However, we are dunking on George Lucas, not cultural differences. The man accidentally made something cool in the 70s. People think it’s very deep, because it’s very deep to them and that’s really cool. It was not deep to our georgey, he’s just some boomer. That’s what people are making fun of.

Most of the names don’t even have any confirmed meaning and no one knows which cultures or languages they’re supposed to be inspired by. It’s largely made up nonesense! (yes i know ashoka is a sanskrit name)

He didn’t have some sort of honorable, culture appreciating intentions when naming his characters, they were just supposed to sound cool, space-like and ding ding! foreign to the viewer.

He might as well have named a character Master Zam-Budertes Häusl and his Schüler Foutre Lebordel. Doesn’t mean shit but it’s ~“inspired” by different cultures~

It’s not the same mindset at all and pretending that it is actually does the opposite of what you’re advocating for here. The sad thing is, english (or basic) is the default in star wars just as it is in our world.

I lose my mind every time I see someone joking about the fact that star wars characters are either named…

“basic” names: Luke, Ben, Cody, Finn, etc.

And then sometimes they’re completely made up and “weird” Space Names like: Obi-Wan, Padmè, Ahsoka, Asajj, Qui-Gon, Anakin, Mitth'raw'nuruodo, etc.

The reason this bothers me so much is because its the exact same mindset in the real world when people believe English is the default.

The world of star wars is a billion times larger than this planet and the idea that unique names that you've never seen before is odd? That's insane to me.

especially because a lot of those names come from or are inspired by actual real languages and cultures that aren't English.

can you imagine being obi-wan kenobi, grownass man and established jedi successful in his career, and realising you've fallen in love with a goddamn twenty year old. anakin is at peak young adult awkward. he has no social skills. he has no idea how to mingle. he still expects to be told to take his vitamins then gets mad at you for doing it. he makes weird inadvisable friends and loses them just as quickly, and every single decision he makes is an obvious mistake. he's twenty and the in-universe equivalent of a snot-nosed undergrad barely passing his university classes, meanwhile obi-wan looks over at anakin after a day of fifteen missed comms because anakin needs guidance on how to do the damn laundry and realises he's fallen in love with the guy

the embarrassment. the sheer humiliation. obi-wan may never recover from this, i certainly wouldn't

this worked so well with my mom that we were able to repair our relationship. I‘m 23 and i genuinely enjoy hanging out with my mom. she acknowledged her past mistakes and apologized. we have clear boundaries and i see her at least once a week.
