Running The World 196 - Video Editor
Specialisation
“It’s the editor who orchestrates the rhythm of the images, and that is the rhythm of the dialogue, and of course the rhythm of the music. For me, the editor is like a musician, and often a composer.” Martin Scorcese The creative art of storytelling using cameras, music and special effects and sound effects and dialogue. I have had previous experience of working on a corporate video and a documentary using different types of editing software this was final cut pro and soundtrack pro and garage band specifically for music and video footage. I want to develop my skills and knowledge of assembling different types of footage from rough cut to final cut, finding out about different types of software and this is why I volunteered for a work experience placement. As part of my BA. Hons. Production Course, volunteers were asked to come forward to gain work experience. I put myself forward for the challenge and opportunity of supporting Nick Butter, during his ‘Running the World 196’ campaign. Nick will be running 196 countries this January to support and raise funds for prostate cancer, following the tragic death of a friend of his who was diagnosed with the disease to create 2 to 3-minute video for Vimeo and 60 second cut for Instagram. So the audience can follow his journey through whilst raising money for the charity.
I was given the brief to follow on one man's journey around the world, from the material he sends over to both myself and another student this is in the form of video footage. We want to create a story from the footage by cutting and adding music. This is material which will be of a quality, suitable for social media. To be involved in work like this in the future, making commercials, corporate videos, music videos and television programmes which is what I want to achieve. It will be interesting to be part of this journey, bringing the style/format and having it balance with the music and the footage but most off all getting to know the features on the screen. It's all about finding what works best, and what the viewer wants to see, and the client. Editing so far, I’m learning on the basic techniques, so from cutting and slicing the footage, and adding video effects and transitions but more on problem-solving, searching on YouTube and asking the question, but I would like to expand my knowledge and learn more on the premier pro.
AS2 - Practical Skills Blog
After agreeing to the role of video editor for the campaign as part of my work experience within my media production studies at University. I met with my co-worker Racheal who is a fellow student. We initially met to discuss how we are going to work together to ensure how we are going to support the project. The resources we needed were to be able to communicate with each other by phone or social media. Racheal already had premier pro software set up for the project Premier Pro is a software to enable raw footage to be edited, by sequencing the clips into a completed media product. I chose premier pro because it can be used with other applications but also with personal experience of premiere pro I've previously used in on previous projects in college and more comfortable with this software than final cut having only used this once. However, I had to purchase the package via Adobe cloud because after discussion on the project we thought it would work best if we worked separately but still keep in touch via facetime, even though having the stability of two people working on an edit, we felt it would work effectively and we would be quicker editing the videos separately in time for Nick to publish on Vimeo, because working independently would assist us with holidays sickness and other commitments. Also, we would meet up after a period, or send over the videos after each other edited so we could discuss feedback on each other work and share good practice.
As a starting point, following a request with spark media, myself and Racheal and Tutor Matt, Spark Media a Creative Video Content Agency and Nick Butter a motivational speaker and Marathon Runner where we held a meeting in December to discuss the way forward for creating videos. So Nick brought along to the meeting a previous video footage of a marathon he had run which we discussed camera equipment I.e GoPro. After reviewing the footage and style edit of the video, the whole sequencing of the clips and transition and fast cuts inspired us to produce similar videos and quality edits. I will discuss this and how I have achieved a little later on in my essay. Once, we got more confident and established we needed to do. After a few countries were edited I found myself working a lot faster and got the hang of it. This meant that we didn’t have to meet up so often but we talk on the phone and work independently. However, working as part of a team of two we had to ensure that we could cover each other when either one of us was on holiday or sick. We wanted to make sure that we met deadlines following receiving Nick Footage, as to avoid any delay in covering the journey.
We have had to listen to constructive feedback from our tutor, there was one issue of concern regarding the duration of one of our videos. The video ran for longer than the required time of 4 minutes did not receive as many views. Our tutor advised that in future that we should keep to the required designated time. Enquired to Nick and Scott at Spark Media that is it okay? That we can allow the video to be 7 minutes long because the content of the footage was very important an example of this, the content had him speaking facts and statistics of his journey since January which was more involved than what we needed and at least ran for 15 minutes long. Another example is when he attended prostate cancer head office to meet the chairman and this was most vital for audiences to watch.
I have learned a lot about the role of video editor during this project. I have especially learned how to problem solve, there was a problem we encountered when Nick sent footage of 6 to 10 countries all in one go. This was no fault of Nick or ourselves but was due to technical issues regarding internet connections in the different countries. This meant that we had to prioritize our own time between course studies and work commitments to keep up with the video to ensure no delays occurred and to keep the project running smoothly with no adverse time delays. Other problems we experienced was after reviewing footage and importing them on premier pro, halfway through the edit I noticed around 5 videos that the affected by rain which affected his commentary. To overcome this I googled, audio techniques on premier pro and found that I couldn’t remove the distortion of the rain from the rain. So in order to produce good quality, I made the decision to not use the clips and loss of his commentary.

Research shows that the first 10 to 20 seconds are the most important of a video becuause its needs to be engaging, all for the purpose of donations and sponsorships, so to getting many like and shares and sponsors as possible is the main focus. So my aim was for the first to 20 seconds of the video was for it by making a story so the viewers would in interested in the first shot, for example, Nick Butter had lost his bag in an airport and another was a shot of his blisters because Running a marathon all to raise money I needed good hearty story so people would be kept amused with the video and not lose attention and interest. Whilst editing, I researched some interesting videos of marathon campaigns and saw one of for a London marathon promotional video, which the stylising of the edit was both dramatic and emotional with the use of music and voiceover of a man. It reminded me a movie trailer. So this was to grab the attention of audiences. They would find it cool and audiences and sponsors would be keen to participate and donate money.
Another interesting video was of a marathon in Lanzarote, the use of music, given me inspiration for the Nick Butter videos through its shots transitions and the sophisticated shots of landscapes, runners, and timelapse videos. Promotional video: hhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGPEvj4hEOg.For example factual videos they use cutaways shots and slow-motion effect techniques which will be effective for the videos, in terms of documentary techniques, the poetic mode, exploring with the use of juxtaposing images and montage videos and beginning with a title and music overlaying and participatory mode which the audiences learn and engages with the situation I.e sharing experiences this can relate to promotional videos. For running the world, these techniques is to create an understanding and emotional story and promote his brand which is "Running the world" so audiences would like it and feel part of the journey.
Researching into the topic on how to engage with audiences attention span and the ways to keep viewers engaged. Because my target audience is for online viewers ages 12 upwards, for promotional n videos the attention span is around 60 second or less. Having researched the topic we would put the good stuff first, meaning videos that will keep the audience hooked. Secondly, keep audiences attention by adding new information in every shot and keep it specific. The article also covered have a longer attention span to longer more stylised videos.
Online research for audiences: http://adage.com/article/digitalnext/optimal-length-video-content/299386/
From the technical aspect of being a video editor, I have been using premiere pro software to import footage which allows me to trim, clip and add titles to my video. This is done by adding the footage to the timeline on premier pro and adding another clip together and if I need to cut a clip down I would use "razor tool selection" on premier pro and then "press selection tool to move clips. If I need to move all the clips together without moving them I would use "Track selection forward" so you press on each clip and its moves them together without moving each of the clips that I have put together. To speed/duration a clip on the timeline I would press control/ right click.
To balance out of the sound, I used audio transition in which in useful for balance the sound of his dialogue and the music track behind him speaking after encountering a problem with the levels of sound. After I found a problem in which one of the videos after exporting to Google Drive, the sound levels were all mixed like Nick butter speech was very low and the music was very overpowering. So after research, I found that during moments when both speech and music occur, the speech EQ increases the speech ranges, and the music EQ lowers those exact ranges and they tend not to compete as much. I need to be careful whilst editing that I am balancing the sound in which speech and music occur.
This is a link I found - https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/audio-effects-transitions.html
Another problem I experienced was in balancing the sound and distortion. For example a few of the countries Nick was experiencing adverse weather condition causing a lot of the videos to be very loud and distorted. Whilst editing, I researched "de-hummer" which was a tool on audio effects which allows any unwanted sound to be removed, I found that it improved the audio on the specific video on the timeline because when he was running, Nick had a tendency to touch the mic and for that purpose I had research how to solve the problem where I searched the benefits of using de-hummer, and "de-clicker" removing clicks from sounds, but I felt it didn’t work effectively as for de-hummer because de-hummer enhanced the sound.
With certain transitions, from sound to clips. I used exponential fade this tool allows you to add an audio transition between audio clips to fade in or out as this helps with fading in out of speech with music, you see this used for when Nick is speaking and I want to fade out the commentary and certain type of music loud or low. Also used the same tool for outro video for Running The World logo so its help smoothly ends the video. Other effect tools I used is constant power for sound in which I added at the start of the video where the music picks up and then I add an exponential fade in time for his speech to maintain the speech and the music. With the use of text to help deliver the logo and the distance measurements of certain countries, I used white bold text over a black background for a bolder statement and for the audience to see clearly. Which was places under the Running The World logo and was always at the start of the video.
Another point Nick Butter mentioned was he was happy with the overall videos but the text needed to be seen over a black background and seen more clear because at the start of the journey, the first few completed videos. The text was over the footage, so we took his feedback on board by displaying the text over a black ground at the start of the video.

I make sure I check the footage sent over via google drive before downloading onto my MacBook prior to editing on premier pro. I enjoy creating the transition from one scene shot to another to create the best coverage, I do this by adding video transition and video effects tools on premier pro, I learned this from previous projects.
In terms of music clearances for the videos, Nick Butter set up an account with Epidemic sound in which allows us to download appropriate music suitable for videos. I and Racheal listen to the tracks that are most effective for the certain countries also providing more interest for the listener for both the 60 second cut and 3 to 4-minute video whilst overlooking the different moods that Nick Butter is experiencing so we would change the tempo of the music. We only use one music track for a video, so it's easy for the viewer and doesn't distract away from the message and naturalness of the clip.
I hope you will see, that I have considered a range of starting points when developing solutions. This involved discussing and planning with Racheal and Spark Media on both of the briefs in hand and how we were going to deliver and work together. Nick butter mentioned a group chat in which we will communicate for the duration of the journey and this has worked well to date in which we keep each other informed of our process.
I hope I have been able to demonstrate a use of stylising my edit by making a story and not concentrating on the trivia. I have benefited from the feedback I have been given so far, especially to note that in most edits, Nick Butter will mention more than once for example which country he is in. Although this is interesting, it is not necessary to include this twice, because I have acknowledged that in my error I have included in the video. In future edits, I will be aware not to use phrases which may have used twice in his footage as it is not necessary to enhance the quality of the video.
We were aware of the legal and ethical and regulatory frameworks requirement of taking this project forward, and the need for us not to use our own opinions or show footage which could inaccurate or bias or careless in any way. As it could become a legal issue and we could be liable for any misrepresentation. Scott and Nick reported during the meeting, they informed us that some of the material may show some world issues such as poverty and deprivation, and under the guidance of Nick and the Spark media permission was granted for us to include videos of natural disaster/world issues and news updates of Nick whilst he undergoes the marathon.
To enhance the footage, Nick gave us access for the royalty free music site and we were able to use this as part of our work to accompany the footage in line with and to abide by copyright laws. To make sure that we carry out our work and to consider others we abide by moral considerations, making sure we don't show anything immoral.
Over the duration of the project which will continue until next year, analysing my own progress from teamwork through to final edit has been rewarding. This is why I am looking forward to continuing the project.

About Film:
A vision to create a short film that was both artistic and creative in content. Achieved as no dialogue used, just actors and voiceover to raise awareness of mental health in the male population. Four males waiting in a Doctors Surgery are filmed in a dark place as they are contemplating and living with their phobias. The spotlight is on these 4 individuals, displaying their individual phobias and that we need to tell them that they don't need to stay in a dark place any longer. We are showcasing things are not what they seem.
Communicating with crew, actors and technical staff working to the production schedule, independently liaising with technical staff for props, location and actors. Ethical considerations were taken into account as no misrepresentation of the characters were portrayed. I carried out a risk assessment to avoid and reduce health and safety. Intellectual property and copyright were produced by actors through voiceover and no royalty free music. No offensive material or discrimination portrayed.
When reflecting on the production of my film and in particular my pitch to my Course Tutor, I felt that this was a little confusing in its meaning and that i was trying to convey a message that may not be understood by the audience. I kept my crew and actors informed of these issues and as i worked with these actors previously and they were part of my creative film course and we were able to work together to solve the issue with the use of technical lighting, equipment, props and location and voiceover. Each actor portrayed a particular phobia, one feared darkness, one had fear of failure, one had a compulsive disorder and one had a fear of contaminating germs and carried out continuous hand hygiene. To have more emphasis on the message I showed each character independently exhibiting their phobia and ending on them in a Doctor Surgery all together, so the meaning being your not alone and the feeling of isolation.

Having gained the knowledge and technical skills in both producing and editing a film, I am now going forward on making experimental films and documentaries. My short film is very similar to an experimental film due to its creative portrayal (everything is not what it seems). I'm looking at developing structure of further pre-production work and prioritising time and task. To further my development I have researched videos on the Depict website in which was useful for my idea generation to help me visualise my film. By producing and editing a short film, I was able to liase with crew by keeping a production schedule from production to post production stage.
The production lasted over 2 days in theatre, with moderate changes to dates due to two actors unable make shoot, so being able to arrange and re-organise final filming dates was essential. Following my early years when iI was interested in photography and film, it felt right that my chosen option would be to study Media. After 3 years at college I have embarked a 3 year course in Creative Film production. I get a lot of enjoyment in studying Cinematography from framing the shot to lighting and colour, in which i worked with a range of spotlights, and controlling the final edit where I had the chance to control the colour correction on Premier Pro.
Progressing through the role of Cinematographer, Producer and Director, I have had the opportunity to work as Video Editor as part of a work experience project working with Spark Media. Further opportunity has been offered to work as a Video Editor on the lunar Festival. The festival is taking place in July 2018 and to date, i have attended the first initial meeting, in preparation for managing the process. Areas discussed were location, budget, equipment, travelling, accommodation and duration of the video. As the Video Editor, i met with Will Hodgetts a fellow film peer, to work on notes to discuss final edit. In the meeting we discussed on sectioning each day into folders by crowd footage, music, interviews using Premier Pro editing software for colour correction, sequencing clips and editing sound.
In periods of spare time, I research posts for job opportunities for a video editor and freelance videographers in Birmingham. I have a keen interest to further my knowledge and practical skills in securing a junior video editor position. I am currently looking at a job in London for Junior Video Editor position to create videos for vastly different briefs.
To summarise, I am happy with the overall visual content of my short film, from conception to final edit. I was pleased with the final outcome, that I was able to portray the message effectively however, there were initial concerns on the message, that could have been misleading, I was able to resolve this through further planning and changes with crew and actors.

Experimental Evaluation
My idea or theme is isolation, experimenting with isolation through the use of framing and how framing can maniplulate the meaning of it. how you use it to effect the audience in certain way. i was filming outdoors and indoor with the same lighting, natural lighting and within the house the lights were off and i achieved a natural look to it, it was kinda dark at time but i wanted to use that for the outlook of it, both natural but also shows the eastheticness of it, i also wanted a cold outlook so the use of white in the house and blue as its slowly pan down from a blue ceiling to a white walls. An issue i had, was how shaky the camera was because at the time i had no tripod and i trying to get a high angle for the guy who is looking out at the window to a cold outside, and the him being a darkish shadow through the use of the natural lighting coming in. i was also standing on a ladder at the time whilst tying to capture the shot, with the camera being in my hand it was shaky when i put the footage on the computer it looked very much shaky, i was very concerned and stressed at the time because my actor would have no more time to film because of work responsibilities and i wouldn't have time because of deadline was closing in, and needed time to edit because i decided to use mine in video form instead of photographic form because i kinda wanted a movie look to it also look almost like a 30 second short film of the stages of the man being framed indoor and outdoor look, experimenting with how isolation, how it would look if indoor or outdoor. framing it from above, or below or use of medium shots. when the footage was imported on the computer, it looked even more shaky even though when i was filming it didnt seem as shaky and i was holding the camera very steady, its looked though as it shown the reality of the shot, and that maybe someone was watching him (POV) even thou thats not what i intended. It didn't seem to very bad but it looked very unstable, in the end i kept the shots in the final one because it looked realistic. i very concerned at first because i thought it happened to all my shots but i some of the shots were on the tripod and i kept some of the best. the fact i couldnt steady the shot on premier pro editing software was because it doesn't look as great if you used stabilizer motion in the editing software.
Also it was very shaky, whilst i was looking back over the footage the problem was because i handheld the camera the (Black magic pocket) its a heavy camera and becuase you think its very steady and holding it in that position for a long time, it wont hold, the downside is its still will pick up the movements even thou the camera is powerful and can pick up some beautiful shots. When i noticed this i looked online for any beneficial points to the situation by going on https://wolfcrow.com/blog/the-blackmagic-pocket-camera-guide-part-one-ergonomics-and-specifications/ and because i had a lens attached to the camera it wouldn't help the handheld motion aswell and the fact that the camera is small, you hands are not used to to holding it for so long and the camera is made of magnesium alloy which is strong and light. Also consider https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/lens-options-for-the-black-magic-pocket-cinema-camera/ the stabilized lens it helps to shoot wide shots, or shoulder rig. Whilst i was filming i noticed i didn't get enough camera angles from high above or low because i dint have enough space and the room was slightly small and if i handheld it wouldn't achieve the steadiness of what i wanted and i couldn't lower the tripod any lower to the level i wanted, i couldnt handhold it, so left the camera balanced on the table to achieve the lower angle shot, but for the high angle shot i ended up using the shaky footage which didn't turn out to bad, but in the future i will use a shoulder rig.
A site called video maker had tons of information on telephoto lenses, and how it exaggerates camera shakiness, something that is beneficial for moving shots in my circumstance it is, when i wanted a slow panning down and i had no tripod in order to do so. i couldn’t use a tripod at that time, as i had to film from a high angle also a low angle and the tripod at the time on shoot wasn't working well. The site mentioned that wide angles were better for moving shots because it reduces the effect of shakiness, it great for dynamic action and small rooms because it makes the room look bigger, which would have been great for my project, also wide angle offer great close up on men to macho and ruggedness. It also delivers good lighting setting, for greater exposure on a image, having a larger maximum aperture for low light situations. https://www.videomaker.com/article/10370-lenses-the-long-and-short
Focal length (the angle of view) the telephoto lens is a more narrow field of view bring the image closer to me, brings a longer focal length. this helps for reducing camera movement, saying if you use a shorter focal length its helps reduce shaky hands like getting a little closer to the subject in my case I'm trying to capture him in a field and i want the whole shot to be wide, it will still have this effect and create a more interesting view on it. http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-lenses.htm#camera-shake this was in interesting site talking about focal legths etc.
When filming i could have tried different lenses, use of different lenses to test out the zooming if i needed a close up becuase my idea at first was extreme long shot to show remoteness which i achieved also medium close ups, i wanted to capture close ups and panning in and out, which i couldn't use becuase i brought out onto shoot one lens, and not any other , i could planned more ahead in terms of lenses to capture more stunning shots, like the guy walking towards the camera and him becoming more and more closer to the camera would be expressing the theme of isoclation. Certain lens sizes should have been considered before shoot to test out so in future projects i will know to take out diffferent lenses or find specific lenses for the certain shoot i would undertake.
During production i wanted to practice with how much light is being let in, using the lens to adjust the iris, the amount of light being let in. I practiced using a light bulb on the window shelf before using the main subject, just to get the feel for the camera and to have a sort of dreamy look to it, which would be used in on one shots of the man looking through the window, where the light seems to be going in and out, just experimenting with the natural light coming in through the window and this effects the subject or object in front of it. For example the light slightly dimmering and slightly increasing in light the further i moved the lens, (using natural light in both indoor, outdoor) .
After i noticed it was to blurry and caused it to look too outer focus still had this beautiful look to it as thou it was hallucination or a vision from the past, which i kinda liked in the end, and matched with the idea. Even thou it was around framing and composition i still kept it. i filmed a slightly pan down from him sitting on bed to him, to then panning up to the ceiling, which is a blue, and everything else was almost creme and white, so another thing i focusing on what was within the frame. The connotations white, cream and blue which again in dreamy and almost mourning and white being a pure colour, and natural like a white dove. In the end it wasn't what i intended but it was effective for what i was going At first when i noticed that blurriness (almost dreamlike effect) i thought it was to do with the camera setting and accidental may have touched something, in the end i noticed i was shooting in raw, making the camera over exposed and is more forgiving highlights and naturalness to the image on the plus side giving you more flexibility to control overall image.Overall the blurriness happened because of to much light being let in.
With Raw format it it processes a lot of information regarding the image colour and tones etc.https://nofilmschool.com/2013/11/raw-firmware-update-1-5-cinema-dng-blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera i found this very useful when finding out raw footage and how it can capture beautiful shots. i found that the downside to it, it takes more space up on the camera because at first i thought i lost my footage, but it was to do with the camera shooting in raw, it used up my SD card, but it was all good, because when out on shoot, i wanted to record one last shot, but i coundn’t because it would allow me to record anymore, and i was very concerned that i lost the footage because i couldn't play back the footage i already had on camera, but i straight went back home to put onto computer and it was all good only to realise some shots were blurry or shaky.

Within my shots i used props to tell my story, and positioning the object in the frame was important so i used information which i mentioned in my proposal for example tight framing etc. I very intrestrested in how it would turn out and turned out pretty well, was a little disappointed because the how shaky the camera was but overall i was very happy and kinda wanted it to turn out like a short film so that it gave more of a message also it cutting to him being isolated in a filed and then back to him in the house, where he was positioned in the window looking out, or him on cold room/sitting on the bed smoking etc and him close up to the camera. Some shots were blurry but i was happy with it because it look natural and told more of a story. (portfolio book to read) drawings and inspiration. (Given on Thursday 7th December)

John ford was famous for his “frame within frame”in which he usedobjecst to reflect the use of enclosement, making the character seems enclosed in a situation. Film a critical introduction book mentioned “arthetictual lines of doors and windows on his set to enclose his characters. The book what i was most interested about was loose framing, which i never heard of and Tight framing, and i was interested in using this information in my experimental using objects to show the characters emotion or predicament. “directors place actors in the frame, they make choices regarding the way those actors bodies will be situated in space ”. i wanted to use isolation, so how would i position someone to look isolated. so yes... a cold field, nothing there but some trees, and maybe position in in the middle of the two trees. my story is about man who is smoking, time taken from his life, and how smoking caused him to be isolated and alone in the world.
Cinematography
When i first notice things in a movie, i like to look out for the framing, composition, and position of the where the character is, in which allows us more to either either be looking at whether its from their perspective as the characters or just watching from the side, Also framings can put you in a position that can be very odd, very peculiar and makes you feel what they are feeling. Look at Stanley Kubrick work with “the shining” its gives you the sense of isolation and more importantly its the gives the impression of power and that maybe something will happen. Also framing work of his shots are masterful, showing view one person can look so small against the big interior of the room or how one can look so big.
Framing, picture, The camera position, the way the characters would be poisoned in the particular box, what you see in the viewfinder, so the director or cinematographer is complete control of what the audience will see.. I’m gonna name the most known one who is Wes anderson. He frames the positioned characters to as thou they are actually in a box, the props and if the characters were to move, they are still in such a position that vertically symmetrical, as thou you feel like you are watching stager production its also held on the stage, in one position. His work is meticulousness and obsessivenes. His triats are truly to admire, so crisp clean and disarmingly unusual, its as thou it doesn’t seem a reality.
Quote:
Composition really comes under Wes anderson wok once again and Stanley Kubrick, to get the perfect held shot, the way its structured to either have a positive or negative effect on the audience. This is what i adore about composition, to make the audience think, to keep them watching look at “Blair witch Project” always from there point of view, the constant facial expression from the characters. Composition, its the “position” uses rule of thirds (the way the image is set out, set out into nine equal box by two equally spaced horizontal lines) and depth of filed ( the distance between the subjects, is the subject closer, the focused its on and the furthered of the subject the less focus its in) and balance ( the subjects or objects in the frame are showing a balance in the clothing or colour, or size or texture to show the abnormality look at “clockwork orange”) shallow focus ( one part of the image is in focus and the other part of the image is out of focus) deep focus (All in focus the opposite to shallow focus) focus pulls (the changing from being in focus on a object or subject to then not being in focus)
Quote:
Shot size, The way the camera is placed for the character on screen or where the character may be, or could shot could be tricking us, the camera could be poisoned in a park for example, and shows the shot of the face it doesn’t mean they are there. The shot size, you usually see it on storyboards in the pre production stage. Its how you see the shot, like is the character very far from the camera could be very near the character, these ate called a XLS abbreviates Extreme Long Shot, the character is further away from the scene. . Also CU which is Close Up of the characters face, much clearer to see, its all to do with emotions, we are noticing how the characters is feeling more but that can be used when there ELS we get the sense that its isolated. Stanley Kubrick uses Extreme long shot in the “the shining” to have the sense of seclusion outlook which is a powerfull tool. Extreme Close ups is used a lot, and is used to make the audience feel the emotion of the character on screen, to show there expressions like the frightened look of Danny in the “the shining”.
Camera Angles, Camera position mostly the same, the camera could be tilted and positioned to look as thou you are feeling disoriented to what going on, on screen, director Christopher Nolan his film “inception” uses angles to make the audience feel uneasy like the beautiful use of canted angle in the fight scene, every being tilted. angles that is there for the use of making look powerful and domineering, the opposite being weak, so i could place the camera where the character who could holding a Ciggerate look weak and reverse it to that the Ciggerate is looking weak and the person who is holding it look larger and more dominant that makes the audience think. This is brought threw from camera angles commonly known as Low angle and High angles. Its can express different meanings. This is good read about it: https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/film-studies-101-camera-shots-styles/ Also http://learnaboutfilm.com/film-language/picture/camera-position/
Experimental filming
Each shot being something different but as inviting as the story, the image, its framing, tells the story.
Centred around how framing and camera angles and all of the above can effect an audience on a certain topic like the arts of stanley kubrick work, his idealogical effects of alienation and fear. Also a willing suspension of disbelief. There are many implicit meaning and emotions to what he puts his characters through and more importantly the audience and how we interpret it. “it Shoukd be a progression of mood and feeling. The theme, whats behind emotion, the meanings all thats come later. The feel of the experience is the important thing, not the abiailyt to verbalise or analyse it” Stanley Kubrick
Each shots will show the effect of one man when smoking, each shot will show the meanings of isolation, isolation being the effects of loneliness, lost and no hope and contrubute to anxiety.
Visually seeing the effects of smoking frame by frame, will be of a man in his 50s who has smoked all his life. each shot will be of him in different places when smoking and the ciggerate being the centre of attention. Showing the circumstance smoking as put you in, a shot of his point of view as the ciggerate enter his mouth, a shot of him centred right in the middle of a cold desolate field (use of VWS or WS) or him looking down at the Ciggerate maybe use of “ One shot” the shining shot (Stanley Kubrick film) used where you place the camera on the floor and tilt up, this makes the scene very unusual, its oddly disturbing and ca. mean a lot of things. In this case smoking being something you hunger, and the man is looking down, and shows more of the expression. When i tilt the camera up, i can tilt the camera to the side as thou we using a canted angle but also film it as thou its spinning on its head. The expressive qualities within a shot, the angle of the camera to the object, being the case “man smoking, half his face and body not within the frame also the association of camera within character, deeper meaning and relationship of the camera the character is he left with nothing after smoking all his life and what behind the man is a empty world a cold isolated backdrop being this is where its brought him too. When first dealing with the subject of smoking and how i could have show it, i first thought the effects of smoking, there being 26 effects overall, and how i could incorporate that, i first wrote a list down before going to my final idea . the feeling of isolation and dread. The guys would be going through different scenarios, use of different camera angles to compliment the thoughts he is under and emotions.

Evaluation Billboard
The billboard idea, i was very pleased with the overall outlook of the billboard, as many footage i had taken i only had to choice a few, ended up using one that is eye catching to the viewer but also catches attention of those who like adverts that are fun, also The use of slow motion is effective. During production, i had filmed with 3 class mates that also helped me on how it would look, and if there was anything else i could have add to the billboard overall look.
The use of black background, for the use an stylistic choice, also an added style from the M&S adverts. Very modern and useful for stock footage, and thats what i was trying to achieve where i have it ad advert but also good tool for students like the stock photography and footage called Shuttertstock or Getty. Creativeness for the shoot, use of balloons and party poppers, was all to do with colour and i archived that,so yes i kinda achieved the them of colour but on the other hand there was problems with getting all the colour in the frame, so like loads balloons dropping down in the frame, or loads of the paper that explodes form the party popper, that in the end, i through that have little in the frame could be more simple and more appealing, even though my first idea was having loads going on at once and that its a party themed and celebrating life and loads of things happen at once, that in the edit, i could overlap the footage and have it look like there is two things going on at once and plus audiences tend to catch on to imaginative adverts for example “lego adverts, where the characters from the lego brand, blend into the surrounding where the billboard is placed, where lego characters are parading the streets.
Finding statistics on how digital signages catches attention of 70% of the public and seeing things in slow motion is a incredible for viewers as its said its rather unusual and that we usually see things in fast motion, but we usually think of how it would look like in slow motion and is said to be beautiful way to advertise products or message in my case a message. Also the theme party, party are fast and very fun, and very loud, that it would be strange to use party theme objects in slow motion for the unusualness, and also give the message of celebration and life. In which one across successfull, but i could have given a more colourful theme for example during my research, i looked through lights and colour of lights and how that is appealing for audiences also being the season of christmas, so i could have had colourful lights exploding, in slow motion, smashing them on the floor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rm4rxF1z1k an you tube link that helped me on setting up camera. My billboard idea was going to be portrait design to carry out the look of the long portrait digital billboard in new York, because in the end i filmed in landscape, an 16:9. due to me not filming in the correct format (vertical) i have decided to change the location of my billboard to somewhere it can be shown in landscape because my original idea is is new york on in the middle of intersecton. I chosen to use the digital billboard in http://www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/insanely-large-billboard-will-light-entire-block-times-square-starting-tonight-161480/ A link to the site including information on eight story billboard, higher resolution billboard. I chosen New York overall because of its centred in New York, the most popular tourist place plus where I'm advertising is where all the big shops are and hundred commuters pass everyday, it would be beautiful to see on new years eve, where they host the big annual new years party, celebrate new year and being the fact that my billboard is celebrating life it would be perfect for that occasion.
Also finding out that my advert is about celebrating life, there needed to be a hashtag in there somewhere, something that leaves the audience to do something, to take onto social media and post. something that gets the whole world talking plus New York would be the perfect place, taking images and posting things on twitter. i thought well because its celebrating life i researched popular Hastags and i had found HastagNew beginnings which i put under the big bold title “celebrate life” the fact i chose this because was that we all need a fresh start, something people will look forward to also everything that is happening in the world, we needs something that highlights positivity and party, something that is bold and entertaining and people wanna watch and see what will happen next after the video, and people can bring their own interpertation to it. I'm happy i chose this as the final billboard, because it landscape, and it reaches from 45th street to 46th street, which is insane and would take the attention of any of the other billboards and mainly focus on this eight story billboard.
Gibbs Model
Whilst in production, the camera i was using was a Sony DX100, which i my first practice on the camera and setting, because i was filming in slow motion i noticed that after a while into the filming most of the shots were looking outer focus, further from the camera, for example when we were filming the balloons dropping down we saw that most of them were outer focus. I feeling concerned because all my my shots were going to be in slow motion and i thought that is why they are outer focus because we are filming in 250fps it may not take it. In the end i thought most of the shots that is going to be used, looked appealing but in the end, after looking them over na dover again it seemed to look natural in the lighting, but the issue with it being that my first idea was to have everything in focus, sharp and crisp to have almost M&S style, almost very stylistic choice and contemporary which was my aim. In the shoot, at first i though it was to do with the frames per second or the lighting in the video so i goggled the information and noticed as site called cinema5d they mentioned about checking the focus before you start shooting, when i was setting up i was changing the position if the camera to see if that could help or changing the position of where of the object would be, i ended up filming really close up onto the object, which worked well and i found that the closer the object is, its sharper and more in focus than in being futher away. When i went on nofilmschool and searched “how do you maintain focus when the camera is in motion” they mentioned shooting with a wider lens, also bumping up the achieve a more deeper depth of filed, so the subject stay in focus more easily. They also said maintaining the focus between you and said object also increasing the aperture number “f” stop (amount of light let in)this was really useful information to use when i film in slow motion for future projects. What else could i have done.. whilst filming i could have changed the fps or adjusted the aperture, or change the position of the lights, because i was using two lights, both starting at the black board, and for the object will be placed. The lights may have affected the filming and causing the blurriness, because depending on the amount of light let in that is controlling size of the lens aperture causing it either blur the background or have something in focus.
In post production, during the editing progress i was checking over the footage, and most of the shots i was really pleased with, and keeping some of the outer focus ones because it looked natural in the end. I wanted to use overlapping footage where i had one piece of footage over an another for the theme i was going for. The footage seemed to be lagging and was taking a while to render.
I was feeling stressed and bothered because i wanted footage to overlap because of the timing of the digital board, also the fact that the footage would look entertaining and more thing going on, the more fun to watch, but not to much going on, the colour and christmas feel of the billboard i was going for, where you have objects exploding or falling in slow motion and overlapping it with colourful gold stars falling down, would all seem to be looking like its actually going on at once. Because i had 3 clips on top of each other i thought of using sequence all clips, which took ages to render, unfortunately i couldn't add anymore clips on, this was due to the resolution of the camera i was filming with was too high and the camera record full Hd up and up to 1000fps which may have been the problem. At first i thought i was to do with the software,or the fact i was recording in 250fps, i rendered the video to in and out, to sequence it all, forms into one clip, but still having the 3 clips within it, and somehow wasn't taking anymore clips because its seemed to be increasing the lagging of the videos, i saved the project and closed it down, and when i opened it back up again it was still lagging after noticing the increasing lagging. i looked it up on google to make sense of the issue.https://video.stackexchange.com/questions/8133/adobe-premiere-preview-video-lagging. The machine couldn't handle with the resolution, unfortunate that we couldn't resolve the issue because the mac couldn't support it and the fact that everything is evolving. For the future, use of suffiencient planning for filming slow motion for example going into more research on the matter of footage lagging.

Digital Billboard (Pre- Prod)
Less than 30 seconds Use of mine en scene to connect with audience. No music or dialogue
Colour, is the main thing i focus when i see billboards,. Something that connects with audience not even billboards but adverts. Look at the use of Sony Bravia adverts which i took inspiration from, you wouldn't think it was to do with technology, it was like watching a advert from Channel 4, something modern but really catched on with the audience. The campaign was to involve colour, and how “colour like no other” can raise awareness among digital influencers. They become so popular with the way they endorsed sony, that channel 4 games site held a online game to promote paint. I honestly thought i was watching a deluxe advert with these advertising campaigns. the paint advert was like a firework display of paint and liquid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IqGlnrbc3Q Link to Sony Bravia Advert.
Colour being an objective of mine, something that introduces an product or even service but in unusual way. Mind mapping ideas below. Many ideas came to mind what i can do for a billboard, all under 30 seconds for the transient nature of the audience that would be bold and quick but i also need to be careful with the way it can effect audience eyes taking into account of those with photosensitive epilepsy to flashing lights.
Statement of intent:
To draw public awareness to young people who are homeless
Life can be colourful, explosive and fun
Life is a wheel- going round and round
Sparks can fly when things go wrong
But together we can help bring a spark to life of young people in the right way if we support homeless charity.
The idea of colour and lights together, So i was gonna introduce a fairground, lights and fun, and introduce a wheel, spinning round i.e ferris wheel, and someone using sparklers, fireworks exploding in the air, and party poppers exploding (the use of all the colour from the party poppers in slow motion and repeats again- camera moves back- repeats again ). “helping to bring a spark of hope to young homeless people” Shows a charity name and “we need you help” all under 30 seconds.
SHOTLIST:
