The Art of Mehndi: Henna Tattoos

Mehndi is an ancient art form of adorning the body with a paste made from leaves of the henna plant. Henna tattoos are temporary and last between one and four weeks, depending on your skin and the quality of the henna. Designs vary from organic or floral forms to bold geometrical patterns. Natural henna tattoos are painless and safe because they are made of 100% all natural ingredients. Unlike the artificial henna tattoos you may have seen at tourist locations that contain black ink, the henna paste mixed for this class contains only the leaves of the natural henna plant, which is non-irritating to the skin. This course will cover the history and traditional uses of the henna plant as well as techniques for mixing and applying henna. Student takeaways will include a list of henna suppliers, a recipe and a list of tools/materials for mixing and applying henna paste, and a temporary tattoo that will last from one to four weeks. Students will have the opportunity to receive a tattoo from the teacher, and extremely brave students may wish to try their own hand at painting with the available henna paste.
