Be Still My Beating Heart

“Your heart is beating too fast.”

You feel the bed shift as Xiao turns around to face you. “Nightmare?”

“No,” you whisper back, mirroring his position, one arm supporting your head. “No nightmare.”

“What are you thinking about?”

“That I can’t sleep.”

He nods. “I can see that.” Xiao watches you intently, as if trying to read your mind, your soul. To break through your nonchalant façade and solve your problems without your having to voice them aloud.

But alas, even for a yaksha, that is beyond his abilities.

“You’re overthinking again,” he says instead. Not a question. That he knows you well enough for.

You shake your head, placing it back on the pillow as you stare at the ceiling. “And you’re reading too much into this.”

Silence.

“What keeps you awake, though?” you ask, even though you already know the answer. It’s nighttime in Liyue. And thus, Xiao’s time to fulfill his duty as its protector.

“That I can’t sleep.”

The way he mirrors your words surprises you. His sense of humour is clearly evolving.

With a quiet smile, you turn your head back to him, lifting your hand to gently trace your fingers along his cheek. “Why are you still here though? Not that I’m complaining, quite the opposite. It’s nice to share a bed with you again.”

Xiao scoffs, a faint blush gracing his features as he glances towards the balcony, where the night stands in its moonless darkness. “You had a nightmare,” he states.

“I told you, I didn’t.”

He turns back, and your eyes lock, making you swallow as you suddenly feel very transparent under his gaze.

“You can’t lie to an adeptus. Especially not to me.”

You trace your finger along the skin just below his eye, and you practically can feel his breath halt. “No… I truly can’t, can I?”

Now there’s an almost soft, caring look that has taken hold of his features. Your eyes flutter just before you feel your lips brushing against his. Xiao follows immediately. His hand searches for yours as he shifts closer on the bed. You feel him inhale deeply, like he’s savouring your touch, your taste, your very being.

“Now, your heart is beating too fast,” you tease against his lips.

His grip on your hand tightens a tad. “You’re imagining things.”
