âThat can always be arranged, yâknow? You can come to my place, since you donât want me in yours.â Aaron wouldnât deny that after not seeing her for so many years, Scar had grown into a beautiful woman, but if they hadnât been friends for long, this back and forth banter would probably seem as if they were being serious. âYeah, heâs a fucking cheapskate, but I get meat discounts from time to time, which is great.â As her mention of beating him up, he let out a mocking âOhhâ at the woman. âIâm sorry, Miss I traveled the world. Whatever youâve tried, canât compete with this, Iâm sure.â He shrugged nonchalantly while sporting a smug grin, which slowly faded away as she spoke again. âIâm not dumb to mess with an ex that runs the show and could ruin me for life, though we actually get along pretty well despite all. If that helps you to sleep at night.â
âThatâs already been arranged, hasnât it? Tonight, your place, Iâll bring goodies,â All Scar hoped tonight would be, however, was a nice and relaxed evening in good company but sheâd tease Aaron regardless, test how far he'd go. The brunette eyed his form and released a scoff but in reality she pretty much agreed with him, she believed he could be more intimidating of the two if he wished to. âTwo exes getting along? Pretty well? What is this, a 90s sitcom? I donât believe you one bit, something stinks here-- and itâs not a half-dead rat rotting behind the dumpster,â she teased. âWhat does the mayor have on you, seriously? Apart from your lousy high school pick up lines,â Scar admittedly had strayed from the path to being a model citizen, even before those pesky murder rumors, so she wondered if Aaron had too.Â

Lizzie gave a sad sort of smile as she released Scarletâs hand. She felt bad for bringing up her siblings and gave a small sort of scoff at the question lifting her mug instead. âIâm not the one who cheated.â She murmured before giving a small shrug and a sigh. If there was anyone who could understand her current situation it was probably Scar. âProbably, just donât know how to bring that up. Weâd been together so long and now everything has changed.â
âYeah, the son of a bitch did.â Scar scoffed, tossing her glossy brunette locks over her shoulder. Clearly it was her frustration talking, it was hard to stay neutral in the matter because of how protective she was of Lizzie. âHave you two stayed in touch?â The brunette asked eventually, returning her gaze to the other woman. Scarlett wouldâve pulled a disappearing act a long time ago but she understood Lizzie wasnât anything like her and she might want to face her fears and problems. âWhen was the last time you talked to him?â

He could remember the last time heâd seen her. Heâd thought of that moment, wished heâd said more or stopped her, hundreds of times. It was strange, to look back and not consider that the final time heâd ever see her, now she was right in front of him. âYour -you auntâs? In Connecticut? You - Why didnât you call? Or - I donât - You couldâve written a letter! You knew my address, we didnât move, I -â He stops himself from continuing, trying to justify both the anger boiling and the strange sensation of relief that had bloomed across his chest for the second he saw her. âYou were gone! I never - I thought you might come back one day, or - or that something terrible might have happened! You just disappeared in the night - I - I found your room empty when I climbed onto the roof!â He was scared, is what he means. And he was right to be - Scarlett never came back, and Nicky never moved on, not really. He drank it away and wrote the most lovesick books and pretended he wasnât still hurt.
The where portion of Nickyâs set of questions Scarlett was settled. Clumsily, but settled nonetheless. And it was the truth. Scar said nothing more, fearing any additional information might lead to the whole truth. Now, moving onto the more aching part. Why. Why? Because we were so young and stupid and in love we couldnât keep our hands or lips off each other. Because my parents would let me see you and tell you. Years of pent up hurt and anger poured onto her and Scarlett found herself speechless, spooked even. Words were stuck in her throat and it was harder to breathe. Her gaze dropped to her hands. Lord, how empty they felt. For someone who had spent most of her days running away, escaping her thoughts to be confronted like this? It was a living nightmare. Scar looked up, a silly part of her hoping the look on his face to tell herwhat to do but there was nothing there but question marks and hurt. To make matters worse, the part that almost made her smile was the one about the roof. He had always liked to climb onto her roof. Romeo, but a better version. Her very own bandit coming to steal her away in the night or kiss her goodnight. âI-- Iâm sorry, I canât-- I canât do this,â her voice cracked at the end there and she stood up from her beach chair, ready to leave. However, she couldnât so she ended up turning back to him. âNicky, did you really think there would be a happy ending? Did you come back, looking for a happy ending for your next novel? Donât bother-- There are no happy endings here,âÂ

âexactly! I have to prepare you with useless facts youâll probably never use,â maggie said with a laugh. she appreciated scarlettâs friendship and the fact she always listened to her when she went off on these tangents. glancing down to her journal, maggie shrugged her shoulders. âjust a study Iâve been writing a report on. iâm doing a dive with whale sharks tomorrow and i wanted to brush up on my knowledge. how are things going over at the hotel?â
âYou better do your research, if you end up being a whale sharkâs snack tomorrow, Iâll have no other choice but to wage a war against all sea creatures. And since I know you care about all of them, make sure nothing eats you tomorrow.â Scar flashed a bright smile at Maggie before clasping her hands together, thrilled as a waiter set a plate before her. âIâm starving, threatening my staff takes a lot of energy. ... That is also the answer to your question. What else do you want to know?â The brunette jested, or was she? She gazed at her food some more before picking up a fork. âAre whale sharks even dangerous?â

Ah, so it wasnât just a mirage, is the only thought he has once she says his name right back. Itâs weird, he was pretty sure it had been decades since sheâd said his name, but he felt like he was sixteen and following her around the hallways of their high school like a lost puppy once again. He stares for a few more seconds, before he steps around her, giving her no real excuse to complain now that his shadow is cast on some other poor sunbather. âYou - I canât - Where did you go?â Itâs all he can think of - no small talk, nothing else. Heâs searched for answers for years upon years, and now he has the chance to actually grasp at that. âItâs - you were just gone and I tried to find you for years -â there was plenty more to that statement - heâd lived for years in a fog, heâd run away from everything heâd dreamed of, heâd disappeared into bottles and the company of anyone whoâd have him, and the worst part was somewhere, deep down, he still fucking loved her - but all of that was counterintuitive to getting the answers. Right then, he needed to know where and why. The rest could wait.Â
Scarlett, as self-indulgent as always, took her sweet time gazing at the father of her child, taking a better look at him. He looked different, as handsome but different. What struck her the most were his eyes. Sea-green pools she would drown in any day, nothing about them had changed. Their son's were of the same shade-- it was one of the few things she had noticed about him before they had torn him from his motherâs arms, ignoring her cries and screams. Eventually as it was her turn to speak again, her gaze drifting away. His question, this and the rest which might follow would force her to relive those horrors sheâd had to go through, her parents had put her through alone. Was she ready? Hell no. However, hadnât she been dreaming about seeing Nicky again for decades? Peering up at the sun, her eyes fluttered closed. Swallow me whole, please. âWe, uh, we went to my Aunt in Connecticut.â Was all she could muster. A frown creased her brow, she could feel her chest swelling with sadness. She was an idiot, this đ close to disappointing him and herself for the second time in their miserable lives. Lord, she had to do better. What if she couldnât? His words caught her attention, however, and her gaze snapped back up to him. âFor-- Years? Nicky, where? ... Why?â

âPretty sure you can afford a very good lawyer to get you out of it anyways,â he quipped, flashing a playful smirk at her. âWhat? Afraid I might tie you up and rob you?â He maintained a serious expression as he stared at her while taking a drag, but he was no way offended by her words, just messing with Scarlett. When his friend commented about meat, the man snorted loudly, shaking his head in the process. âWell, your loss, Scar. Not to brag, but been told is the best meat around here,â he winked at her. âOh, look at you with your fancy new friends. Iâm stating the obvious here, Iâm nowhere near of being as well as you âfinancially speaking I mean, âcause from here,â he tapped his temple with his index finger, âIâm still beating you up.â
âExactly,â cockier than a person in her situation should be, Scar smirked. The woman had some doubts about reuniting with an old friend but as long as they kept making fun of each other, everything was alright. âAw, Aaron. Iâd hope if you tied me up itâd be for different reason. But yeah, you robbing me is one of my fears... Hey, canât blame me, everyone around here knows old Jeff is a goddamn cheapskate. At least my new friends are fuckinâ polite, unlike some. You should be careful or else I might beat you up...â she poked her own bicep. âFrom here.â Grinning, she took a drag of her cigarette, realizing the man didnât answer her question. âIs that the way you talk to all your rich friends, I wonder. Including... Serena *insert her maiden name*?â

âAndâŚseven, eight!â Folasade counted as she moved through the final steps of the dance she was demonstrating for her adult class. âThen after you pause for a two-count, you start from the top, make it drop,â she sang, unable to help herself. The popular song WAP by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion had been stuck in her head for the past couple of days, thanks to a group of her students practicing the routine for a the tik tok challenge. âI canât get that song out of my head.â Folasade explained, as she started humming the tune. âBefore I get carried away and break into that challenge routine, do you want to take a break?âÂ
âI couldnât care less what song it is my dear, as long as I win the goddamn competition,â for some reason Scarlett was determined to take part in an annual salsa dance competition and Folasade promised to prepare and mentor her. Scarlett grabbed a towel, wiping away a bead of sweat rolling down the back of her neck. âI have to admit, I prefer to get my cardio elsewhere,â Scar flashed Đ° grin at the other from across the room where she was standing in front of a mirror, striking poses and checking herself out. âAbsolutely adore the store you told me about, by the way. These workout clothes are very comfortable,â

âOh no, you try growing up with four siblings and then decide if you want to share.â Lizzie chuckled. Sheâd never been good at sharing even when she was a child and the luxury sheâd grown accustomed to in New York hadnât helped. She gave Scarâs hand a gentle squeeze back at her reaction before sitting forward again. She couldnât imagine what this news would be like and she hadnât wanted to just spring it on her like this. âWe are happy, or at least I am, you of course donât have to be. Carver he em, he doesnât know. Thatâs one of the reasons he stayed in New York or at least he was meant to stay there.â
âFair enough,â she murmured as she looked away, not asking any of the additional, prying questions she normally would. On most days, it was easy to brush off the mention of Lizzieâs siblings and fake a smile. Today she felt the corners of her lips trembling so she just moved on to the more important matter at hand. âCongratulations, my friend, for real. I wouldnât trade places with you but I suppose I am happy for you, too.â Scar grinned before her expression suddenly sobered. âYeah, fuck, Carter. Heâs the father?â She didnât know which would be the worst; if the man Lizzie was separated from was the father or not. âAre you going to tell him?â

âdid you know a whale sharkâs spot pattern is as unique as a fingerprint?â maggie asked the person nearest to her, blue eyes looking up from the journal in front of her on the bar countertop. she had a habit of bringing her work with her when she decided to stop in for a drink before heading home. and besides, she only had a page or so left to finish reading anyway. âsorry for sounding and looking like a big nerd, i canât help it. itâs part of my identity at this point.â
âHow in the world would I know, Maggie!â Scar gave out a hearty laugh, bringing a hand to her chest. âYou know Iâm only interested in those colorful tropical fish,â a beat. âGood to know a few secrets of the ocean, I suppose. They might come in handy if I ever want to impress your colleagues,â another laugh. âAh, tell me something I donât know, youâre the biggest, most adorable nerd I know. Always be proud of it,â she winked before grinning at the sight of her food arriving. âWhat are you reading anyway?â

her heels clicked on the pavement as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. azure gaze flitting to the other person made her crimson lips curl up into a smile. â would you like one? â she purred, gaze taking in her appearance before returning to her face once more. at least she could appreciate the beauty before her. â i ducked out for a smoke. thereâll be a big muscled wall chasing after me soon enough. a few stolen moments though, you know? â
Scarâs fingers curled around the railing as she leaned in and took a deep breath of the ocean air, her dress fluttering around her ankles. A pleasant evening at the docks it was, truly, but Scarlett was bored. Or rather, her mind kept looking for a distraction from her thoughts and memories reliving certain parts of her life. Her eyes wandered around in a search of something and sure enough, the universe delivered, sending her a salvation in the form of a dark-haired woman. âDonât mind if I do,â she smirked, pulling out a cigarette. âDo you have a light?â Scar tucked the cigarette between her lips, arching an eyebrow at the other. âTrust me, I do. What, oh what are we going to tell them when they find us, though?â

âWell then I think Iâd be best finding someone else donât you? I donât share very well.â Lizzie chuckled softly. She was touched by Scarlettâs reaction to perhaps finding someone else for mischief but it did make her feel a little guilty, pretty soon she wouldnât be able to get up to much. At Scarlettâs uncertainty her smile slipped and she nodded sitting back to smooth out her top with her free hand revealing a barely noticeable bump. â13 weeks.â
âSharing is caring but very well! To each their own,â Scar jested before leaning back against her seat and itâs a good thing she did so because Lizzieâs news threw her off, completely. Scar gave Lizzieâs hand a squeeze, but again, mostly for her own sake. Her eyes widened, falling to her stomach. Lord, she needed alcohol. If Lizzie had to eat for two, was Scar allowed to drink for two? âI-- Youâre growing a human! Congratulations? I mean-- Congratulations! No, wait. Are we happy about it?â Scarlett always had the weirdest reactions to pregnancy announcements, one might argue because of her own heartbreaking experience.

@scarredelweissâ
one glance up from the book he was reading and that was it. he was staring. there was no polite way to say it, but who could blame him? she looked exactly like scarlett did. sure, she looked a little different - a little sadder, but hadnât he grown into someone a lot more depressed in the interim? but there was doubt - heâd had these moments before - although, they were far away from here, in new york and seattle. this was⌠different, somehow. he just knew it was her. nicky felt like a stupid teenager again all of a sudden, standing up slowly and approaching as if she were a mirage that would disappear at any moment. an uncharacteristic amount of nerves sat in his stomach as he approached.Â
âscarlett?â he asks, his voice a lot quieter than heâd meant for it to be, his face hopeful but not yet convinced.Â
Only when Scarlett was certain the spotlight wasnât on her and the rest of the world wasnât watching-- either to judge her or admire her (it was always one or the other)-- did she allow for her facade to drop. Only under the warm sun was she able to relax, her toes curling in the soft sand, the light breeze combing through her thick chocolate locks, her freckles exposed for once, not covered with make up. The book in her hand was dull-- fucking princes and princesses. What happened to the stories about dragons? Their adventures and exciting love lives! However, always, at all times, without exception-- with a book in her hand, she felt good. Better, cozier. The familiar male voice reached her just in time for Scar to remember why she loved reading in the first place and she hummed in delight, firmly believing it was only her mind messing with her. Out of the corner of her mind, she noticed a figure approaching however, and heavens help her, sheâd recognize his walk anywhere, anytime. Her stomach tightened and the heart pounding in her chest reminded her it wasnât dead just yet. âNicklas,â she uttered and mesmerized by the gentle way his name left her lips she peered up at him, speechless. To hell with speaking, she didnât want to speak. Just gaze at him. Touch him. Feel him. However, she had to say something. â... Youâre standing in my sun.â Godammit, Scarlett. Out of all terrible things she couldâve said... Mrs. Edelweiss panicked and probably picked the absolute worst.
