After attending a few music events recently that featured multiple bands dominated by males with maybe a 0-15 % female representation (with most of the female representation being singing rather than playing an instrument), I felt lady-deficient musically. I enjoy seeing male musicians and even all-male bands live, but I need balance. I need to see people like me onstage and I need to hear female stories expressed musically, and furthermore I want it to be easily accessible. 

So I asked two Facebook groups that I am member of -- Rockpool and Balanced Breakfast -- for suggestions of local music groups that include women to add to the few that I knew. When we music fans see lists of unfamiliar band names on flyers and events, we may not recognize that these bands are male dominated, and the female bands may not stand out to us either. There are also plenty of female solo performers that I already know and enjoy (although I tend to see them more at open mic events than at events where the lineup has been selected by a music promoter), and I am icompiling their names as well. 

I know that there are more men than women working in music locally.  I don’t expect there to be a 50/50 representation, but I believe that we can do better. I believe that promoters are favoring male bands when they schedule shows, probably subconsciously, and the promotions that filter through my Facebook feed seem to favor male bands. The women are out there (though we could certainly use more!), but it takes extra work to find them. I have done the extra work (with help), and I want to save music fans and promoters some trouble and make it easier for you to find female-centric music to enjoy and female singers and musicians to support, so I made the lists contained on this blog, which are available for the public to access. 

Let’s not forget our fellow musicians who do not identify as strictly male or female. So often non-binary gendered people get lost in the shuffle when we start choosing gender sides. It is very important to honor their voices and presence by recognizing them in media coverage (as well as real life), and by going out to support and enjoy their unique performances and perspectives. They are included on this page.

This is not meant to bring down male musicians or male bands. I actively support male musicians and male bands, especially those that I find to be female-friendly and with members who support local women in music.

Although I created different lists on this website, this is not meant to be a hierarchy of talent or measurement of how worthy a band is. There is a spectrum of female involvement, and all levels are valid.

This is simply a resource list, not an endorsement. I may or may not be familiar with the groups and individuals on this list.

If you or your band is on this list and does not want to be included, I am happy to remove you.
