Congratulations Sebastian!
Sebastian's Robotics Spin Club placed 5th overall at state competition AND received a first place trophy for Best Program!
Nearly 300 young robotics enthusiasts met on Saturday, May 3, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus to test their team’s robot in the Illinois 4-H BoxBot Robotics Competition. Local youth enrolled in the 4-H program in Winnebago County were represented by a team that competed against other 4-H robotics teams from across the state.
The challenge required the teams to design a model warehouse distribution center, then navigate a BoxBot Robot through the course. The robot was programmed to travel through the miniature warehouse, pick up items from shelves, and then return items to adjacent shelves, all while avoiding various obstacles along the way.
The local 4-H team, Winnebago Mindstorm Patrol, included members Miranda Dooley, Kielyn Jackson- Ramos, Jared Lee, Sebastian Martin, Ben Meyers, Charles Meyers, Max Ramos, and Nikolai Yun. Teams were judged on program organization, efficiency, team member knowledge, prototyping, and robot structure and design.
Curt Meyers, team coach, was impressed with how well his team worked together. Meyers stated, “Our team was the only one that used multiple robots and Bluetooth technology to complete the task.” “We placed fifth among the 45 teams represented and we also received an award for Best Program,” added Meyers.
Illinois 4-H strives to help youth learn skills for living. University of Illinois Extension-Winnebago County offers youth programming in the community and at after-school programs such as 4-H Tech Wizards. 4-H Tech Wizards is an engaging, after-school program that emphasizes hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

NLI Garlic Mustard Pull
May 3rd, 10 am
Nygren Wetland Preserve - Rockton, IL
Sturdy shoes, long sleeves, pants and gloves are recommended. Volunteers may bring their own snacks and water.
Garlic mustard is a biennial flowering plant from the mustard family. It is native throughout Europe and is one of the oldest spices to be used in cooking in that region. In the 1860s Garlic Mustard was introduced to North America as a culinary herb. North America lacks the 69 species of insects and 7 species of fungi that keep Garlic Mustard in check however, and it has become an invasive species throughout our region. It can become the dominant understory species in woodland settings, and often will out-compete native species for space and nutrients.
This is a great opportunity to see Nygren Wetland Preserve in the spring and experience nature first hand while learning about the native plants that grow there. Participation contributes valuable community service benefits to the environment and is a great way for families to do something together outside.
