Favorite/Least Favorite Technologies
Favorite Technology
I think my favorite technology that we learned about was all of the mashups that are out there and are continuing to develop every day. I didn’t even realize that these were called mashups and how they integrated so many different technologies and social media to make the experience come together for the user. Since we learned about them, I’m constantly thinking about apps in a different way and thinking about what different technologies are being pulled into making that one experience possible for the user. If I had to pick just one it would be Wheel of Lunch https://wheelof.com/lunch/
Least Favorite Technology
Minecraft. While I definitely see how this is useful for kids and a great creative outlet, it is beyond frustrating for me! I am not a huge fan of online gaming in general and communicating to others that you don’t know through video games isn’t really my thing so while I do see the benefits of the creative side of Minecraft, I can’t really get behind the virtual world side of it. https://minecraft.net/en-us/

Created Mashup
Going off the tinder idea I just found for bringing parents surrogates together, I want to create and app that would bring people looking for apartments together. Currently, you can go on craigslist and post if you have an open room and people looking for rooms can go there, but this app would bring those people together and also people who want an apartment but can’t afford to get one alone or want roommates but don’t know anyone else looking for apartments. You would fill out a profile, just like on a dating site, but with questions about what you’re looking for in a roommate/apartment instead of significant other. As someone who has used craigslist to find roommates, I can attest that the process seems similar to dating!

New Mashup
Here is a new mashup technology that we didn’t talk about last week. It is called Just a Baby and has been described as Tinder for sperm donors. The purpose of this mashup is to match parents who want to have a baby but cant with potential donor sperm, egg, or surrogate parents. In this era where we can get everything through an app, why not donor parents as well! In all seriousness though, the adoption process or infertility process can be very expensive, an app that allows you to find these matches organically can be very helpful and I imagine people will use this.

Minecraft and Second Life
Minecraft was much more difficult than I expected. After two semesters I can still only build simple objects and I still cannot play in survival mode without dying pretty quickly. I can understand why it is popular and I can see why kids who are probably more tech savvy than I am and are better at building can really find it as a creative outlet. When I see what other people have the ability to create it amazes me! I think Minecraft is more popular than Second Life. I imagine that Second Life is losing its popularity with the growth of actual virtual reality now. I think Minecraft will continue to grow in popularity and Second Life will continue to phase out.

Creating my own technology
Tall Girls Guide to Fashion
I would create an app that curates tall fashion. I am 5′11 and it is very difficult to find clothes that are long enough for me. My app would search clothing retailers sites for clothes that are labeled tall or long lengths and aggregate them for tall women. There are many apps and stores and fashion guides for petite women, but barely anything for tall girls. know this technology would be appreciated by tall women who find it hard to find clothes that fit.

Not Successful Tool
Yotpo makes collecting the best user-generated content and making full use of them for your business really easy. Curation is their latest feature to help you collect and use user-generated Instagram photos (with proper permissions).
While I think the concept of Yotpo is great and I imagine companies really like the idea. The pricetag is nearly $300 which to me seems steep for what it does. With a pricetag like this, I don’t believe the app will succeed.

What I’d Like to Learn
We have learned so much about social media in this class. One thing I would love to talk about is how social media is being used from a company or non profit standpoint to engage clients, customers, or donors. What are some innovative ways social media is being used now that people read mail and even email less? What are some ways it’s being used ineffectively or incorrectly to engage a community? What are some best practices out there? Are there companies, colleges, or non profits that have models you would suggest we look at as a best practice?

Social Media Since the Semester Began
1. Facebook continues to change and the popularity of live streaming is more and more popular. So much so that one man committed a murder on a live stream of Facebook this semester. The article one this is below

2. Twitter seems to be growing at least in the eyes of its investors. Ironically, after they shared a video on Wendy’s chicken nuggets.

3. Google+ has removed location services from its application. Now, instead, you are linked to you GoogleMap services, which is not only a mashup, but a more integrated experience for the user

4. Tumblr technology is also taking advantage of mashups. They have developed Cabana which now lets you watch videos while chatting with your friends. It’s like a virtual video hang out.
