As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms 

As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.

Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.

Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.

www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.

www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.

http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.

www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.

www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.

www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

My crazy prediction is that Biden is going to end up like rhaenyra in history (not recognized as a real president) in the next generation.

For those unfamiliar with the American education system, here's how it basically works when it comes to textbooks:

Textbook publishers have historians write a national version of textbooks which are broadly accurate. Then the states' boards of education can request customization. Based on where you live customization is a euphemism for lies.

The biggest textbook markets in the country are California (liberal) and Texas and Florida (conservative) so what children in California vs Texas and Florida learn can be radically different.

Like 'slaves were happy to be slaves!' different.

But this doesn't just impact the big states. To cut costs, smaller states take their cue from larger ones instead of doing their own customization. Alabama and Oklahoma for instance would mostly use the Texas version instead of paying for a historian to write a custom version.

Trump just got up on his stage for his second speech and said, matter of factly, that the 2020 election was rigged and a bunch of congresspeople cheered. It's only a matter of times before it starts being printed as fact in certain textbooks.

At the very least, they will most definitely write about 'questions that were raised, so we will never know for sure blah blah' instead of stating that Joe Biden won. A lot of children will grow up believing that the 2020 election was either definitely or *possibly* stolen from Trump.

I'm happy to be wrong but this is what they did about slavery, and the civil war, and reconstruction and the Jim Crow south. And an enormous amount of disenfranchisement was (and IS) justified by these lies.

With Trump's inauguration, I think it is timely to discuss the 14 points of ur-fascism (eternal fascism as removed from any one historical moment). All 14 aspects identified by Umberto Eco are present in American society today, exhibiting themselves in everything from the LA fires to the TikTok ban and reinstatement. I made a podcast episode on this which, while short, I think gives a decent overview. Now more than ever, we need to remember that history repeats and be the person that we said we'd be when we learned about WWII in history class.

Trump is appointing three washed-up actors as "ambassador to Hollywood" in order to bring back the "Golden Age of Hollywood". Which has historical precedent: there was an ambassador to Hollywood in the Golden Age, too. His name was Georg Gyssling and he was sent by Hitler to monitor the activities of Hollywood studios. To make sure their films didn't say anything anti-Nazi, resulting in many attempts at anti-fascist films being shut down by the Hays Code. Just a fun historical Hollywood fact there

What concerns me the most about the tiktok ban is that it’s the US government telling us they can flip a switch and take away sources of information and bring them back, modified to their liking. And they can do it whenever they like. What happens when they target major news sources? The book bans that could very likely go into place? What if they get Tumblr— which I KNOW plenty of us use as a source of political info?

This isn’t just a publicity stunt. It’s the US government directly telling millions of people that yes, they can make sure we remain uneducated. They can keep us blind to whatever the fuck they are doing.
