The Muggle Driving Test
It was the week before September 1st. The week before Rose Granger Weasley begins her first ever year at Hogwarts. It was an exciting time in the Granger Weasley household.
But there was one big thing that was standing in between all these first time events. Ron had to conquer the biggest test that even muggles had the nerves for. A driving test...
Hermione had already claimed her license several years back. But with work getting busier at the Ministry of Magic, it had to only be a matter time for Ron to get his.
(We all know Ron can drive a flying car, as we saw in the Chamber of Secrets) but keeping it on the ground in between 2 lanes was another story.
As Ron and Hermione are seated, clenching each other with nerves. Ron’s name is called by the tester. “Ron Weasley, please proceed to your car to begin your test”. This was it, Ron was about to step back into the drivers seat. But this time with a complete stranger. It was like sitting his O.W.L’s again. But with no magic.
Before Ron had the chance to step outside, Hermione pulled him aside to have a word. “Please use no magic what so ever! I don’t need another enquiry involved with you at work” demanded Hermione. Before Ron had the chance to respond, Hermione jumped back in “and don’t confound the examiner! You know how I feel about those charms.”
Ron insisted that there was nothing to worry about, gave her a kiss on the cheek and walked out towards the car.
As Ron was sitting in the front seat with the tester, he noticed that she was very ordinary muggle. This one woman had pulled back brown hair just like Hermione did, she spoke very blankly and didn’t crack a smile.
“My name is Karen and I will be your examiner. There are two parts to this drive test today. At the end of the first part we will pull to the side of the road and I will go over your score count to ensure there haven’t been any driving misconduct. Do you understand everything I have just said?” Ron took a deep break and spoke “Nice to meet you Karen and yes I am ready to begin.”
As they began to drive out the DMV driveway there were so many thoughts going through Ron’s mind, “what happens if I do get my license? What happens then? I will be like every other muggle in London. Except I’ll be the one carrying around a wand everywhere I go and an emergency pouch of flu powder in the back of the car.
“Turn left when safe to do so.” Said the tester.
Ron nodded in agreement.
As the test continued on we soon came to the end of the first part. “Okay Ron, pull over here on the side of the road and make the car safe”. So he places it in park and the awkward silence begins whilst she adds up the scores.
As Ron sits there, he can’t stop thinking about starting a conversation with Karen about what he ‘does for a living’. But what would he say?
“I had to take my whole day off for this test. I am the manager of the toy store over on the corner of 12th and 34th in central London.
She responds with, “Thats nice, but Ron you don’t need to make conversation with me whilst I am trying to add up your scores.”
“I know, but I want too. I don’t like sitting in quiet situations, that’s why I work in a toy store.”
Karen just sat there nodding her head as if not to give away how he was going on his test.
A few moments later, she had finished adding up the scores and they were back into doing the driving test.
As Ron continued on, he noticed something different about the car. It was making a rather distracting vibrating sound from the front of the car. He couldn’t help but think “what do I do? Should I use a spell to fix it and hope the tester doesn’t notice me and end up in trouble with the ministry? Or do I just leave it and hope the car doesn’t explode?”
“What is that noise?” Said Karen.
Ron quickly had to come up with something, so without thinking... he came up with just nothing but word vomit.
“It makes that noise occasionally, it’s just the air conditioning unit.”
Karen had decided to end the test early in case it was a mechanical issue.
So as Ron was pulling back into the DMV driveway, he couldn’t help but see Hermione I’m the building looking out the window sticking up 2 thumbs up as if to think it went well.
It seemed as if everything was going fine until the vibrating.
Stepping inside the DMV, Hermione steps straight up to Ron and whispers in his ear: “you didn’t confund the examiner did you?”
“No of course not, but the car did start making a funny noise. I don’t know what it was, so I will take it to Harry’s house later for him to have a look at. I know he is good with cars” says Ron.
“Well let’s just hope it’s nothing then! Or else I will have to place a spell on you.” Said Hermione with a serious tone in her voice.
“Ron Granger Wealsey!” Was called from the tester he had with him.
“Despite the mechanical issues on your vehicle, I am happy to say you have passed!”
Ron trying to contain him excitement ran straight to Hermione and said, “I didn’t do anything to her. Otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to remember anything about the car making a funny noise”
“Very well, let’s get home and starting getting ready for the new year at Hogwarts. It’s an exciting time for Rose after all!” Said Hermione .
