Stopping Exercise May Worsen Depressive Symptoms in Just Three Days, Finds Study
Exercise is well-known to benefit an individual’s mental as well as physical health. However, one must remember that pausing or putting a stop to one’s daily exercise routine can lead to hazardous effects on an individual’s mental health, including the return of depression symptoms, said a recent study.
The study, conducted by the researchers at the University of Adelaide and published in the peer reviewed Journal of Affective Disorders in July 2018, found that ceasing one’s regular workout sessions may lead to the development of depressive symptoms like continuous low mood, restlessness and irritability in just three days.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ed6c2a8ce2f0c96ebc82a62ff304ba8b/tumblr_inline_pifr70ZwYr1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Risk of depressive symptoms higher among female participants
The study results were based on an analysis of results from six different studies that followed 152 adults, of which 50 were women. Only those participants who had formerly exercised for at least 30 minutes, thrice a week for a minimum duration of three months were included.
On the basis of the analysis, it was found that the participants who stopped exercising developed depressive symptoms in the next three days or 72 hours whereas a few others began developing these after a week or two. “In some cases, ceasing this amount of exercise induced significant increases in depressive symptoms after just three days. Other studies showed that people’s depressive symptoms increased after the first one or two weeks, which was still quite soon after stopping exercise,” said lead author Professor Bernhard Baune, head of psychiatry at the University of Adelaide. In fact, the symptoms re-appeared even when the other symptoms of depression, like inflammation, were not present.
It was also found that the risk of developing depressive symptoms was much higher in female participants than men.
Further research needed to substantiate findings
A number of previous studies have suggested that exercising regularly enables the release of feel-good endorphins in an individual’s body. This, in turn, not only boosts the mood, but also calms the mind.
Experts felt that the study sample of the present study was not large enough to consider these findings to be absolutely true. Therefore, further research investigating the effects of exercise on depression needs to be done so that suitable recommendations on the right ways to include exercising in one’s daily routine can be made.
Exercise to maintain mental health
Julie Morgan, a Ph.D. student from the Discipline of Psychiatry at the University of Adelaide, suggested that one must include at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise in their routine every week so as to maintain good mental and physical health and prevent depression. A vigorous intensity exercise of 75 minutes can also be included to avail additional health benefits.
It is true that depression can affect anyone belonging to any group or caste. Therefore, it is important for every individual to stay preventive and avoid the risk of getting affected by the condition. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and practicing meditation can assist one in avoiding the risk of developing any mental disorders.

Mindfulness Effective in Reducing Incidences and Symptoms of Depression, Says Study
Depression, in the present times, has burgeoned into a problem of epic proportions. And what is unfortunate is the fact that, it’s majorly the adolescents and young adults who are facing the brunt of this debilitating mental disorder. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2015, 12.8 percent adolescents aged 12 to 17 (3.1 million adolescents) and 10.9 percent young adults aged 18 to 25 (3.7 million) had a major depressive episode (MDE). This was higher than the corresponding percentages prior to 2015. However, the rise in incidences among adults aged 26 to 49 and those aged 50 or older remained stable, added SAMHSA.
Often confused with general sadness and disappointment, depression is a serious mental health condition. It is mainly characterized by symptoms such as persistent sadness, gloominess, hopelessness and isolation. Depression in most cases seeps in slowly and over a period of time manifests into a chronic illness thus, affecting a person’s ability to carry out even normal day-to-day activities. In extreme cases, a person battling depression may also experience suicidal thoughts and tendencies.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6c2b987fed26991c411280f9c5e221e1/tumblr_inline_pi4jlosuRD1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
The silver lining is that depression can be treated provided appropriate medical intervention, including a combination of medications and therapies, is given to the affected person. The scientific community is also aware of the task at hand and is constantly striving to find newer and more effective ways of addressing the problems that lie at the heart of this illness. While advancements are being made in this regard, it’s a recent study that’s making all the right noise. It contended that ‘mindfulness’ can be effective in reducing the symptoms of depression and subsequently the incidences of major depression. According to the study, “for patients with subthreshold depression, who have not had a major depressive episode in the past six months, mindfulness training is a feasible method of preventing major depression.”
Effectiveness of mindfulness in reducing episodes of depression
Mindfulness is the psychological process of attaining awareness of one’s thoughts and actions. It can be developed through meditation and other forms of training. An individual practicing mindfulness is more vigilant of the surroundings, his/her thoughts, feelings and body sensations. If a person is suffering from depression and practices mindfulness, then they would be aware of the triggers of depressive symptoms much before they occur.
In the aforementioned study, of the total 231 participants, 115 were allocated to the behavioral activation with mindfulness (BAM) group for treating their subthreshold depression in primary care; while 116 were assigned to the casual care unit. During the study, the first group was invited to attend two-hours of weekly mindfulness training sessions for eight consecutive weeks. After 12 months, the researchers found that the group reported a favorable change in the levels of symptoms of depression whereas, no such change was noticed in the participants of the other group.
Supporting the findings, another study conducted by the University of Oxford identified mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) to be as effective as antidepressants in preventing a relapse of depression. According to the study, since during mindfulness therapy, the individual is trained to pay closer attention to the present moment and get rid of negative thoughts that might trigger depression, he/she eventually learns to identify the triggers of stress and signs of depression much before they actually occur.
Road to recovery
Depression is a medical condition and can be treated only through supervised medical intervention. Although therapies like mindfulness or CBT can help in expediting the recovery process, they are in no way a replacement for the traditional therapies and treatment procedures.

Early Risers at Lower Risk of Depression, Says Study
A person’s chronotype or body clock is believed to impact his/her health. In recent times, the prevalence of mental health disorders like depression and anxiety is being studied in the people who sleep and wake up early and those who sleep late and get up late. The risk of developing depression according to one’s sleep and wake up pattern was recently explored by a joint team of researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder, Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and the Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.
The researchers investigated data of some participants from the Nurses Health Study – II, which is an extensive, continuing population study aimed at discovering the risk factors for significant long-term disorders in females. Celine Vetter, lead study author said that a modest association was found between chronotype and depression, which could be linked to an overlap between genetic pathways, chronotypes, and mood. To date, this study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, is the most extensive one exploring the relationship between chronotype and depression.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a5542db13f37ca47fdfe9bc519158429/tumblr_inline_pe5y2jbmGX1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Early birds less susceptible to depression
For the study, the researchers investigated the data of 32,470 females with an average age of 55 years. At the baseline in 2009, all were depression-free. These females registered changes in their health by filling questionnaires which were given twice, once in 2011 and next in 2013. The research team took into consideration the environmental factors comprising light exposure, work schedule, an individual’s sleep-wake cycle, weight, the presence of chronic disorders, sleep duration and the level of physical activity. As many as 10 percent participants were identified as night owls, while 37 percent were found to be early risers and the remaining fell in between the two categories.
The researchers reported that late risers/late sleepers were mostly living on their own and had a less probability of being married. They also had a higher susceptibility to smoking and had an uneven sleeping schedule. After adjusting for the probable modifiable factors, the researchers found that the early birds had a 12-27 percent reduced propensity to depression in comparison to the intermediate-type participants. Compared to the intermediate types, the night owls had a 6 percent higher possibility of developing depression. Vetter said that there is a possibility of a chronotype affecting depression but not being driven by lifestyle or environmental factors.
The researchers said that the genetic factors could have a bearing on the chronotypes. Some studies have established a link between the genetic factors RORA and PER2 to the depression risk and sleep cycle regulation. Vetter suggested that there may be several factors affecting sleeping pattern which might cause the depression risk. However, it is challenging to investigate individual factors and this is an area where more attention is needed. She also noted that even though the sleep-wake cycle could affect the susceptibility to depression, not all late risers and sleepers will develop depression. Vetter said that by bringing in some lifestyle changes, one could improve their chronotype.
Fight against depression
Depression can be kept at bay to some extent through timely lifestyle changes and certain precautions. The sleep cycle can be improved by following a proper sleep hygiene, taking nutritious but light dinner, devoting some time to physical activity each day, practicing yoga and meditation, etc. However, these measures may not always help as there are various factors that can cause depression. If there are visible depressive symptoms, it must not be ignored or self-medicated. One must take professional help at the earliest.

Do not delay treatment of mental disorders
Dealing with depression can be challenging not just for the person suffering, but also for his/her family that has to bear the mood fluctuations and live with the fear of losing their loved one. Feeling low? Watch These Movies to Lift Your Spirits
At times, we all have bad days. And sometimes, the feeling of sadness can persist for weeks, months or even a year. People have their own ways of coping with melancholy. Some socialize, some travel, some read books and some watch movies. There might be a day when we feel unmotivated and do not have the energy to do anything. Either a person can sink into the gloomy feeling or snap out of it to feel better.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/87611a8b906ef4653e4d5368cbeca861/tumblr_inline_p70xj8zrCd1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
There are various ways to cope with such a situation. Even watching a film can be therapeutic. More so when it’s a positive movie that inspires to live life with hope and courage. Consider watching these films:
Little Miss Sunshine – The movie is about a seven-year-old girl who gets selected to participate in a beauty pageant. The entire family travels from Mexico to California to fulfill the child’s dream. The movie depicts that despite the eccentricity of members who have suffered setbacks, they all need each other’s support to navigate through life. It teaches the importance of a good support system to lean on during hard times.
The Bucket List – The movie is about two men who grapple with terminal lung cancer. Both set out to travel the world to accomplish their wishes on the bucket list. The movie teaches that life is precious. Instead of thinking about past which cannot be changed and future that’s uncertain, one should focus on the present and try to live completely in the moment. It also teaches us that there is no age limit to achieve something if one truly wishes for it.
Rocky – When local boxing champion Rocky Balboa gets a chance to fight with ace champion Apollo Creed, he takes the challenge head on. The movie teaches that the only way to do something miraculous in life is to take up the challenges it offers. Nothing is impossible to overcome if one has the resolve to achieve what he/she wishes for.
The Pursuit of Happyness – The film is a true example of the fact that no matter what happens, with hope and determination everything can be conquered. The brutal honesty with which a father-son duo battle the hardships of life shows the importance of staying positive.
Life is Beautiful – This is another movie about a father who shields his son from the horrors of war through love and humor. When gunfire and cries can be heard everywhere, the man subtly teaches his son to face the situation with courage. The film inspires people to keep smiling despite the odds and do not lose hope.
Films are a great source of entertainment but they can sometimes uplift spirits and provide a different perspective of dealing with life. It’s important to keep fighting and finding inner strength.
Road to recovery
It is quite normal to feel in shambles and feel bogged down by life’s challenges. Hardships and misery can strike anyone, but it’s possible to overcome the blues and get back to normal life again. Employing Culturally Sensitive Therapy to Cure Depression
Culturally sensitive therapy encompasses an understanding of a patient’s religion, race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and culture by a therapist. This type of therapy is usually practiced to comprehend and respect the difference of opinions and value systems of people belonging to different cultures. It also allows a therapist to view his/her culture in a broader context and has a positive bearing on his/her relationship with the client.
Culturally sensitive programs can be used to foster a deeper connection with someone, win his/her trust and improve the treatment outcomes. Use of similar language and display of shared traits can help boost the patient’s confidence, generate comfort and increase motivation levels that maximize the effectiveness of therapy. Openly respecting and showing admiration for one’s culture can reassure the patient to invest faith in a therapist’s ability to heal.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f34fc4d0a40b025ff40c29fd99b8dc6b/tumblr_inline_p3oz671DBp1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Using familiar imagery, providing comfort through a known environment, incorporating teachings from patient’s religion and regulating emotions through mindfulness techniques are essential for a culturally sensitive treatment for mental health disorders, most commonly anxiety and depression. It can ensure that the immigrants, women and other marginalized sections of the society get a renewed sense of hope and confidence in the health care system as well as in their own abilities. The core idea is to bring in diversity in the treatment so that patients can connect with it and embrace willingly. One of the past studies critically reviewed culturally sensitive treatments for depression and established that they are effective in reducing the symptoms especially among racial and ethnic minorities.

Genetic Link Between Alcohol Dependence and Major Depression
The co-occurrence of depression and alcohol dependence is already known. During low phases of life like death of a partner, retirement, loss of a job or chronic illness, one might feel the blues and reach out for a drink. Since alcohol is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant, it can produce depression-like symptoms, like sedation, lethargy and sadness. Although the association between the two has been established at the symptomatic level, how they are connected at the molecular level is unknown. A recent study, published in the Jama Psychiatry in December 2017, attempted to establish the genetic connection.
The study comprised 7,822 participants out of which 4,653 subjects were African Americans, while the rest (3,169) were European Americans. All the participants were interviewed for their alcohol dependence and major depression (MD) symptoms. Subsequently, they were geneotyped and their single nucleotide variants were studied.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b6827472b3eaa6c2d259c3bf67466220/tumblr_inline_p1ktcuYw681u0kvdv_540.jpg)
A significant association was found between the single nucleotide variant rs139438618 with both depression and alcohol dependence in the African American population, while the association was found to be insignificant in the second group. The authors also identified that participants with higher polygenic risk scores for depression and neuroticism had an increased likelihood of suffering from comorbid conditions of major depression and alcohol dependence.
On the other hand, a negative association was established between the comorbidity and polygenic risk scores of education attainment and overall quality of life. A positive correlation was also established between the polygenic risk scores for intracranial volume and alcohol dependence and major depression, while the same was negative for putamen volume.
The link between the single nucleotide polymorphism with comorbidity in the African American group shows a population-specific genetic risk and additional studies are warranted to arrive at more conclusive outcomes.
Recovery road map
Depression is one of the most common mental disorders afflicting millions of people all over the globe. It can permeate every aspect of a person’s life, making a dent on personal and social relationships, risking job and restricting employment opportunities, causing financial troubles and homelessness, and forcing the sufferer to take recourse to alcohol or drugs. A person may also contemplate suicide in the absence of inner strength and a good support system.
With effective medications and other evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), patients can learn coping skills and overcome their mental condition. It is important to note that the interaction between genetics and environmental factors determine the predisposition to depression and therefore, the symptoms cannot be dismissed as negative thinking.
It is crucial to be aware of the warning signs to ensure appropriate treatment. Several self-help strategies can help a person manage depression like talking to a friend, reading a self-help book, writing a journal, eating nutritious food, doing some form of physical exercises, or practicing yoga, meditation and mindfulness techniques.
Depression does not discriminate between rich and poor, good and bad, or black and white. It can affect anyone regardless of one’s religion, race, age or gender. Tackling PMS-Induced Depression and Suicidal Feelings
Anxiety, depression and irritability are common symptoms for women experiencing premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The hormone progesterone inhibits the functioning of serotonin, a hormone responsible for regulation of moods. It also impacts the functioning of the amygdala, which is responsible for responding to environmental cues, controlling emotions, improving memory and imbibing survival instincts.
Though most women experience some form of PMS, such as bloating, severe pain and body ache, some may experience a more chronic form, known as “PMS on steroids” or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The symptoms are so severe that women living with it have contemplated ending their lives. Apart from the severe pain, PMDD is marked by depression, confusion, low self-esteem and self-loathing.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ea0f02fa6e265a189176577348aadb7d/tumblr_inline_owlczrVVBo1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Though initially PMDD’s existence was met with skepticism, it is now included in the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Many women have taken umbrage over this labelling as they consider that it would not benefit those with the condition, rather perpetuate the stigma associated with the disorder. For a correct diagnosis, the following three criteria should be met:
The symptoms should be in accordance with the menstrual cycle for a minimum of two successive months.
The severity should be such that it disrupts normal day-to-day activities.
Depression, which is critical to this condition, should be reported in the days of ovulation leading to the first day of the period.
Suicide in women is more likely to happen during the second half of their menstrual cycle. However, according to Dr. Ulla Botha, a senior lecturer and psychiatrist at the department of psychiatry in University of Stellenbosch, the occurrence of suicidal thoughts is more in women who have had a prior instance of depression. She says, “It is true that patients who already suffer from depression and possibly already have suicidal thoughts can definitely experience a worsening of their symptoms as a result of mood fluctuation caused by PMS.”
Natural means to relieve anxiety and depression
Though antidepressants are the most common way of treating depression, there are certain natural remedies to control the stress and discomfort. Some of these are listed below:
Emotional freedom technique (EFT): It includes acupuncture therapy, where one can release pain and discomfort by tapping sensitive areas of the body. Unlike traditional acupuncture therapy, this does not make use of needles. It focuses on tuning mind with emotions.
Nutritious diet: Eating fresh and organic foods generate positive emotions. A well-balanced diet comprising essential nutrients and minerals keeps the energy flowing. Dark chocolate is also a mood lifter but it should be eaten in moderation. Women should avoid caffeine, alcohol and white flour during those days.
Nature walk: Nature is the best healer. Taking a walk in the serenity amidst trees and streams is delightful to the mind and releases negative thoughts.
Art of letting go: PMS or PMDD symptoms might be indications that the body needs more care and love. Due to their multiple roles, women often feel the pressure of modern living more than men. At times, it is better to let go of certain things instead of striving to be perfect in all areas.
Sometimes, anxiety and low mood could be a result of thyroid malfunctioning. It is advisable to get the check-up done to correctly diagnose the underlying problem. Overweight women who are less active physically are also more likely to suffer from severe PMS.
Get treated for depression at the earliest
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists reports that it is quite possible for 85 percent of menstruating women to exhibit at least one PMS symptom. However, PMDD is rare. In case a woman feels acutely depressed or has suicidal thoughts during the monthly cycle, it is essential to approach a therapist at the earliest. There are effective remedial measures to tackle the problem and help cope with the pain and mood swings.

Ways Dogs Help Keep Depression at Bay
“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”
– Roger Caras
The words of wisdom by the famous American wildlife photographer and writer underline the role dogs have been playing in human lives. Nowadays, dogs come in various shapes and sizes; there are big ones, small ones, furry ones, cute ones, among many others. Commonly regarded as “man’s best friend,” the bonding between humans and dogs spans 15,000 years. In this age of multiple forms of social isolation, social disconnectedness can have deleterious impacts on the person.
In such situations, the role of pets becomes immensely crucial in alleviating depressive symptoms. Through their wholehearted affection and playful gestures, pets succeed in inciting positive feelings. Several studies have shown that dogs can reduce tension and improve mood in humans. For individuals challenged with depression, having a dog alongside the normal treatment can help in coping the depressive symptoms more effectively.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b6827472b3eaa6c2d259c3bf67466220/tumblr_inline_orue5jY8YS1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
They assist in reducing stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness among the people going through depression. Moreover, they encourage people to indulge in exercise, playfulness, etc., which are necessary for overcoming depression and improving cardiovascular health. But at the core of it, through their unconditional love and companionship that can be matched by none, in the short span of time they grace people’s lives.
Listed below are some ways by which having a dog in company can thwart depressive symptoms:
Increases exercise: A research shows that behavioral intervention like exercise is good for overcoming depression. Even moderate-intensity exercise is beneficial in inciting happier mood. By having a dog around, a person grappling with the challenges of depression is more likely to take it out for a walk, hike or run that can assist him or her in completing the daily quota of exercise. Moreover, dogs can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones and boost chemicals associated with feeling good.
Offers companionship: Social isolation leads to both negative physical and mental health outcomes. Individuals living in isolation are more prone to experience loneliness and tend to suffer from the higher rates of morbidity and mortality. In addition, it is also associated with depression and cognitive decline. However, caring for a dog can make a person feel loved and wanted which provides valuable companionship that can keep the symptoms of depression at bay.
Instills routine: Depression can make a person feel that he or she has expended more energy than he/she had. Such individuals have a harder time accomplishing daily tasks and are more likely to be demotivated. However, a person with depression can benefit from having a steady routine. Morning activities, feeding and taking the dog out for a walk can create a routine in a person’s life.
Offers stress-relieving touch: Touch can calm the regions in the brain that respond to threat. Research has shown that physical contact like touching, hugging and holding hands can boost the level of the hormone oxytocin, which reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and decreases the chances of heart rates. Similarly, stroking or hugging a dog can uplift the mood of individuals going through depression, and provide other health benefits.
Opens the door to socialization: Individuals with depression are often averse to socially interacting with others and have a difficulty in maintaining healthy relationships. However, having a dog around can help these individuals in starting and maintaining new friendships. For instance, dogs are a great excuse to converse with other dog owners and allow for different sorts of interactions in pet stores, clubs and training classes.

One-third of Phd Scholars at Risk of Mental Disorders, Says Study
“The pursuit of Ph.D. is an enduring daring adventure.”
― Lailah Gifty Akita, author
As students ascend the stairs of higher studies, the forthcoming challenges and stress levels magnify, particularly due to the emphasis upon research that demands diligence and endurance in all circumstances. During such life-changing phases, stress can make or break the life of a student.
The development of mental health problems can pose as a barrier in attaining overall well-being and career goals. Mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are some of the most common conditions experienced by the public regardless of their age, sex, ethnicity, social status, etc. The onset of depression during the phase of higher studies can greatly affect one’s academic results.
Although the prevalence of depression within the academia has not been well documented, several studies have thrown light on the growing number of suicides among students due to unrelenting stress caused by the bone-breaking academic burden. They have emphasized upon “academic stress” being a strong predictor of mental disorders among Ph.D. students.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bd6e7c5cd5124e999c4e06f5473fbbff/tumblr_inline_orsdw9nzYY1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
A study, based on a survey of 3,659 Ph.D. students at the universities in Flanders (Belgium), found that the participants to be at risk of development of a common psychiatric disorder, such as depression. The study was co-authored by Kaita Levecque and Frederik Anseel of Ghent University.
Emotional distress faced by PhD trainees
The findings of the study contribute to the growing pool of knowledge about the prevalence of mental health issues faced by Ph.D. students during the course of their studies. The study based on the assessment of the survey feedback came out with the following findings:
51 percent of respondents indicated psychological distress by admitting having experienced at least two symptoms of poor mental health in recent weeks.
32 percent of respondents indicated a risk for common psychiatric disorders by reporting at least four symptoms, indicating a risk for common psychiatric disorders. This risk was more than twice as prevalent among highly educated comparison groups.
The most commonly reported symptoms were being under constant strain, being unhappy, and depressed, losing sleep due to worrying, and inability to overcome difficulties or enjoy day-to-day activities.
Facing challenges like taking care of family needs due to conflicting work comments was the biggest predictor for experiencing mental health issues.
Increased symptoms of mental disorders were also witnessed due to the mismatch between high job demands and low job control.
The study also found out that various factors that can offset the risk of common psychiatric disorders, include:
Consistent support of an inspirational supervisor.
An interest in an academic career and taking Ph.D. as a good preparation for a nonacademic career and as an added value for the prospective employers.
According to Nathan Vanderford, assistant dean, Academic Development, University of Kentucky, ignorance about mental health problems among Ph.D. scholars is a major risk factor for developing mental disorders. He further elucidates, “Data such as this should make the issues irrefutable and should, for ethical and moral reasons, force the hand of these entities to take on the responsibility of helping to provide Ph.D. trainees with the support they need to navigate the very stressful journey of earning a Ph.D.”
The co-authors, Levecque and Anseel, also pointed out that steps, such as facilitating work-life balance or offering Ph.D. students clarity on job expectations and career prospects both within and outside of the academia, can help stop the onset of depression or other common psychiatric disorders. Instead of putting the blame on the academia for the psychological distress among students, appropriate actions should be taken to root out the cause. In addition, Ph.D. students can greatly reduce psychiatric distress by enhancing their ability to spot the signs and symptoms of mental disorders.
Make higher studies rewarding
Many individuals who experience the symptoms of psychiatric disorders often remain silent about their conditions instead of seeking help due to the fear of stigma, harming one’s career prospects, and retaliation from the family members and friends. Such measures will only aggravate their symptoms and hardships; therefore, it is advisable to seek early intervention.

Collaborative Care: Setting Milestones in Mental Health
When it comes to delivery of mental health services across the age groups, older adults are likely to get the short end of the stick. Although great advancements have been made in the reduction of mortality rates and improvement of health and overall well-being, mental health care providers continue to predominantly exclude older adults. This is a major public health concern that not only threatens the United States, but the entire world.
For most Americans, old age is an important phase when they want to remain jovial and adventurous like before. Since people are now living longer and healthier than before due to the advancements in the field of medicine, it has caused a dramatic increase in the proportion of the older population. The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that the growing global population of older people will almost double from 12 percent to 22 percent between 2015 and 2050.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/13a9ef83b84aeffc79ea73f0d85c35bc/tumblr_inline_oq4pcxf8Bm1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
On the one hand advancements in the field of medicine have proven to be a boon for older adults, on the other far too many older adults have to deal with difficult life situations and mental illnesses that affect their ability to draw out the most from life. Considering such a contradictory situation, it calls for greater commitment from both government and private organizations to develop policies and mental health services that are particularly aimed at older adults coping with the symptoms of mental illnesses.
Collaborative care – a remedy for depression in old
Old age is often accompanied by the weakening of organs and deterioration of mental sharpness. Moreover, compared to the youngsters older adults are more prone to developing problems like depression, anxiety and dementia. Other physical and social factors, such as loneliness, lack of appropriate facilities and support, etc., further accentuate the risk of developing mental disorders.
Such conditions usually arise due to other health complications, major life stressors, or the use or cessation of certain medications. Therefore, older adults require an approach that is different from the standard approach used for screening mental disorders. Until recently, collaborative care for older adults was believed to be capable of alleviating the symptoms of only the severe cases of depression. However, a recent study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that older adults with subthreshold depression can also benefit from collaborative care.
Simon Gilbody, Ph.D., University of York and colleagues had randomly assigned 705 older adults with subthreshold depression (as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders –IV (DSM-IV)) into two groups for delivering depression treatment.
One group received the usual care from their physician, while the other received collaborative care and primary care. The patients in the collaborative care group had participated in six 30-minute sessions spanning over seven to eight weeks that focused on the need to address the behavioral repercussions of depression, such as the lack of social interaction and absence of rewarding activities. Some key findings of the study are as follows:
Progression of subthreshold depression did not vary between the two groups at the four-month mark; however, at the 12-month mark, it reduced greatly for the collaborative care group compared to the usual care group (15.7 percent versus 27.8 percent).
The collaborative care group also witnessed improvement in anxiety, functional status and more compared to the usual care group.
These findings suggest that short and relatively cost-effective methods can alleviate subthreshold depression in older adults before the disorder becomes severe. However, before widening the scope of collaborative care among all forms of depression, there is a need for conducting more studies and researches.
Seek collaborative care to leverage benefits
Oftentimes, older adults in the U.S. do not receive mental health services for their problems. Various factors, such as denial of the problem, inadequate funding, and other barriers like the existence of stigma around mental illness prevent the deliverance of treatment to those who need it the most.
If you or your loved one is battling the symptoms of depression, it is imperative to seek professional help. The Depression Treatment Centers of California assists in accessing the finest depression treatment centers in California that offer evidence-based intervention plans. Resident Doctors Are More Prone to Depression, Feel Experts
Affecting nearly 6.7 percent of American adults every year, depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. Though word “depression” is often used as a synonym for sadness, it is much more than that – a serious mental disorder that needs immediate medical treatment. Untreated depression can lead to chronic mental disorder or induce suicidal thoughts in the patient.
Today, a lot of people find their job to be the culprit behind depression and other mental health conditions. When it comes to medical profession, the prevalence of depression increases manifold, which results in increased medical error and poor patient care. Known as physician depression, the condition is commonly seen in resident doctors, which results in high suicide rates among medicos.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fab71a59fabec47cdc1569bb3c5f94d2/tumblr_inline_ooy6p9OmRG1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Need to devise effective strategies for preventing and treating depression among physicians in training
According to a 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), one in four young doctors experiences symptoms of depression. The study highlighted that depression in doctors is not only detrimental to the new physicians themselves but also to the patients they care for. “The increase in depression is surprising and important, especially in light of reforms that have been implemented over the years with the intent of improving the mental health of residents and the health of patients,” observed the study.
As part of the study, the researchers analyzed depressive symptoms in over 17,500 medical residents, after collating the data from 54 different studies conducted over a period of five decades. According to the findings, 28.8 percent of physicians-in-training exhibited signs of depression, with the rate of its occurrence increasing significantly during the study period.
It has been observed that doctors are more hesitant and secretive about their mental health condition than the general population owing to the stigma attached to mental disabilities. Many doctors believe that it is their responsibility to stay fit, both physically and mentally. Therefore, when they are diagnosed with a serious mental disorder such as depression, to them it could mean an end of their career as well as reputation.
According to Dr. Srijan Sen, M.D., Ph.D., senior author of the study and a member of University of Michigan’s Depression Center, Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, and Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, “The increase in depression is surprising and important, especially in light of reforms that have been implemented over the years with the intent of improving the mental health of residents and the health of patients.”
To combat this dilemma, many resident doctors with depression seek refuge in illegal drugs and alcohol. In most cases, alcohol abuse or dependence is a direct result of distress, including emotional exhaustion, suicidal ideation, depression and quality of life, found in doctors, especially surgeons. At times, the higher rate of substance abuse in doctors can be attributed to their easy access to drugs and substances, as compared to the general population.
Leading a depression-free life is possible
If not treated timely, depression may mar the quality of life. The constant suffering and pain push people into darkness and grief. It is necessary to seek expert advice to rid oneself of making depression a way of life. Magnesium Rich Diet Could Treat Depression
Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in the United States. A person diagnosed with depression usually feels low day after day, as well as experiences other debilitating symptoms that interfere with his/her daily activities. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately 16.1 million adults aged 18 or older in the U.S. had at least one major depressive episode in 2014. It has become a serious public health concern.
One of the biggest obstacles in the treatment of depression is its diagnosis. Most of the times, depression is seen as a normal mood swing that will go away with time. However, once the diagnosis is clear it is important to make certain lifestyle changes, such as regularly exercising or taking proper rest. In extreme cases, treatment with medication and therapy can become a prerequisite to lead a normal life.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4fb74617f3ba3f2e5993b9f304d195ea/tumblr_inline_omw90fYNjZ1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Studies have shown that an individual’s diet plays a major role in determining one’s overall health and wellbeing. When it comes to serious physical or mental disorders, a healthy and wholesome diet becomes a necessity. It has been found that in cases of depression consuming a diet enriched with magnesium can effectively control the symptoms.
Magnesium deficiency can cause depression
Magnesium is an essential mineral that keeps an individual healthy as well as ensures a proper mental functioning. According to a study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), deficiency of magnesium makes it difficult for an individual to meet his or her neuronal requirements, which, in turn, causes neuronal damage eventually leading to depression.
Magnesium deficiency can cause various debilitating symptoms such as muscle cramps, facial tics, poor sleep, headaches due to stress and chronic pain. A few other symptoms include anxiety, hyperactivity and restlessness with constant movement, panic attacks, agoraphobia and premenstrual irritability. Experiencing such symptoms could be a warning sign for depression.
Mitigating depressive symptoms by increasing magnesium intake
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an individual in the age group of 19-30 years is recommended to have a daily intake of 400 mg (for males) and 310 mg (for females). A daily intake of 410 mg (for males) and 360 mg (for females) is preferable to prevent magnesium deficiency.
Magnesium, an abundantly found substance in the human body, regulates a number of diverse biochemical reactions, such as protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, and blood pressure regulation. It is also required for producing energy, maintaining structural development of bones, as well as regulating the neuronal function. However, one of its most important roles is to ensure the optimal functionality of the thyroid, which can go a long way in preventing depression.
For people who lack sufficient quantities of magnesium in the body, the NIH recommends increasing the intake of leafy vegetables, such as spinach, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains; foods containing dietary fiber; breakfast cereals; and other fortified foods, which can substantially improve the deficiency.
Seek professional help for depression
While antidepressants may show some unwanted side effects, treating depression is one of the most necessary priorities for those battling debilitating depressive symptoms. If the medication is causing harm, the patients should ask their physicians to change them. The risks associated should be weighed conscientiously before the condition deteriorates.

5 Warning Signs of Depression in Children
Anxiety and depression are becoming prevalent in the United States, so much so that even children are increasingly falling prey to them. Today, more and more children experience persistent sadness and disruption in behavior that eventually interferes with their normal activities including schoolwork, interests, family life, etc. However, the good news is that despite being a complicated mental disorder, depression is treatable.
Sadly, depression is rapidly growing among American children, with as many as 2 out of 100 young children and 8 out of 100 teens believed to be suffering from serious depression, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). Alarmingly, parents and caregivers still have no clue about what really helps or harms when it comes to treating a depressed child. The situation becomes much more harrowing when the symptoms of the disorder go unnoticed for a long time, which can have lasting consequences for children.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d897abc7e8de6b87dd2e69475d37fa9a/tumblr_inline_omseyipUhI1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
How to help children with depression
At times, parents tend to ignore the onset of depression in their children, believing the symptoms to be the normal psychological or emotional changes that occur in every child during his or her growing years. However, ignoring the early symptoms of depression might aggravate the condition, leading to lifelong repercussions. Thus, the first step toward raising a depression-free child is to identify the warning signs and use practical, everyday strategies, apart from consulting a health care expert, to reduce the child’s risk of developing the mental disorder.
Some of the common symptoms of depression in children are:
Excessive irritability and anger: If the child gets irritated and angry on the smallest of matters, it is time to seek help from his or her psychiatrist. Extreme behaviors in children are not something that can be taken care of at home or at school. In fact, such behavior should not be considered normal, as it could be a probable sign of depression.
Withdrawal from family and friends: It is important for parents to be excellent observers and notice any significant changes in their child’s behavior. If the child frequently looks for opportunities to stay alone or engages in activities that keep him or her away from family and friends, it could be a sign of depression.
Frequent aches and pains: Although aches and pains are part and parcel of the developing phase in a child’ life, it could also be a sign of depression that needs immediate medical intervention. One must keep a check on the frequent stomachaches and headaches, which usually do not have any obvious explanations, as these could indicate the onset of depression or a similar disorder.
Difficulty concentrating: If the child who had been an excellent performer at school is unable to concentrate on his or her studies or any other activity, it could be a sign of depression.
Changes in appetite and sleeping patterns: A child who is on the verge of developing depression might show significant changes in his or her eating as well as sleeping patterns. While some children might begin to like foods that they used to dislike earlier, others might completely avoid the food that they once loved. Or they could either start overeating or not eat at all. Likewise, a depressed child either tends to oversleep or faces difficulties in getting even 40 winks.
Seek medical help for depression
To address the problems of depression and other mental health disorders in children, a more holistic approach is required which strikes at the fundamental cause of such problems. Timely intervention can help in faster recovery from depression, however, one must not delay or things can get out of hand.

Beat Depression Post Chronic Illness
For many people who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness, life becomes synonymous to negativity and hopelessness. This is because chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease or HIV/AIDS cannot be cured completely so far, and hence, take a heavy toll on such patients, even emotionally. They often lose all purpose in life. For many, it is an uphill task to deal with certain chronic ailments, due to enormous changes in lifestyle or limitations in the patient’s mobility and independence. Gradually, such patients are unable to pursue the activities they once enjoyed, which ultimately undermines their self-esteem and could lead to depression.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), depression is common in people suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. However, the good news is that this kind of depression can be easily tackled with proper medication and care.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/69eb1d1cbb70edb2f861ec64d4f51e78/tumblr_inline_omdwt0dlZl1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
However, there are certain self-help strategies, which can help a person fight depression associated with a chronic physical ailment. Some of them are:
Staying hopeful: It is important for a person fighting a chronic illness to stay strong. One should never lose hope even in the worst of situations and bravely deal with feelings of denial, anger and grief that may arise in such situations. Staying hopeful and believing that there is still a lot that can be done can help a person get rid of the resulting depression.
Keeping oneself busy: Staying busy can greatly help in keeping negative thoughts at bay. This is important because isolating oneself can actually ruin the condition as well as exacerbate depression. Meeting new people, engaging in activities or joining social groups can provide the person with a strong support system and keep one occupied.
Maintaining a healthy diet: Nutrition plays an important role in combating any form of mental or physical illness. When fighting a chronic health condition, one must consume nutritious food to not only ward off any negative feelings since certain foods help in boosting mood and promoting positivity but also to regain or maintain physical strength that can further boost one’s mental state.
Being positive: Staying positive is essential for successful recovery from any form of mental illness or chronic disease. Developing a positive attitude may not be easy for a person fighting a deadly disease, however, one can try to stay upbeat by adopting certain self-help techniques such breathing exercises or yoga. This helps calm the mind and redirect one’s thoughts.
Setting realistic goals: Setting achievable goals and working towards them can instill positivity. Doing so boosts self-confidence and helps one deal with any physical ailment in an effective way.
Beat the blues
While antidepressants may show some unwanted side effects, treating depression is necessary for patients battling a chronic disease. If the medication is causing harm, the patients should ask their physicians to change them. The risks associated should be weighed conscientiously before the condition deteriorates.
A holistic approach is required to address depression in chronic patients, which can root out the fundamental cause of mental health problems among such people. 5 Warning Signs of Depression Relapse
When a person with depression joins a rehab center or takes help from a mental health expert, it is expected that he or she would lead a healthy life post the treatment program. Apparently, the recovering patients assume that once the treatment is complete, they will not experience the symptoms of depression ever again in their life. But this is not true. In reality, symptoms of depression may crop up long after the treatment is over.
Precisely, completing one’s treatment at a rehab center does not provide a permanent shield against depression and related mental health conditions. There are certain situations that can cause relapse and can make it much more difficult to live normally.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2d22fa4916f4ab10828b7e90abcca47d/tumblr_inline_om13ukeWAl1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Clearly, recovering from depression or any mental health condition is an ongoing process. Therefore, it is important to keep a check on one’s feelings or consult a therapist, in case the symptoms start worsening.
Here are some symptoms that indicate the relapse of depression:
Social withdrawal: Withdrawing oneself from social circles is a common symptom of depression. If a person who has recently recovered from the mental health condition starts distancing himself from social situations. Again, it is probably the sign of depression relapse. Depression makes the person feel low on energy and does not let him or her enjoy the social events. Experiencing any of these symptoms should make a person alert and seek professional help from good rehabilitation center.
Changes in sleep patterns: When a person experiences trouble in sleeping or sleeps a lot, it could be a sign of depression. Ignoring such symptoms might worsen the existing situation, making the recovering patient more prone to relapse.
High irritation level: If irritation begins to interfere with a person’s everyday life, it is probably the sign of depression relapse. When depression begins to redevelop in an individual, it increases his or her level of irritation or anger, and even makes it difficult for him or her to cope with a stressful situation. Studies have shown that men behave more recklessly and violently as compared to women when depressed.
Disliking oneself: A person undergoing depression relapse often develops hatred toward oneself, which can lead to low self-esteem and hopelessness. Such people start criticizing themselves for the tiniest of things and even feel guilty for the mistakes that he or she has not committed. Focusing excessively on one’s flaws and issues is an indication that the person is redeveloping depression.
Fatigue: Depression is a condition that makes a person exhausted and tired without doing any task. The person begins to feel low on energy and finds it difficult to complete even the smallest of tasks. If the person begins to experience too exhausted to move out of his or her bed, it is a definite sign of depression relapse.
Help is just a call away
Although depression can be overwhelming, effective treatments are available for the disorder. With treatments for depression becoming both cost-effective and easy to avail, a recovering patient or his loved ones must seek professional help. Use of multiple Social Media Platforms Increases the Risk of Depression - Study
Social media has become an inseparable part of every individual’s life. So much so that to expect a person to spend even a few minutes without being active on any of the social media platform is unimaginable. Apparently, similar to an addiction to drugs like cocaine or marijuana, even social media addiction is habit-forming, which can get worse over time.
A new study by the researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Research on Media, Technology and Health (CRMTH) suggests that individuals who are active on a variety of social media platforms are more likely to develop depression and anxiety, as compared to those who spend more time on social media but use lesser number of platforms.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8a1c624cbaa79ffee42b759747ef9a6d/tumblr_inline_olaurkTf5F1u0kvdv_540.jpg)
Individuals using 7-11 social media platforms had 3.1 times chances of developing depression
Scheduled to be published online in the April issue of the journal “Computers in Human Behavior,” the study revealed that people who used the maximum number of social media platforms were more likely to develop depression and anxiety, as compared to those who used fewer platforms, regardless of the total time spent on the overall social media.
“This association is strong enough that clinicians could consider asking their patients with depression and anxiety about multiple platform use and counseling them that this use may be related to their symptoms,” said the lead author and physician Brian A. Primack, M.D., Ph.D., director of CRMTH, and assistant vice chancellor for health and society in Pitt's Schools of the Health Sciences.
As part of the study, Primack and his colleagues enrolled 1,787 U.S. adults in the age group of 19 through 32 to assess their social media use, in 2014, based on an established depression assessment tool and questionnaires. Each participant was questioned about the 11 most popular social media platforms of that time, including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine and LinkedIn.
It was found that individuals who used 7 to 11 platforms had 3.1 times chances of developing higher levels of depressive symptoms as compared to their counterparts who used just zero to two platforms. Moreover, people who used the maximum number of platforms were 3.3 times likely to develop high levels of anxiety symptoms as compared to those who used the least number of platforms. During the course of the study, other factors that usually contribute to depression and anxiety, such as race, gender, relationship status, household income, education and total time spent on social media, were kept under control.
However, the study could not clearly indicate the directionality of the association between the social media usage and the onset of the mental health condition. People who experience symptoms of depression or anxiety are more prone to use various social media platforms as an outlet for their emotional upheavals, while many others who try to maintain a presence on multiple platforms, ultimately, fall prey to depression and anxiety. However, further research is needed to understand the exact correlation between the two.
Why does social media usage trigger depression and anxiety?
A number of theories have been proposed by researchers to prove that multi-platform social media use may aggravate depression and anxiety. Some of the theories put forward by Primack and his team are:
Multitasking that occurs when switching between platforms leads to poor cognitive and mental health outcomes.
Each platform has a distinct set of rules, and cultural assumptions, which can be difficult to navigate, ultimately leading to negative mood and emotions.
An increased risk of committing mistakes when using multiple platforms may, in turn, increase the risk of repeated embarrassments.
Seeking professional help
Apart from reducing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, curbing the use of social media can actually help people save time.
