Best Portable Table Saw of 2020 (Top Picks and Reviews)
11 Best Portable Table Saw Reviews of 2020 [Read Before Buying]
Portable table saws come in many shapes and sizes. Your choice of saw should depend on your current needs and the scope of projects you plan on taking on in the future. The main considerations include the type of the saw, power, mobility, build quality, cutting depth, rip capacity, and safety features.
In this article, we’ll review some of the best portable table saws out there, take a closer look at what to consider when buying a portable table saw, and answer some frequently asked questions.
Buyer’s Guide
Related: best table saws (overall)
Type of the Saw
There are three main subtypes of portable table saws. Starting from the smallest, there are benchtop, compact, and jobsite models.
Benchtop models are the smallest and tend to be the most affordable of the bunch. They have weaker motors and lower cutting power. Their tables are also considerably smaller.
Compact models represent the intermediate solution. They are still more affordable than the standard jobsite models but are not that far away performance-wise. Some bigger and better models are roughly comparable to the jobsite class.
Finally, jobsite class models are made for use on construction sites. They’re the biggest and most rugged of the bunch. They also tend to be the most expensive and most powerful. Since they’re intended for use on construction sites, they also routinely have advanced safety and mobility features.
Power
The more powerful a portable saw is, the heavier it will be. So, if you’ll mostly be working at a single place, go for a bigger and stronger model. However, if you need portability, go for a less powerful model.
Jobsite class models with built-in stands can offer both high mobility and abundant power. This is especially true for models that have easily foldable stands with attached wheels.
Features
The best portable table saw is ruggedly built and resilient, with high-quality parts.
Always inspect the quality of the blade, how deep it cuts, how far you can tilt it, and what kind of protection it offers. Every decent table saw should feature a reliable and precise miter gauge.
No-load speed doesn’t actually mean all that much in a practical situation, but more power allows the saw to deal with tougher materials.
The table is another hugely important feature to consider. It should be extendable and you should pick the size according to the size of the projects you plan on doing.
Safety
Portable table saws and table saws in general are potentially very dangerous power tools, with thousands of accidents happening each year. [1]
Look for a proper blade guard system, as the largest percentage of injuries involves fingers and hands. Your saw should also have an anti-kickback system. Some models have electronic detectors that can stop the blade when it touches your finger.
You should also invest in protective gear. Most importantly, buy earplugs. Portable table saws often produce more than 90 decibels of noise and can damage your hearing. [2] You should also consider buying protective eyewear, gloves, and a breathing mask. Make sure to always follow the OSHA guidelines for woodworking tools. [3]
The NIOSH recommended exposure limit is 85dB for occupational noise.

FAQs
1. Are portable table saws accurate?
In general, portable table saws tend to be slightly less precise than their stationary counterparts. They are considerably smaller and lighter, thus more prone to damage and inaccuracy. However, modern-day portable table saws feature pretty impressive accuracy. Some can even challenge the stationary models.
Jobsite models, thanks to their size and rugged build, tend to be the most precise of all portable table saws. Some expensive models even have laser tracking and on-board displays that show you exactly where the blade will cut.
However, a standard jobsite table saw is exposed to rough working conditions more than its smaller compact and bench top class counterparts. Therefore, it is at a higher risk of getting damaged and losing accuracy.
2. What is a table saw rip capacity?
The rip capacity of a table saw is the maximum width of a piece of wood it can rip, rip being the cut made along the grain of the workpiece. It is determined by the maximum distance between the saw’s blade on one side and the extendable table’s fence on the other side.
Portable table saws tend to have considerably smaller rip capacities than their stationary counterparts. Due to their smaller size, they also tend to have smaller tables that can offer shorter extensions.
In the jobsite class, 20” to 25” is the average capacity, though there are models that can deliver over 30”. Compact and benchtop class models tend to have even smaller cutting tables and smaller rip capacities.
3. What is a table saw arbor?
A table saw arbor is a shaft on which the blade of the saw is installed. It is primarily used to raise the blade for cutting and lower it after it is done. The arbor can also hold additional dado blades.
All US table saws with 10” blades have arbors that measure 5/8” in diameter. Table saws with bigger blades can have thicker arbors that can withstand more massive bearings. However, they’re turned back down to the standard size for convenience.

All in all, the choice of the best portable table saw depends on your needs and the type of projects you want to undertake. Here is a brief summary of the models reviewed in this article:

Best Hybrid Table Saws of 2020 (Top Picks + Reviews)
We Reviewed the 8 Best Hybrid Table Saws of 2020 and Here’s What We Found
Hybrid table saws fill a rather big gap between portable jobsite saws on the one side and full-sized cabinet maker models on the other. Due to the nature of the hybrid class, they come in many different shapes and sizes and oftentimes it isn’t easy to pick the right one.
In this article, you’ll find the best hybrid table saw reviews along with an in-depth buyer’s guide. A brief FAQ section is also included.
How to choose a hybrid table saw that fits your needs
Consider the following (best table saws here)
Build Quality
Since you’ll most likely be taking on larger projects and bigger pieces of wood, it is essential to have a sturdy, well-built table saw. Inspect the motor, cabinet (if there is one), arbor, blade, and the working table.
The major parts must not feel flimsy or loose. They should be tight but still work smoothly. Also, avoid hybrid table saws with plastic parts. Durable plastic might work for small and cheap benchtop table saws, but they have no place on a hybrid table saw.
Power
Hybrid table saws usually feature motors ranging from 1.75HP to 3HP. On the lower end, there are models with 1.5HP motors, though some models on the other end of the spectrum can have 4HP and even 5HP motors.
Motors with fewer HP are more likely to be pre-wired to work at 110-120V, which makes them more suitable for home workshops and DIY-ers. Models in the 1.75-3HP range are often able to work in both 110V and 220V modes, though they are pre-wired for one of them.
Models with 4HP and 5HP motors are routinely made to work at 220 volts. They are made for professional settings and are not recommended for garage workshops.
Cutting Depth and Accuracy
When buying a hybrid table saw, you should also consider cutting depth and accuracy.
In the hybrid class, 10” blades are a standard. Most models have a maximum cutting depth at 90 degrees ranging from 3” to 3-1/2”. The maximum cutting depth at 45 degrees varies from 2-1/4” to 2-1/2”.
When it comes to accuracy, all hybrid table saws are equipped with miter gauges. Some expensive models also use lasers to track and control cutting precision.
Safety
Make sure that the saw you decide on has at least a proper blade guard and anti-kickback pawls. If these two are included, there is a high chance that you will also get a push stick. It is also good to have a quality riving knife.
Some high-end models also have flesh sensors. A flesh sensor monitors the blade, and as soon as it registers that your hand has made contact with the blade, it stops the blade, retracts it below the table, and shuts the motor down. This feature was introduced to decrease the number of serious injuries caused by table saws. According to the Consumer Safety Product Commission (CPSC), 33,400 table saw injuries happened in 2015 alone. [1]
Since table saws can be very noisy, it is recommended to wear ear protection. [2] It is also advisable to wear eye protection and a breathing mask to prevent sawdust from flying into your eyes and to make sure you don’t breathe it in. [3]
The main advantage of hybrid table saws over traditional contractor saws is superior dust collection. On the other hand, they’re stronger than jobsite saws.

FAQs
1. What’s a hybrid table saw?
A hybrid table saw is a cross between the cabinet maker and contractor or “jobsite” table saw concepts.
Hybrid table saws are stationary models, as opposed to the portable jobsite models. This means that hybrid table saws tend to be stronger and have more horsepower. Also, it is not uncommon for them to have a greater rip capacity than a contractor/jobsite model.
When compared to the cabinet maker variety, hybrid table saws are a bit smaller and have less power. Cabinet maker models routinely work at 220-240V, while only the biggest hybrid models come pre-wired for 220 volts.
2. What does a riving knife do?
A riving knife is an important part of a table saw’s safety equipment. It is a flat metal piece located just behind the blade. Its main role is to prevent kickback, and it is especially important when you’re performing rip cuts.
When you push a piece of wood through your saw’s blade, the riving knife prevents the pieces from coming back together and causing kickback. Have in mind that stronger saws have stronger kickback.
On the majority of models, the riving knife is mounted on the trunnion, the same mechanism that lowers and lifts the blade. Many riving knives have release systems that allow the user to set them both lower and higher than the blade itself.
3. What are anti-kickback pawls?
Anti-kickback pawls are the latches that prevent the wood from moving. They are, as their name suggests, used to reduce the occurrence of kickback in table saws.
Anti-kickback pawls are usually installed in pairs behind the blade. They go over the wood with their pointy teeth and are designed only to allow forward motion. You can’t pull the wood back once the pawls have grabbed it. That’s why you can only use them for through cuts.
You should take the pawls off if you’re performing partial cuts, as they won’t let you pull the wood out. Also, if you’re using dado blades, you should remove them.
Verdict
Hybrid table saws sit between jobsite and cabinet maker models, and there’s a huge variety of models available. The decision which one is the best depends on your needs and preferences.
Here is a quick summary of all reviewed models:
Grizzly G0690 – Best for professionals
SawStop CNS175-TGP36 – Best for those who value safety above all

Best Table Saw Reviews 2020
The 12 Best Table Saws of 2020 (Reviews, Top Picks and Ratings)
With the competition being as tough as it is on the table saw market, it might be very hard to decide which saw is right for you. Available models range from tiny 4” saws to full-sized stationary beasts made for harder tasks. When shopping for a table saw, you should take the motor type, blade and its cutting depth, rip capacity, and safety features into consideration. Also, look for the inclusion of a miter gauge.
In this article, we’ll explain how to pick the table saw that suits your needs. We will then take a look at the best table saws in our table saw reviews section before answering some frequent questions about table saws.
How to buy the right table saw
First things first, get your buying criteria right..
What type of Saw do you need?
Table saws are available in two basic forms – stationary and portable. Cabinet saws are the largest among stationary models. They also tend to be the most powerful and expensive. Contractor models, on the other end of the spectrum, are a little lighter. Hybrid models offer a compromise between contractor and cabinet saws.
In the portable table saws league, benchtop models are the smallest. Portable saws don’t feature support stands. Compact models are a step above them, being similar to contractor models, only with smaller tables. Jobsite table saws are the biggest option. They are significantly more rugged and powerful than compact and benchtop models and are intended for construction site use. Many have cast iron frames.
Motor Type
There are two main motor types – belt drive and direct drive.
Belt drive motors are more dominant in the stationary class. They offer more power and torque than direct-drive motors. In models with belt-drive system, the motor is frequently removed from the blade and thus less exposed to dust. They’re also more durable.
Direct drive motors are more affordable and are thus found in cheaper models. On the positive side, they’re low-maintenance, smaller, and lighter. On the flipside, they offer less power and are a bit noisy.
Important Features
Like with all power tools, there’s a list of key features to consider with table saws.
First, you should consider the size and the quality of the blade. 10” blades are a standard today. They usually come with 24 to 40 teeth, often made of carbide. Standard cutting depth at a 90-degree angle should range between 3” and 3.5”. If you need bigger, some models also have 12” blades.
Rip capacity largely determines the size of the pieces you can work with. If you intend to work at a job site, look for models with more than 24” of rip capacity. For smaller home projects, you can go with a more compact table. You should also consider the quality and reliability of the rip fence.
It is essential for a table saw to have a miter gauge. That way, you can precisely measure the angle at which you’re cutting. The gauge needs to be adjustable if you plan on making compound cuts. Some models also have lockable gauges.
Safety
Table saws are known as potentially very dangerous tools. [1] Therefore, you should pay extra attention to the safety options your future table saw offers. [2] Here are some to look for:
Riving knife. This is essentially an upgraded splitter that sits at the same height as the blade. It can replace the old-fashioned guard and can travel up and down, along with the workpiece.
Anti-kickback pawls. These are used to minimize the kickback. You can find them on either side of your saw’s splitter and catch the stray material.
SawStop. Some high-end models also have electronic sensors that can stop the blade and retract it once they detect your hand has touched the blade. [3]
More than 30,000 injuries are caused by table saws each year. Hands and fingers are most often injured.

If you’re looking for a model with worm drive, you should definitely take a look at the SkilSaw SPT70WT. This jobsite table saw comes with brass gears – in fact, it was the first model with this feature when it launched several years ago.
Having gears instead of belts reduces the number of parts that can get stuck and malfunction. However, there’s a bit less torque and the engine’s more exposed to dust. The main safety features include a clear blade guard and a riving knife.
The motor inside the housing is SkilSaw’s own Dual-Field unit that works at 15 amps. It is exceptionally good at keeping cool, so you won’t need to take frequent breaks during your projects. The engine is a smooth-start unit and it works at 220 volts.
Like many other jobsite table saws, this one has a 10” blade with carbide tips. The maximum cutting depth is 3.5” at a 90-degree angle. The miter gauge goes to 46 degrees. In terms of rip capacity, the table offers you 25” of space.
The SPT70WT is equipped with a sturdy metal chassis with rubber-coated bumpers and angles. It weighs just below 50lbs and is very easy to transport. Also, it is easy to set up.

FAQs
1. Will an 8” dado blade work on a 10” table saw?
Yes, you can use an 8” dado blade on your 10” table saw. The sizes don’t have to match and you can always go for a smaller dado.
But you wouldn’t want to go the other way around and use a dado blade that has a bigger diameter than your saw’s primary blade. This might cause all sorts of problems, the biggest of which is the clearance.
Also, the bigger the blade, the faster the tips get, and the difference in speed might get you in trouble.
2. Is a miter saw better than a table saw?
It all depends on your needs and what you are looking for.
For example, if you’d like to do bigger projects and cut bigger pieces, then go for a table model. Otherwise, a miter saw might be your best bet. Also, table models are much better when it comes to rip cuts.
Other advantages of table models include versatility, abundance of power, and the ability to work with sheet materials. They’re also more dangerous and need much more space.
Miter saws can work with miter cuts and angled cuts, and are also great for bevel cuts. Also, they’re far safer than their table counterparts. On the downside, you can’t cut large workpieces on them or do rip cuts.
3. Can you put a 12” blade on a 10” table saw?
The short answer is no. You shouldn’t try to fit anything on a table saw that’s larger than the equipment it’s built for. It’s unsafe, you might damage or even ruin the motor completely, and you may actually get less cutting power.
