to-speech on a PDF.

In the rare occasion you can get your hands on the webpage version of a scientific paper, the host wevsute almost never has any accessibility tools and you’re left having to find your own.

All these barriers present an issue for those who are blind and low vision, as well as those who are neurodivergent [in particular, ADHD and dyslexia]. We shouldn’t have to jump through so many hoops just so we can put a scientific paper in a format we can read.

I’m making this post because I want to bring attention to the issue. As someone working in a natural sciences, reading scientific papers has always been a huge challenge for me.

If anyone else has felt similarly, please share in the comments. And if you have any advice or solutions, please share those as well.

I did find one paper that aimed to find a solution to this issue, but the paper made it to pre-print back in 2021 and I can’t find any work that has been done since. I hope to bring more awareness to this issue because it is a significant barrier for me in my field.
