Excerpts from The Player’s Lounge, Episode 4 (Feb 17, 2023)

Trevor Zegras and John Gibson were interviewed for the episode.

On Trevor’s hat (a 2001 MLB World Series Arizona Diamondbacks vs New York Yankees hat):

Host: You didn’t realize that your hat, the Yankees lost. I’m just still shocked from that.

Trevor: no, I knew, I knew

Host: no, you thought it was the Astros.

Trevor: Well I thought the Diamondbacks became the Astros

Host: That makes it worse

[all laugh]

Trevor: I’m a Yankees fan

Host: Well, did you know they lost?

Trevor: I did know the Yankees lost.

Host: so why are you wearing the hat?

Trevor: Because it says 2001 […] and I think it looks cool.

Host: I like the hat. […]

Trevor: Jimmy said it’s his favorite hat, so, that’s why I wear it.

Host: Oh, so it’s his hat?

Trevor: No, it’s his favorite hat

Host: Oh, I thought you took it.

Trevor: No, no, no, he just thinks it’s…[noticeable pause]…it’s his favorite hat. I dunno why, but that’s why I wear it.

On Jamie playing guitar:

Gibby: I’ve heard about [the guitar], I haven’t heard him play.

Trevor: He plays it 24/7.

Host: Does he? He says he goes up on the top of your roof.

Trevor: Yeah, we went up there the other night.

Host: Is it like sunsets with Jimmy? Is that what we’re doing?

Trevor: Sunsets with Jimmy, yeah, he’s always practicing. We got this little sofa that sits in front of our couch. He leaves his guitar there with his three sheets of paper to his one song, In Case You Didn’t Know by Brett Young. If you didn’t tell me what the song was I’d have no idea. Cause he only strums it like once, then he’ll wait five minutes and then he’ll strum it again. And I’m like dude is that how it’s supposed to sound? And he’s like no no no you gotta strum it like four or five times but I’m just trying to get it down. I’m like oh my—. So maybe in like two years he’ll get like two or three strums and then maybe we’ll hear the song.

Host: When you come back from the road, does he like say hey, listen.

Trevor: Yeah, he loves it, he plays it all the time.

Host: Does he sing too, or no?

Trevor: No. Uhhh…? No.

Gibby: I would love to hear him sing.

Trevor: I wouldn’t let him sing. I wouldn’t let him sing in the house, nah, I wouldn’t let him sing in the house.

Host: So when he comes back are you going to make him play for you guys?

Trevor: He’s terrible right now, he’s so bad. But he, like, loves it, so you kind of, like, root for him a little bit. But we’re calling him Luke Combs, that’s his new nickname. Cause he’s been on the IR this year, so he’s getting a little chubby.

[all laugh]

Trevor: He’s getting a little chubby.

Gibby: It’s bulking season for Jimmy for sure.

Trevor: Yeah, he’s bulking, he’s bulking right now.

Host: Well Jamie’s cooking too, right? […?…] He’s grilling, is that what’s happening?

Trevor: He’s cooking. He’s cooking, he’s grilling, he’s bulking, he’s playing guitar, he’s living—

Host: He says he’s sleeping a lot, so he’s napping, and he’s just like—

Trevor: He’s napping, he’s eating, sleeping, I mean he’s Luke Combs, dude.

On why Mason wasn’t there:

Gibby: Mac said he thought he has a cavity, and then he thought he might have to get his wisdom teeth out, and I was like those are two pretty different things.

Trevor: But he got cleared for the wisdom teeth last night, he got checked, you’re good, so.

Gibby: Yeah. So he said he had to go get his cavity filled at the dentist…it is what it is, what’s [but?] going on with the youth, kind of the new trend I guess you could say, make excuses. Nah, but it’s good. It’s definitely different, kind of see how everything’s changed since…when I came it was all veteran guys, I was one of the younger guys for quite a while, just kind of the way the game’s evolving and kind of the direction with the younger generation and the way the world we live in now—

Trevor: The Gen Z mix culture.

Gibby: Trying to find the right words for it.

Trevor: A lot of people in the locker room see the world a lot different these days, that’s for sure.

Host: Yeah, I can only imagine.

On “Jimmy becoming more Jimmy-like”:

Host: He’s a pretty quiet guy…seems like he’s coming out of his shell

Trevor: He’s the quietest guy ever. Like, when we, because obviously we live together, and we’ll drive to the rink, and in the morning, and if you don’t speak to him he won’t speak to you. I gotta be like, Jimmy, are you alright buddy! good morning, or he won’t say anything to you. He will just sit there. He will look at the road until we get there and until somebody talks to him, […?…] Ahh, Jimmy comes out…awesome, but yeah, he’s quiet.

After the host suggesting the Drysdales were worried about Trevor’s influence on Jamie:

Trevor: We’re literally polar opposite people, which is why I think is why it’s so great living with him. [no comment on the actual question]

On DJing at Dux in Tux:

Host: Lotta Taylor Swift.

Trevor: A little Taylor Swift.

Trevor on what his podcast would be:

“I don’t think I could do it by myself, I think I need someone to bounce stuff off. But it is fun, just talking, ranting.

On Trevor’s ideal golf foursome (what do they call them? quads?):

Adam Henrique, Michael Jordan, and Taylor Swift “if she could play golf.”

Host: She could drive the cart.

Eventually he decided on Justin Timberlake as his fourth.

Some additional notes:

They bring up the fact that Z’s talkative. According to Gibby it’s “a sensitive subject…I think that it just kind of goes back to the new generation, not that it’s a bad thing, it’s just different now.”

Trevor keeps the standings/season record in the back of his head. He tries not to think about that kind of thing, tries to focus on his own skills, etc.

Mason at Dux in Tux: Gibby thinks the answers he prepared “weren’t suitable for that event so he was probably panicking in his head…just kept it generic.” Mason had the “worst speech” Trevor has ever heard, and apparently talked about “boulevards” and “taking girls into ice cream shops.” Gibby concludes Mason “needs dating advice for sure.”

Trevor says you gotta be “proper” all the time in hockey interviews

Strome and Vatrano are going to have their own podcast. Apparently they get along very well (”two peas in a pod” -Gibby), share a sarcastic sense of humor, and their jokes “feed off each other.”

The podcast host didn’t know who Wiz Khalifa was???

Just wanted to let you know that your art piece of Trevor Zegras as a little dog and Jamie Drysdale as a big bunny is one of my favorite pieces of hockey art. You really captured their personalities in animal form and it's just so delightful to look at!
