The Opioid Crisis
The Opioid Crisis has been a huge topic of discussion for the past couple of years. It has been news headlines, article topics, and it has now spread to classroom discussions for young teens and young adults. This is because opioids have had an impact on the United States population. To be specific, prescription opioids have heavily increased the number of deaths for the past couple centuries. These small pills that look harmless have taken the lives of many young adults and has affected the lives of the addicts’ families and friends. Not only is it effecting our community, but its economy as well. In this blog post, I’ll be informing you on the original use of opioids, the misuse of these opioids, and the effects the drug abuse has had on people since the 90’s.
Let’s first gain an understanding of what an opioid is and what drugs classify as opioids. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), opioids are “a class of drugs naturally found in the opium poppy plant. Some prescription opioids are made from the plant directly, and others are made by scientists in labs using the same chemical structure.” Some common prescription opioids are oxycodone, morphine, codeine, heroin, and fentanyl. When used medically, the prescription drug is commonly used for relieving severe pain. When used for non-medical reasons, it is used for relaxation. This non-medical use of opioids is done by taking other people’s prescribed medication. Some individuals that are prescribed the medication take more than they’re prescribed daily. The constant use of these opioids leads to addiction, a disease that kills.
Fentanyl is seen as the most dangerous opioid out of all the opioids. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine, but much more powerful. Fentanyl is more powerful than heroin. It can cause a lot of damage to the human body within small doses because of how powerful it is compared to the rest of the opioids. According to the American Addiction Centers, “Fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin and be lethal in very small doses, as little as 0.25 milligrams, CNN warns.” This synthetic opioid has also caused a large amount of deaths within the recent years. In a study of National Drug Overdose Deaths between 1997 and 2017, it states that “among the more than 70,200 drug overdose deaths estimated in 2017, the sharpest increase occurred among deaths related to fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (other synthetic narcotics) with more than 28,400 overdose deaths.” This goes to show how dangerous fentanyl and many other opioids are.
The opioid crisis has influenced the general public and the economy as well. The National Institute of Drug Abuse has stated that misusing opioids “is a serious national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare.” Within the past few years, the number of deaths from opioids have ridiculously increased. The most common opioids being fentanyl and heroin. The NIDA has also informed us that “In 2017, more than 47,000 Americans died as a result of an opioid overdose, including prescription opioids, heroin, and illicitly manufactured fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid.” This wide-spreading disease is affecting people’s health. According to the NIDA, there has been a “rising incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome due to opioid use and misuse during pregnancy. The increase in injection drug use has also contributed to the spread of infectious diseases including HIV and hepatitis C.” Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (also known as NAS) is when a baby is introduced to drugs before birth and has to withdraw from them if possible. The use of injected drugs can also lead to the baby growing up and becoming an addict because they’re more accessible to it because of their parent(s). Knowing that this is also causing a faster spread of infectious diseases, you can make the assumption that more people are at risk of getting HIV and/or hepatitis C if they use drugs through injections.
This dangerous and publicly known disease is spreading through our population, causing the deaths of many people. Pregnant mothers are engaging in the misuse of prescription opioids and putting their children at risk of addiction. People have begun to take action and reverse the drug overdose crisis. Organizations have been created to identify the threats and signs of drug overdose. There are also organizations that aim to make everyone aware of the dangers of drug overdose. From TV Commercials to billboards, there are many ways drug overdose prevention is being advertised to the world. There are petitions and a countless number of articles published to spread awareness of this crisis that’s affecting the lives of thousands of people. The community is doing all that it can to prevent further destruction within the United States population. Will you do the same?
