So I played Deltarune chapters 1-4 the other week (for the first time), and while I do have some old memories from watching Jack play chapters 1 and 2 when they initially came out, I've largely avoided the fandom and theories up until now. I've spent the last 2-ish weeks listening to theory videos in the background while working. Most theories are around Dess, the Knight, Kris, etc., but a particular phrasing of the weird route in one of these videos got me thinking of my own theory. If someone else has shared a similar theory to this before...oh well, I'm not double-checking myself before posting this.
The particular comment about the weird route suggests that the player is using Noelle specifically to break the game itself, thereby achieving a different outcome than what would normally be possible through a normal playthrough. This got me thinking that possibly, in order to achieve the "true" ending to the game, we, the player, will be required to play the weird route in addition to playing a "normal" route.
My mind went to a situation similar to the game OneShot. At the end of that game, the player, who has been openly treated as a completely different entity from Niko (much like Kris and the player), is given one of 2 choices. Either allow the main character, Niko, to return to their home, which would doom an entire world to death, or save this different world and the people in it, but in doing so, lose Niko's ability to ever return home.
Obviously, neither option is the perfect desired outcome. Regardless of the option you pick, upon starting a new game, the player is given an item that helps Niko remember the events of the previous game. From there, it opens a bunch of new character interactions and puzzles that eventually allows the player to complete the game in a way that lets Niko save this world and return home.
So, how does this relate to Deltarune currently? Well, we learned in chapter 4 that the Deltarune prophecy is incredibly thorough and specific in a way that we, the player, were not aware of up to this point. I mean, the prophecy literally predicts what a specific character will say exactly to the word. We learn that the version of the prophecy that we were told in chapter 1 by Ralsei was a very gross summary that left out a lot of important parts. But we also know that Ralsei did this to both protect Kris and Susie from the truth and as a way to see if they were able to change any part of the prophecy. If Kris and Susie knew all of the details from the beginning, they (and by extension us) would probably take steps to try to change things, but in doing so, fulfill it instead. (One often meets his destiny when trying to avoid it.)
Ralsei believed that if no one else knew the specifics and if they were kind enough while trying to save as many people as they could, they might be able to change how the story ends. But based on the sort of breakdown Ralsei has by the end of the chapter, he is fully convinced that nothing they can do will change it. We know that the story of Deltarune, as it is right now, does not have a happy ending. This is easily inferred by both Ralsei's insistence that we do not see the Last Prophecy as well as Susie's reaction upon seeing it. Smashing the glass, laughing repeatedly in a way that invokes an awkward nervousness, while calling the prophecy stupid when just early in the same chapter, she was excited to see more and more parts of it. All of this clearly alludes to a character's death—likely Susie's (based on her "Kris wouldn't let that happen" line of dialogue and then comforting Ralsei as he cries, saying that everything will be ok). ((As well as the fact that up to this point Susie has made it clear she wants these adventures to last forever, but suddenly at the end of the chapter she's saying "We don't have time" and "Tommorrow. We have to do something tomorrow." She's clearly talking like someone who has just found out they don't have a lot of time left)).
So let's think about this from a new player's perspective. Let's say once all of the chapters have been released, someone decides to play Deltarune start to finish. They've somehow managed to avoid all knowledge and spoilers of the game, but perhaps they've played Undertale, and so they go in with the knowledge that they should be kind and spare everyone. They get to chapter 4 and realize the game's ending is supposedly set in stone and that its an unhappy ending. So they do everything they can to try to change it, only for them to, of course, be unable to change the outcome. Whoever dies, dies. And perhaps the world is saved, but characters are left grieving and broken. The player thinks to themself, "Surely this is not how it ends," and they start thinking about every little hidden area or secret dialogue, trying to find something they missed.
Now, remember, this is someone who has had no spoilers on the game. But they remember during the secret S rank games that it comments on a "forbidden path" that starts with ice magic. They think back to Noelle in chapter 2. Is there something more that they can do with her?
In-game information makes it very clear that Noelle, as a character, has a habit of breaking games unintentionally—finding glitches and bugs as easily as someone might find a Korok seed in Breath of the Wild. So, what if you could use her to break the game of Deltarune? We currently don't know how deep the weird route will go in this aspect, but we, the player, are currently breaking and trying to use her like someone might use a GameShark to hack their DS. Let's say by the end of chapter 7, or however far the game actually goes, we use Noelle to literally break the game. The prophecy is completely unable to be fulfilled, but the game itself is now unable to achieve any sort of ending as the very foundation of the game unravels from us using Noelle.
But... perhaps this allows us to receive an item beyond the game's internal world. An item that we could take with us to a brand-new, fresh save file. An item that allows us to completely subvert the prophecy in a way that allows us to stop the Roaring from ever happening, but also saves Susie or Noelle, or maybe even Dess, if you subscribe to any theory that involves her disappearance and the connection to the main story (which is literally every theory right now tbh).
TL;DR
This is all just a really long way to say that I think playing the weird route, as uncomfortable as it may be, will likely be required if you want to achieve the best ending possible in Deltarune. In a game where "our choices don't matter," why would there be a route that allows us to break the very detailed script of a world that is crafted around an "unchangeable" prophecy? (We know it's a scripted world because of how Ralsei acts in the latter half of chapter 2, if you are doing the weird route. This is backed up even more with the reveal that he knows the entire prophecy in chapter 4, down to every detail. So his almost out-of-character reactions to things changing in an unexpected way in chapter 2 make sense.)
If you have thoughts or opinions for or against this theory, please share! I'd love to hear other people's thoughts, but remember to be respectful. :)
especially if this ends up a "duh, we all have known that for the last 5 years, where have you been?" situation :')

Might make a deltarune theory if I actually can gather my thoughts and write them down conversely
I’m sure someone else might have theorized already what I’m thinking but I’m not going to make any effort to check before posting my thoughts lol

I put in an order for one of those Percy daki pillows and I was wondering when those will be shipped? Idk if I missed an info post about that somewhere or not
You didn’t miss anything- I forgot to put that info back on the product (I had to delete and remake the product a few times when setting it up on my website some info was bound to get forgotten and I’m sorry about that)
I placed the order with my manufacturer last week and I’m estimating it will take between 4-6 weeks for them to get done (based on how long it took to get my tester made) so hopefully by the beginning of August at the latest they’ll be shipped out and headed to their final destinations!
You’ll get an email once I have them and can send them out :)
#thank you for asking#I shared some of that info on Twitter but I realize not everyone has Twitter or follows me there#I promise it’s coming#your paitence will be greatly appreciated!
