closed starter for @verndarixx location: the shore
the cold, salty air blew through santiago’s dark hair and caused the tip of his nose to turn pink. as gregarious as he was and as much as he was enjoying the festivities in the longhall, his heart was pulling him towards the shore. the water was his home and being on dry land too long made him antsy. he closed his eyes for a moment, letting the breeze off of the water fill his senses. when he opened his eyes, he noticed a blonde nearby and upon realizing it was sigrid, a wide smile tugged on his lips.
he walked towards her, a skip in his step. “mind if i join you?” he asked, giving her a gentle nudge before glancing out over the ocean waves. “would you keep it a secret if i snuck back into the black wraith?” he raised a brow, half joking.

the brunette didn’t take his friendship with mare for granted — he knew he’d someone wiggled his way into her heart, whether she wanted him to or not. anytime that he could earn a smile from her, santiago felt on top of the world and couldn’t help but feel heat rush to his cheeks. from the day he’d met mare on the drowned wraith years ago, he’d been enamored and he would do anything to get her attention.
i’d rather be hopeless than a land dweller,” he countered with an amused grin. he shifted in his seat, not able to sit still. “i’ve never claimed to have patience…only charm,” he winked playfully before running a hand through his hair. “i will always long for the sea — it’s where i belong. i look best when i’m steering the drowned wraith, don’t you agree?” he joked, secretly hoping she’d pay him a compliment. “content, huh? i’d say that’s unacceptable. we need you to be excited, thrilled even!” a warm, but shy smile pulled on his lips and he glanced down for a moment to compose himself, “i’m glad i could add something positive to your night.” he looked into her eyes and shook his head, “no, not yet. i’m sure it’s exciting there. i wouldn’t mind sneaking out of here to on an adventure,” he replied with a lopsided smile. “would you go with me? or are your duties here?”
mare senses him before she sees him. it's not a matter of the abilities of a seer, it's simply a matter of how much warmth and familiarity santiago brings to a room. he's theatrical with his approach, and at the sight of the grin on his lips, she finds herself smiling back despite herself. it is difficult—if not impossible—not to feel a certain warmth in the wake of santiago's presence. she thinks it quite akin to the brightness of sunlight reflecting off of ocean water: brilliant, freeing, comfortable. it's infectious, even if she'd never admit that aloud.
"you're hopeless," she teases, although she can't help but agree. there's nothing quite like being at sea. "you've barely been here long enough to warm a seat, and already you long for the water. never any patience." there's no bite in her words; it's all in mere jest. she shrugs at his question, red hair slipping over one shoulder. "i'm content," mare says at last. with an affectionate eye roll, she adds: "but, no—you have been the most interesting part of my night so far."
green eyes dart up to look at his face. "have you explored the forests at the edge of the clearing just yet?" the seer wants to add that she needs a moment away from the chatter, but manages to refrain.

closed starter for @ephemeriis location: the longhall
santiago’s eyes darted around the longhall, looking for familiar faces when he spotted mare and a giddy grin spread on his lips. sauntering over to her, he grabbed a goblet of ale off of a nearby table and approached the red-haired seer. “my feet don’t belong on dry land,” he sighed over dramatically, flailing his arms childishly before huffing and taking a seat beside her.
he would much rather be on the sea — preferably on the drowned wraith, his home — than be here honoring the late high jarl. he enjoyed the festivities, no doubt, but he was antsy and admittedly ready for a dive in the ocean. he took a huge gulp of ale before carelessly slamming the goblet down on the table in front of them. “are you enjoying yourself, mare? met anyone interesting?” he questioned before teasing, “surely no one more interesting than yours truly.”

a reckless but talented helmsman for the drowned wraith, exiled from the silvershore clan.
STATS
name : santiago the reckless
age : 28
ship : the drowned wraith
family : estranged mother and father
personality : jovial, gregarious, reckless, facetious

BACKGROUND
santiago was born into the silvershore clan and his parents expected a great deal from him, even as a young child. however, he was always getting into trouble and he never took anything seriously -- much to his parents' chagrin.
he always felt called to the sea -- that was the one place where he felt like he had purpose and talent. at sea, he couldn't hear his parents' condescending words instead he found peace, even in the rockiest waves.
as he grew up, he realized he didn't want to be a part of the silvershore clan -- he didn't care for the politics of the clan and desired a life at sea, so at sixteen he abandoned the clan and was subsequently exiled. luckily, he had built a boat to escape his old life and soon after, found his way to the drowned wraith. impressed with his sailing, he was quickly brought on board and trained to be a helmsman. he knows the way around the ocean better than he knows the back of his hand and he finally feels like he has a home amongst the members of the drowned wraith.
he's a bit of a mess and reckless -- especially on the ship, but he's talented and trusted. santiago loves being surrounded by others and is friendly, always chatting with people and he knows no stranger. despite his jovial demeanor, deep inside he misses his parents and he mourns the life he never had of a respected, well-behaved warrior who made his parents proud.
HEADCANONS
santiago often dives off of the drowned wraith for fun, purposefully stirring up panic amongst the leaders and elders
he longs for peace and stability, but he feels like that is not in his destiny
despite being a pirate, santiago is terrified of fish. he hates seeing them when he's swimming.

unlikely friend : someone perhaps from another ship or clan who's very different than santiago and they bring out the best in one another!
