immortal souls || @thoughtfulmachinery || location: university library
Reaching for the copy of Phaedo, a sort of joyless grin took over his features as he gently pulled the worn and tattered book from its place on the shelf. He’d been to six different used book stores around the city and had finally tracked down a first edition here of all places. “Thank you madame, I think I’ve got it from here...last I checked, the Dewey Decimal system hasn’t changed since 1876,” he said, sensing the presence of the librarian who had been hovering over him since he’d stepped into the place when the doors had opened earlier that morning. It wasn’t until his gaze pulled up from the pages of the book seconds later he realized he had been mistaken. The much younger woman possessing the space near where he was standing indeed was not the librarian.

— isla & owen
“Maybe I was, but I’m wondering what question you think it is that I’m dying to ask,” he returned with a small grin. Owen’s gaze moved over the brunette’s face, then in a break and pause he turned his attention to the coffee in front of him. The publisher quickly finished the remains and removed himself from his seat, fishing out cash for a tip to leave on the table. “Why don’t we take a walk? There’s a great bookstore a couple blocks away.”
Isla’s glance reluctantly panned from the face of the handsome male to the money he’d just left for one of her waitresses in the upscale restaurant. An eyebrow quirked at his offer as she returned her attention back to him. “Well, I’m going to venture a guess here and say that I was correct in my assumption. You don’t remember me at all do you? I have a feeling if you did, you wouldn’t be asking me to join you, at least that’s what I gathered from the way our last meeting ended. A year ago at Smith & Porter? Ring any bells?”

thoughtfulmachinery:
“As the man who brought up dick to begin with, how do you feel about that?” Matt inquired, tone full of humor and his signing turning to lewd gestures just to get a rise out of the blond beside him. “Yea, Rome has nothing on Minneapolis, dude. As if you couldn’t already tell,” he chuckled, gesturing to the pole working midgets whom may have been done on stage but were now on the floor. The art historian leaned in a bit closer to speak into Gabriel’s good ear, “when in Rome right?” His head then nodded at the bill he attempted to slyly slip to the stripper shaking her ass in his face. Leaning back into his seat, he added, “See you’re just like the rest of us men. Don’t be acting like Geneva’s made you all high and mighty and above the primal nature within us all.” Seriously, what man didn’t love a great pair of tits and a firm ass in their face. Hopefully accompanied by a beautiful face and a killer personality, and while all this was strictly for amusement, Matteus truly wanted a woman he focus all his time and attention on. In the meantime, it was nice to sit back and watch the female form in teasing movements. “Not on my lap either, brother. I just like viewing,” he said unashamed with a shrug of his thick shoulders. “These girls aren’t like porn stars who get checked regularly for STDs and shit,” he pointed out, nearly wincing in displeasure in seeing where the dancer had stuffed the bill Gabriel had slipped to her.
With the bourbon in front of him, Matt grabbed the tumbler and had a drink, chuckling a bit into glass of dark honey hued liquid. “Ah, come on, I deserve a break,” he joked. The news that came out of his friend’s mouth made him both happy and apprehensive, some worry and anxiety settling in if Gabriel moved away permanently. Sure, Matteus had friends but Gabriel was someone he considered himself closest too and knew he’d feel really alone if he left for good. “I guess that’s good news. You better invite me over sometime soon or I’ll just show up and make an awkward moment between you and whatever woman you’re fucking.” He laughed, knowing he was likely to get a rise out of Gabe with that tease and threat, but more importantly, he’d get some kind of answer on what he was curious about. “What’s keeping me busy? I have a few needy clients, an old Sharon Stone type of broad —- like in the movie Basic Instinct —- that I think is just wasting her money because she’s trying to bed me. But, I’m also teaching a couple classes on art history at the university.” Then a smile curved his lips and he set his glass down on the table top. “I met a gorgeous woman recently. I’m hoping that goes somewhere, anywhere.”
“Eh, debatable, but I don’t mind running with that story. Afterall, what type of broship would this be without some flexibility. Also, efforts to get me laid are almost always appreciated,” he commented, lowering his voice as several midget strippers passed by. “You know what, Rome has nothing on Minneapolis and I have to wonder if the rest of the world knows what they're missing out on,” he joked, letting out a chuckle as he shook his head. “If anything Geneva’s helped me loosen up a bit. Must be that crisp alpine air and clear blue skies and absolutely nothing to do with legalized recreational marijuana use,” he deadpanned. Matt would know that Gabriel was joking; although he wasn’t a prude by any means, he never touched the stuff, only drinking socially. Losing control of his faculties on any level had never been the surgeon’s idea of fun time. “I’m not on Porn Star etiquette, but please....continue. At least one of us is well versed in these things, never know when this information will come in handy,” he said, realizing he might have been exceptionally loud as he looked around the place, though he wouldn’t have guessed anyone there in the strip club would have been shocked or bothered by their conversation thus far.
Gabriel winced, taking a pull of the bourbon. “I mean, you could always come out there, plant some roots. From what I’ve heard from you so far, doesn’t sound like you have anything holding back. Unless, things are more serious than you’re letting on about this gorgeous lady you’ve met.” Gabriel paused to reflect on the last time he’d actually heard Matt bring up a woman and his memory fell short. “Sharon Stone is hot though...maybe my ass his getting old, but I wouldn’t exactly classify her as an old broad, distinguished maybe? Is that you way of saying you’re not interested in what she’s offering up? Anyway, what kind of project are we talking?” Gabriel wasn’t an art or history enthusiasts for the most part, but the polymath in him wouldn’t let an opportunity to delve into his friends passion escape. “So, what about this mystery lady of yours. When I do I get to meet her? Tell me something interesting about her, what’s she like?” If nothing else Gabe could live vicariously through his friends love life for a bit, given the stagnate nature of his own, although there had been a bit of a plot twist recently. There were some interesting possibilities developing, Gabriel still unsure of what to make of the vibe he hadn’t been able to shake since he’d made somewhat of a connection with his neighbor of all people.

thoughtfulmachinery:
Starter: For Charlaine from Cash. @thoughtfulmachinery
A small smile on her painted red lips created a contrast with the tiredness in her eyes and the feeling of defeat that rested on her features. “Of course I did. Don’t you feel like getting away from the madness and chaos sometimes? I get there’s a certain level of excitement and adrenaline, and how easy it is to miss the constant movement of things, but I feel like I need a recoup.” The blonde finally looked up at the male fully, and reached out for his hand. “Get away with me for a long weekend?”
“Darlin, I’m always up for a get away but whether or not it’s the best time to to slip away may be another story altogether. Not to mention a get away is meaning something more permanent for me these days.” His desire to effect some change while in office had long ago diminished along with his will to keep up with the game and tempo of politics in general, amidst rampant corruption and greed. Getting up from where he was seated, he moved to close the space between them, sitting on the edge of his desk. Noticing the tired lines etched in her features, he sighed, takin her hand in his own, fingertips tracing the lines of her palm. “We’ll figure somethin out....what time frame are we talkin? Is there anywhere in particular you’d like to go?”

thoughtfulmachinery:
Starter: For Eden from Will @thoughtfulmachinery
“I don’t believe that’s entirely true,” she stated, gaze reaching up to meet his own. “The past has lessons to offer, good and bad things, mistakes, to learn from. And we do have a lot of good history in there too, don’t we?” The already soft woman softened even more, a little more emotion wading into hopeful question extended. “What do you want for the future, Will?”
“At least it sounds as if you maintain some degree of optimism where our past is concerned, despite our scarred reality.” He nodded earnestly, contemplating his response for a long moment before verbalizing his thoughts. “That is the one truth in all of this that won’t change. Not enough for you to stay, though, isn’t that so?” Getting up from his seat, he moved over near where she was standing, leaned a shoulder against the wall, a rueful sigh filling the small space between them. “For love to be enough?”
