True Grit
(Image from The Samford Crimson.)
Hailee Steinfeld's Performance in True Grit was astonishing for someone to play that at such a young age. She was a 14-year-old child in this movie stepping in to find and have her father's killer hung. She had more perseverance and strength within herself to get things done. She was a very stubborn child who wanted to see her father's killer go down for the crime he did. She drags Cogburn to help her find him, and he brings La Boeuf to help him. They basically go on this journey, and she is not backing down without a fight. Her smart mouth and wit catch her into disputes on multiple occasions, bringing character to her and the movie as a whole. She really had emotion and true grit herself when it came to what she wanted. She was fierce and bold when she went in the face with a gun while dealing with the snakes at the bottom of the pit. Being brave enough at the age of 14 in the movie helped carry her story on this part of her life. Hailee Steinfeld's performance in True Grit definitely did what it needed to do. She played her part well and executed the scenes very well.

Fargo
(image from IMDb.)
I think Fargo was so successful because of how everything slowly pieced together. When watching it, it starts off with this man who wants to kidnap his wife for some money he had been embezzling in his father-in-law's company. We then have a detective come in and try to solve the case initially on a state trooper who was shot and a couple that was killed. She then begins to investigate and notices that a car that helped with the murder was stolen. This then leads to the kidnapping of the wife, and she sets out to solve this case. Everything is lining up in this movie, but it isn't because she can't quite put her finger on what it is that's missing. She then begins to piece together that 6 cars are missing and asks if they've taken inventory of what is missing. His skepticism is what triggers her senses even more. She ends up finding out who committed the murders throughout the town and who kidnapped the man's wife. They also then discover that the man who set up for his wife to be kidnapped was a part of all this. If it weren't for her senses, her meeting with an old friend and that conversation showing her that can be deceiving, she would've never caught everything the way she did. This film was successful because the detective could piece everything together and make it all sense.

The Big Lebowski
(image from Medium)
If you want to talk about comedy, The Big Lebowski is the way to go! Lebowski comes home and then is interrupted by 2 men looking for a Lebowski; he tells them it isn't him, and one of the 2 men pees on his carpet. Lebowski then tells his friends about what happened to him and what his hot-headed friend is. Walter tells them he must call the real Lebowski and ask for a new rug. Walter is a complete idiot with a hot head, which makes the movie funny. Lebowski then goes on a trip to visit the richer Lebowski, only to later find out that his wife was "kidnapped," he needs Lebowski to get her back. Lebowski reports back to his friends, and Walter tells him he needs to do more and whatnot and isn't using his brain. The money required to get the other Lebowski's wife back is 1 million. They have ultimately come up with the idea that she kidnapped herself, and Walter decides he's going to go with Lebowski to drop off the million dollars, only for him to throw his dirty laundry in the street and then get into a car crash and lose the money. This movie continues to have a series of unfortunate events, and it's honestly funny. Walter ultimately makes a fool of himself throughout the movie, and this group of friends continues trying to figure things out in uncanny ways.

The Professional
(image from IFC Center.)
"The Professional" explores significant character development in Leon and Mathilda. Mathilda, from a broken home, seeks refuge with Leon after her family is killed due to a drug deal gone wrong. Their evolving relationship becomes a partnership as Mathilda seeks revenge for her brother's death. Leon teaches her survival skills, and a complex bond forms between them, hinting at a deeper connection. The climax involves Leon sacrificing himself, turning into a human bomb to ensure Mathilda's escape from danger. The grenade latch he leaves as a gift symbolizes their enduring connection.
Mathilda starts a new life at her old school, planting Leon's tree as a metaphor for a fresh start after life's storms. Luc Besson's film skillfully navigates themes of mentorship, sacrifice, and the transformative power of relationships against a backdrop of action and suspense. Overall, "The Professional" is a poignant tale of resilience and the possibility of a new beginning amid adversity. I think that the character development between Leon and Mathilda is something that should not go unnoticed.

Black Swan
(image from Variety.)
“Black Swan,” Nina’s transformation into the black swan is incredible to watch. Nina is determined to land the role of the leading swan, and she works tirelessly to achieve her goal. However, throughout the process, she begins to experience hallucinations and paranoia, causing her to scratch her back and develop severe reactions. She meets one of the other swans, Odile, who is out to get her and her part. Nina’s overbearing mother tracks everything she does, adding to her stress levels. When Nina goes out with Odile, she puts something in Nina’s drink, leading to a new type of experience for Nina. The following day, Nina wakes up for her rehearsal and sees Odile playing her part, which causes her to freak out and continue to hallucinate. On the day of her performance, Nina goes crazy, and her transformation into the black swan is complete. Her performance is incredible, and she becomes one with the black swan, but in the process, she stabs herself while fighting her inner demons. The movie is an excellent watch because it portrays Nina’s transformation and how hard she worked to perfect her role. It also explores the dark side of perfectionism and the cost of pushing oneself too hard. Ultimately, Nina’s story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession and the importance of self-care.
