In 2016, the day after the election, I didn't want to go to work. Probably a lot of people felt that way. But you went to work anyway. There was little else to do.
I came in to the bookstore, shared grimaces with everyone at the cash register and customer service desk, tried to smile through the children's section, and let myself into the staff room.
On the table-- nearly covering the table-- were these hearts. Some cut more irregular than others but each one held a message. A sign next to them said "take what you need". Later I would learn which co worker made these hearts and be forever grateful.
I picked up this heart. I kept it in my work lanyard until 2021, when I left the bookstore for greener pastures. This heart has been in my room, on my mirror, ever since.
I wish I could give this heart to each and every one of you. I wish I could cut out and write on thousands of paper heart and lay them out for you to take. Sharing a picture is the next best thing.
Please know that I mean it. I mean it with my whole chest. No matter the coming darkness, no matter what happens -- You are important. You are loved. Take what you need.
