Destany “Sky” Pete, a young member of the Shoshone and Paiute Tribes from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Idaho and Nevada, made a remarkable discovery that connected her community's health challenges to the loss of traditional foods—particularly an old recipe called toishabui, or chokecherry pudding.
Curious about the health benefits of this ancestral dish—especially its rumored cancer-fighting properties—Sky decided to take a scientific approach. She teamed up with Dr. Ken Cornell, a biochemistry professor at Boise State University who specializes in cancer research, to put the pudding to the test.
Together, they tested four different chokecherry preparations on uterine sarcoma cancer cells. Incredibly, only one showed results: the traditional pudding. Within 24 hours, the cancer cells began to die. The secret? The use of crushed chokecherry pits, a vital ingredient in the original recipe that had long been forgotten.
This wasn’t just a personal win—it was a cultural and scientific breakthrough. Sky’s research offered evidence that traditional Indigenous knowledge holds real, measurable health benefits. Her project went on to win First Grand Prize at the 2017 Elko County Science Fair in Nevada, beating out more than 440 other entries.
Sky now plans to continue her research, testing the effects of the pudding on other types of cancer cells over longer periods. Her work is a powerful reminder of the wisdom carried in Indigenous traditions—and the healing potential found in reconnecting with them.
