SaneIsCrazy’s Top 10 Albums of 1990
Musically 1990 was a major transitional year for me. My favorite Top 40 station went off the air and hair metal began to go the way of the dinosaur, so I had to find a new genre to obsess over. At the time it was R&B, and if my original Top 10 list still existed it would reveal that when I wasn’t obsessively listening to Rhythm Nation & Like A Prayer, I was all about that Bell Biv Devoe, Keith Sweat, En Vogue, and so forth. Needless to say those albums haven’t aged well. Not even Tony! Toni! Tone! The Revival.
As for my Top 10 as it stands now, I was only willingly listening to three of these albums at the time, and the only rap album among those three was Sex Packets. Luckily I had down-ass family members who pumped some history-in-the-making hip-hop culture into my prepubescent ears. Except KRS-One, who my mom found too pretentious. I still wasn’t that into the genre at the time (lest we forget this was also the MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice era), and I actually just heard one of these albums for the first time ever LAST YEAR. But there is no downplaying the continued importance of all these rap classics. And Depeche Mode.
#10 LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
#9 George Michael - Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1
(anyone else still waiting for Vol. 2?)
#8 Masta Ace - Take A Look Around
#7 Digital Underground - Sex Packets
#6 Too $hort - Short Dog’s in the House
#5 Boogie Down Productions - Edutainment
#4 Depeche Mode - Violator
#3 Public Enemy - Fear of A Black Planet
#2 Ice Cube - Amerikkka’s Most Wanted
#1 A Tribe Called Quest - People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm

Mack 10's debut has aged even more horribly than I thought it would, but it's relatively palatable surrounded by tracks from the first No Limit album I ever bought.

I never would've listened to C-Bo Tales From the Crypt if I hadn't mixed it with my Album of the Summer 1995. Hail Brotha Lynch Hung Season of da Siccness!

I was casually browsing our beloved Web, sourcing tidbits of data about the 1974 double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by the Rock group Genesis, when I came upon one too many fuzzy, (albeit well-intentioned) attempts on the part of some eager fan to explain to the rest of the World...

the perfect song for this very moment. i love when records grow into the sense they were meant to make. a sense you may or may not have been aware of when you made it. when i made this one, i felt it, but i didn’t think i would feel it to this degree more. at least not so soon. shit comes back around to get you. or it waits to get you. not sure. but this song is fully activated now. i’m going to delete this in the morning, maybe. the moment should be the moment, and when the moment ends, so should the moment. produced by Illingsworth.

Two of the greatest rap albums of the 1990s came out on the SAME DAY in 1995. How spoiled were we?

I seriously didn't think both of these albums would be on Spotify... what a pleasant surprise! Here is another replication of one of the 90 minute (well, 80 minutes in this case) mixes I tuned out teenager noise with. (Deedee Truitt voice) That's Typical Bay.
