Why are you so obsessed with shipping adults with minors? Do you need therapy?

I do ship them! Only farther down the road, when they're both well into adulthood.

First, I like Cassandra and Varian's friendship overall for how they connect over common experiences: they gave their all to impress stoic fathers, they wanted to prove to everyone else that they can rise to the occasion if they were given the chance, they've both gone through dark times in their lives and made really bad choices, and live with the guilt of these choices. They understand each other on a level that their other friends probably can't. And I think people in general take solace in knowing that they can talk to someone else about deeply personal matters/issues without having to fear judgement.

Now, there's the matter of their age difference and that they first become friends when Varian is still a minor that can put people off (understandably). I would like to clarify that I don't see anything romantic between them during the course of the series, or even some time beyond the finale. They have an established friendship from the series' duration that could become an even closer friendship, which is what I like first and foremost. And then, only after some distance and more growth in their characters, I can see their friendship slowly turn into something else when they're older.

These are all points explained at length by other careful Cassarian shippers, but I thought I'd try to reiterate them a little here. Thanks for asking/reading, Anon!

So, from a logical point of view, I just want to add my two cents to this debate. It Gets a LOT of flack and hostility that I don’t think is always entirely fair. It can be a cute ship when addressed properly.

I’m gonna be salty for a second, cause the fandom standards for shipping Varian are ridiculous. Like, there’s almost this mindset that he is perpetually his during canon age (which btw the only official age we got for him is extended universe which generally is only given pseudo canon status by the fandom at large, but this is somehow word of god?  Regardless that isn’t super relevant to my point), and is therefore un-shippable.  (But oh it’s okay to ship him and Hugo cause they meet in a canon where Varian is already an adult, the double freaking standard?  Like OHHHH so he can age and be shipped but only under approved circumstances.)  Like for example since this is a Varipunzel blog, Var and Raps’ age gap is less than hers and Eugene’s and the same as the age gap between Raps and Cass.

And then people make the argument that oh he knew the others when he was still a minor so the dynamic must inherently have a power imbalance?!  Like no, the circumstances, timing and development of the ship are very important when it comes to whether it is healthy.

But that leads into another thing.  Ships don’t have to be healthy to be interesting and fun to explore.  WHAT YOU LIKE IN FICTION DOES NOT REFLECT REALITY.  Lets not get into how much whump there is of Varian as a minor that is treated as completely okay cause, YES, THIS IS FICTION.

I'm mainly a Varipunzel girly.

Never really got into other Varian ships, though, some crossover ships have cute fanart. And as long as Hugo stays FAR away, I don't really mind most Varian ships out there.

I don’t know why it’s so common for people to say that queer/trans characters are a political statement, that the writers are ‘going woke’, people being themselves and existing as themselves is not political. I’ve also seen this with real people, not just characters. People’s existence isn’t a grab for attention. Not everything has to have some secret ulterior motive. Just let people be themselves.

Varian is canonly bisexual and several staff members confirmed that Cassandra is lesbian. She is literally gay coded by design.

Aging them up doesn't change the fact that you saw a child and an adult and your first thought was "They should kiss", that's so sick.

I remember when shipping used to be fun. I'd see two characters in whatever piece of media I liked and just invent stories for them, flesh out the world, come up with new concepts. I was happy and I was content. I could never imagine that people existed who would all but put me on trial for pairing up fictional people. And I am just so exhausted from the mental strain caused by it, so sick of that part of me that wants desparately to please people at the cost of my own comfort.

Nothing is ever good enough. Nothing is ever pure enough. Cassarian is wrong despite the fact that I only ship them when they are adults (and do not support doing so otherwise), Hansanna is wrong even though I adore the idea of him realizing that what he did was not right and working to change himself, PhillipCamila is wrong regardless of me loving the idea of him being a good father to Luz and doting on his wife, SolarTwi is wrong even if the thought of a noble king and his queen sharing affectionate nuzzles warms my heart, the list goes on.

Dragging the weight of others' expectations around is too much.

I want to feel safe again.

I want to feel loved again.

I want to feel welcome again.

I don’t mean to be rude but you do know that Varian and Cassandra as a ship is inappropriate right? He’s a minor and she’s an adult in her early twenties. I’ve seen worse ships out there (Cedfia in the Sofia the First fandom with an adult and a child) but just letting you know.

While I understand your concern at first glance, I’d like to peacably inform you that any Cassarian shipper worth their salt ships them together in either a) a futuristic setting when Varian has naturally grown up into an adult with the normal passage of time and as such they are both consenting adults that can do as they please or b) in an AU where they are the same age, either both minors or both adults.

It’s really quite a lovely ship if you give it a chance.

But even if you just can’t see it ever being your cup of tea, please note that no one in the Cassarian fandom condones relations between them whilst he is a minor and she an adult or relationships between minors and adults in general. At the absolute most, people may ship him at the same age as many of Disney’s other young romantic leads.
