attention aftg tumblr, I am in desperate need of help to find an old fic I read but forgot to bookmark on Ao3 and it’s driving me INSANE😭😭

So basically the fic was kind of an afterlife AU where the foxes have died and are in the afterlife, BUT, Neil is like a newly dead guy. They notice however that he can still be hurt, and find out that he isn’t actually completely dead yet. Turns out the moriyamas have been trying to figure out immortality or something, and Nathan is the only one who has successfully (through Neil) sent someone to the afterlife while keeping their body alive?? OH and all of the dead foxes can shift into actual foxes to be able to access the living world.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME FIND IT, LOL IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR MONTHS WITH NO LUCK.

Random Rec

Here’s a random rec for a quick beach read featuring fluffy/angsty andreil, ‘the optimal condition (for birds to take flight).’

It opens with Andrew all hot and bothered (but not like that) arriving in the steamy Maldives to join the Foxes celebrating Aaron and Katelyn as they renew their vows. 

The twins are ill-suited for tropical conditions and are mostly lobster red sweaty messes, but —  rejoice! — beefy Andrew supremacy reigns when he trades his black jeans and tee for “dark shorts and a black tank that does everything for his shoulders.” Dr. Katelyn lets her hair down and is glowing and happy and gorgeous. You know who else is gorgeous? Kevin. And a scarred, blue-eyed stranger who is sassy and…interesting. 

Island Boy Neil is soon shadowing the group, and Andrew starts saying yes to kite surfing and snorkeling and photos with his friends. Time grows short as it is wont to do. Attraction quickly builds to yearning, as Neil seems fated to stay half a world away while Andrew must return to his job and everyday life. Can Neil be freed from his paradise prison and the shadow of a mafia past so they can surf into the sunset? Have faith, dear reader. - A

“I’m not a hallucination…” Andrew says.

“Maybe I am.”

“You’re the realest person I ever met,” Andrew tells him. “You’re not nothing. You’re so fucking real.”

Their foreheads touch, their noses brush and they breath the same air. 

Andrew’s chest feels full of the sea and salt and longing for something he knows he can’t have.

Me and friends need to know! What is the posing hierarchical order of the animals?

I am ready to answer this. I have a very definitive ranking of my animals with regards to posing for photos. Here it is:

1. Cats. It’s hard to take a bad picture of a cat, and people will probably love it anyway because it’s a picture of a cat. Among my cats I would probably rank Merricat #1 because calico privilege gives her many interesting angles, then Mascarille because her white mustache is so dapper, then Morille—black cats are tricky to photograph but the fluffy void look works for them, somehow.

2. Chickens! They shot up to #2! They are also tricky subjects because they are very busy little persons in a constant whirl of activity, but any resulting blurriness is the photographer’s failing, not theirs. When you can get a miraculously non-blurry picture they always look humbly magnificent. Here’s Cordélia protecting Pirlouit’s hay (or protecting the hay from Pirlouit, you’d have to ask her):

3. Llamas. Pampelune looks lovely 100% of the time in profile, and 0% of the time in front-facing pics. She knows it and is always willing to turn her head so you can photograph her at her best.

Pampérigouste often looks good even when facing the camera because from this angle she will remind you of Napoléon in a way you can’t quite explain or pinpoint (it’s the ears)

4. Pandolf. He is a handsome dog but you need to take a lot of pictures if you want evidence of this. Like the chickens, he moves around a lot, but I won’t take full responsibility for blurry pics as he is supposed to know how to sit still. Unlike the llamas, he has a lot of bad angles, believe it or not. It’s because of his absurd nose. His nose could comfortably wear a clown shoe and that’s just not okay.

5. Pirlouit. I’m sorry, donkeys are not the most photogenic people. They lack the ostentation of horses—make a horse and a donkey stand next to each other and you’ll see which one is good at self-marketing. Donkeys have cumbersome ears, short legs, a bristly mane you could brush your teeth with and a tufted lion’s tail that belongs on a lion, and often look unsure of how to make all these parts fit together into a coherent brand. It’s okay. Pirlouit is charming in person and since you aren’t dazzled by his attractiveness in photographs you can’t help but notice his winsome personality.

The last entry makes it sound like this list is based on looks but that’s not it (else Pandolf would probably be #1 as he is so elegantly pointy)—it’s a combination of how many advantageous poses each animal has at its disposal and how willing they are to strike them. Cats aren’t known for their willingness to do anything opportune or helpful but they happen to strike cute poses when they sleep, and they sleep 90% of the time, so they win by default, which is a cat’s favourite path to victory.

Hi my name is Neil Nathan’iel Abram Fox Josten and I have short orange auburn hair (that’s how I got my name) with amber streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-neck and icy blue eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Nathan Wesninski (AN: if u know who he is get da hell out of here!). I’m not related to Kevin Day but I wish I was because he’s a major fucking hottie. I’m English but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale brown skin. I’m also a mobster, and I go to a magic school called Palmetto in America where I’m in the first year (I’m eighteen). I’m a jock (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly jorts. I love Target and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black hoodie with matching armbands and blue denim shorts, orange socks and black running shoes. I was wearing concealer, bandages, color contacts and brown hair dye. I was walking outside the Court. It was sunny and hot so I could go running, which I was very happy about. A lot of teammates stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.

Oh hello! Popping out of the aether to say look this is my latest Andreil fic and my first time trying my hand at a post-canon future rather than a full-on AU. 

Summary: 

It’s the morning before Neil has to fly back to Denver, leaving Andrew alone in Boston. The prospect of another long year of living in separate cities looms over them. But this time it’s different. This time they have a plan.

AKA. How to make long distance work according to Andrew and Neil.

definitely one of the most thoughtful and well-considered interpretations. love this.

I’m curious, how do you see sub Andrew being supported by canon? (I’m not leaning either way, that’s just not a take I’ve seen before and it’d be interesting to get your opinion)

Since a few people have asked me now, here are a few scenes in particular from canon that support sub Andrew, followed by some of my own thoughts

While there's obviously nothing in canon that says "Andrew has to be a sub!", there is also ample subtext that he could be, if only there were someone he could trust enough to not hurt him or take advantage, someone who respects him enough not to touch without permission, who would follow his boundaries to the letter and care for him while he was in a vulnerable state. And there's plenty of subtext about his character to imply that it's something he'd be open to, given the right circumstances. Let's take a look at a few instances:

This scene from the hotel in Baltimore:

Andrew shifted as if to get up and Nathaniel knew he was going to shut Browning up for good. Nathaniel knew better than to touch Andrew yet but he got as close as he could and framed Andrew's face between his bandaged hands. Andrew could have easily pushed him aside, but after a short pause he got settled again. Nathaniel flicked him a quick look, grateful for that compliance, before leveling another icy stare at Browning.

Neil looks at him and frames his face with his hands, and what does Andrew do? He settles down and stays quiet.

Despite the stressful situation, despite the fact that he's already so on edge from what has been a very emotionally fraught few days, he listens without question. Andrew, who notably barely listens to anyone else, especially when it comes to protecting his people. Just one look from Neil and he puts the claws away and lets him handle it, perfectly obedient.

There are more scenes like this throughout the series, of course, where Andrew listens to Neil and nobody else, such as getting him to agree to Thanksgiving with the Hemmick’s or to stop targeting his teammate's ankles during practice, so I won't list them all here.

Basically, once he decides that he trusts Neil, he'll pretty much do whatever Neil asks him to. He's not above submitting to what Neil wants (within reason, of course).

This bit of dialogue between them in TKM:

"Good," Neil said at length. Tugging a sleeping dragon's tail sounded like a good way to die a painful death, but Neil would be dead before Andrew's protection wore off. "I want to see you lose control."

Andrew went still with his hand halfway to the vodka. "Last year you wanted to live. Now you seem hell-bent on getting killed. If I felt like playing another round with you right now, I would ask why you've had a change of heart. As it stands, I've had enough of your stupidity to last me a week. Go back inside and bother the others now."

Neil feigned confusion as he got to his feet. "Am I bothering you?"

"Beyond the telling."

"Interesting," Neil said. "Last week you said nothing gets under your skin."

Now, initially, it's very easy to just read this as classic Andreil flirting (which, to be fair, they are blatantly flirting here). But as always with these two, there are layers of subtext happening.

The minute Neil suggests Andrew lose control, that he wants to see Andrew when he's not in control? Andrew freezes, clearly caught of guard. And then reverts to his typical tactic of pushing things he wants away with threats and insults.

Now what does that tell us? One, that he wants Neil, of course, but it also tells us that it's highly likely some part of him wants to lose control too. Maybe even willingly give up control, if only he could trust someone enough not to take advantage of him.

And then there's this little bit too, just a few paragraphs prior:

"I warned you not to put a leash on me."

"I didn't," Neil said. "You put that leash on yourself when you told me to stay no matter what. Don't be mad at me just because I was smart enough to pick up the other end of it."

"If you pull it again I will kill you."

"Maybe when the year is up, you will," Neil said. "Right now there's not a lot you can do about it, so don't waste our time threatening me."

Again - another scene that's very easy to read as just Andreil flirting (which, they are). But look at the metaphor Andrew chose - he told Neil not to put a leash on him.

We know he's in part referring to Neil manipulating him into releasing Allison and stopping him from injuring a teammate, but it's also a pretty blatant innuendo.

And then Neil reminds him that Andrew is the one constantly tethering himself to people with deals, that he keeps giving others power over him with promises. Neil is simply the first person to actually realize it and use that power, and Andrew doesn't quite know what to do with that.

So, of course, in typical Andrew fashion he follows up by trying to threaten Neil, pushing away the things he wants again. And Neil is clever enough to call him out on it, because he knows Andrew. He knows the threats are bullshit, he knows Andrew is just showing his teeth as a means of self-protection.

Additional thoughts:

Many people in the fandom view Andrew as exclusively a dom because of how he initially has to maintain strict control over his sexual partners and cannot tolerate being touched in return. 

I, however, disagree. I think he and Neil are both switches, personally, and here’s why:

Andrew doesn't fiercely maintain control of all his sexual interactions because he's inherently a dom. He maintains rigid control because initially that's the only way he can engage in sexual activity at all. But, we already know based on the progress he makes in canon and Nora's extra content that his need for rigid control eventually relaxes with Neil, and over time he's more comfortable letting Neil touch him back.

Essentially, my theory is this: Control for him was never a preference. It was a survival tactic. A necessity of his circumstances, a reaction to a childhood full of abuse, and he needs it less and less the more he heals.

And as he grows more comfortable accepting his own wants, he's able to accept that maybe, sometimes, what he wants is to give control to Neil, to let go and allow himself to be taken care of for once.

Just think about how potentially healing that could be for him too. Andrew, who clings to control in his daily life because for so long, control meant safety, finding a space where it's okay to let go. He can give up all control to someone he trusts not to hurt him, and nothing bad will happen to him because of it. He can let go, and he will still be safe, because Neil is there to look after him, and Neil would never hurt him.

Genuinely, I think its a part of his character and his healing that is so underexplored in the fandom, and I'd love to see more people dive into it.

Most popular one-shot: monster (in my bed) - which is possibly a little sneaky since it’s also the third in a series of standalones, but the AO3 stats have spoken. This is the one about monster!Neil and human!Andrew getting it on. Smut with a little plot.

Most popular multi-chapter: don’t fear (the reaper) just about cinches it from the Lavender AU by like 30 kudos at the moment. This was the first andreil story I ever wrote and takes us on an epic journey across the underworld, with Neil being guided by a “reaper” called Andrew. Also known for being the fic in which everyone wants the characters to actually die at the end. 

Favourite story you wrote: L’amour parle en fleurs - AKA the Lavender AU. It’s a story about grief and loss but also very much love and healing. It’s the story that means the most to me and the one that really made me fall back in love with writing. Plus the comments and the art that’s been created around it just make me so warm and fuzzy. TW//Character Death (Not Andreil) and yes, it has a happy ending. 

Story you were nervous to post: All of them!? I get the heebies about posting every time. If I pick one then probably one of the Exchange gifts - ie. my Jerejean for Hedy, caught by a low moon (AKA the Morocco AU) or the winter exchange fic, you mean you forgot cranberries too. I think it’s the quiet panic around whether or not the person you’re writing for will like it that makes it so intense. 

How do you pick your titles: Either song lyrics or occasionally poetry - I create playlists for every story pretty much so it’s often very connected to those songs.

Do you outline: Yes, to an extent. Sometimes the outline will be super useful, other times it’s just notes like “The thing goes here” and I will end up cursing past me. 

How many of your stories are complete:  So I have 13 finished stories, 3 WIPs and then The Morning AUs - which are kind of a beast unto themselves given some are like zero draft 10k fics, others are just premises, others are scenes or headcanons etc. All of those are written off the cuff and almost entirely without plot or plan on Twitter. 

In-progress: In terms of the WIPS - not your homeland anymore is definitely one I’m coming back to, as well as who will fix me now (AKA Andrew is a roofer and we call him Beefy Minny). But I’m also working on the sequel to the lifeboat AU - low quay, no pressure - which is a new standalone in which Neil is a former Olympic sailor, Andrew is a fisherman who volunteers with the local lifeboat (The Sea Fox) and they’re working out the new parametres of their rekindled. relationship. I love this world so much. 

Coming Soon: Well I’ve signed up for the Fall Exchange so probably that (I’m very bad at working on two things at once haha).

Do you accept prompts: Yes, for Morning AUs but I have a few no-gos so always worth pinging me via DM rather than a public comment. I especially love a long prompt too!
