kevjean is so difficult for me to wrap my head around bc so many of their interactions are colored by a need to survive and guilt and shame. like they were both stuck in a lose lose situation regardless of who did what. whether kevin left or not whether jean ever indicated to kevin how he felt, they were both just forced into a horrible situation and it formed how and what they think of each other u can't remove the lingering memory of the nest from their relationship. like whether you ship them or think they should never talk again the nest is always going to play a key part in their relationship.

Sometimes when I'm reading tsc I have to pause for a second and remind myself that jean has a thick french accent and then keep reading his lines and inner monologue with that in mind

Starting a conspiracy theory that part of the reason Kevin fawns over Jeremy so much publicly is that he fully has a crush on Jeremy but doesn’t know what to do with those feelings so he’s just like “obviously these feelings are Exy related. I’ve only had Exy related feelings in the past and will only have Exy related feelings in the future. Jeremy is just such a good Exy player.” He says with the biggest heart eyes anyone’s ever seen

I think something super heartbreaking is that Kevin is obsessed with the Trojans and Jeremy bc they're good at exy and Jeremy is hot yada yada yada but also the Trojans win the Day Spirit Award for great sportsmanship every year that was named for his mother and Im obsessed with the concept that Kevin idealizes one of the parts his mom brought to the sport, I think even subconsciously. He trained under the ravens for so long that that aspect of the sport was lost on him but he sees his mother's namesake embodied by the Trojans. Also super similar to jean not being able to understand how someone could succeed like the trojans do without violence, Kevin was also raised with exy and violence being synonymous and could never even dream of winning his mother's award. Oh god I've made myself cry

I’m desperately hoping we get some Betsy and Jean scenes in the next book. I think she would be so good for him, once he trusts her enough to let her in.

I wonder what Kevin "it's easier to remain heterosexual" Day will do when he realizes that none of his most admired Exy players are straight

Don't FUCKING argue with me. "Neil Josten let his cigarette burn to the filter without taking a drag. He didn't want the nicotine; he wanted the acrid smoke that reminded him of his mother." Is a fucking dynamite intro!! Is it edgy as fuck? Yeah. So? Is it hella melodramatic? Probably. So? Is it bad writing? Motherfucking NO! It's damn near expert level execution of several writing principles!
Who is the story about? First two words, next question.
Catch the reader's attention as soon as possible? "Why the fuck is he wasting a cigarette?" Intrigue successfully demanded, next question.
Raise questions that will keep the reader hanging long enough to have answered? "Why the fuck does acrid smoke trigger his mommy issues?" + "Wait it's because he burned her corpse??" Many many more questions raised + blind sided reader via preconceived expectations being subverted, next question.
Character establishing moment? What other characters use for physical and emotional regulation, he uses to fucking reminisce and wallow in his feelings, next question.
Set the tone for the rest of the story? Edgy, melodramatic, and emotionally gut wrenching, NEXT. FUCKING. QUESTION!
The Muses asked Nora to roll for Hook and she rolled a nat 20 five times in a row in 30 words or less. Hook, Line, and motherfucking Sinker bitches
Some of y'all need to stop ragging on AFTG's writing and start using it as a fucking case study cus this shit has the addiction capacity of heroine and god help the goddamn saltine cracker throwing stones

Kaz: Alright, so now that the plan is in motion, let’s move.
The other Crows, having no idea what plan is in motion nor where Kaz has been the last 24 full hours:
(under his breath)
kaz: no. no, you may not.

commission for an extremely generous donation to the Gazan families in my bio by @six.ketterdam.crows ❣️ donate and I draw you anything you want
tbh I never saw myself drawing this scene, but I'm glad this commission gave me the opportunity to think about it. I wanted to show the scene in a way that was hopeful but not romantic; to see the moment through Inej's eyes rather than objectifying her (as a trafficking victim forced to be fetishized). I wanted it to be beautiful in a terrifying way, where things appear gilded but when you look into the shadows, they are in a cage filled with objects snatched out of context and displayed as "exotic" paraphernalia. I wanted Kaz to be a source of hope but not a savior; Inej is performing an escape act in this moment, and he's the audience. It was also my first time doing a real room and treating it as a character, which was a learning experience toward a goal of mine.

Do you ever think about the fact that Inej is very likely to go down in history as a Saint, while Kaz would most likely be forever remembered as Ketterdam's boogeyman who lives under beds and snatches disobedient kids? That one day, they would be known as Sankta Inej of the Sea, the patron of weak and hurt, and the Dirtyhands, a superstition for bad luck? Cuz I think about this a lot
