Here’s a short birthday story for you!

It had been an adjustment, definitely. Perhaps it was from using too much Barian magic, but Christopher was now officially…a thing. His head looked like a cross between a horse and a dog, standing upright. His once erudite and stately voice was now a series of shrieks and barking. At least he still had his hair, although his new paw-hoof things could barely hold a brush. Regardless, Christopher insisted on continuing on as if everything was normal. When asked for a cure, Christopher would only shake his head or make a brief growling noise.

He always came to the lab on time with his father, still clacking out calculations to the best of his abilities. He delicately ate lunch with his seemingly endless rows of teeth. It was mildly unnerving, hearing his former mentor eat in the break room, but Kaito knew Christopher couldn’t help it. He still had better table manners than Kaito.

One day, Kaito was walking through an alley because he didn’t want people to see him. He also refused to go on public transportation, due to Christopher’s horror stories about the Heartland City public transit system. Suddenly, an armed thug peeled himself from the shadows and demanded Kaito’s money. Of course, as the son of Dr. Faker, he never carried any money so he was dead for sure. Just as Kaito was about to call Orbital, a loud screech filled the air.

"What the?!" exclaimed the thug, eyes wide in fear.

Swift as lightning, Christopher came up from behind Kaito and ripped off the thug’s head and began to noisily chew on it, bone fragments flying from his horrific mouth. Then, as quick as it started, Christopher dusted himself off and put a paw-hoof thing on Kaito’s shoulder.

Let’s go home, shall we? he asked telepathically.

Kaito jumped.

"You can talk?!" he explained.

Christopher shrugged.

Always have.

"You gotta stop doing that…," muttered Kaito.

No.

Kaito looked up at Christopher’s mildly glowing equine eyes. Prickles crawled up his skin. No, today wasn’t a good day to get in a fight with his horse dog demon friend. If ever, honestly.

So, despite being mildly put off, Kaito went home safely.
