Hournite Secret Santa for @gertstarlight from the Hournite Discord group!!
Hope you enjoy it and have a wonderful 2023!!
---
"Rick! What are you doing here?"
"Beth!" He stepped forward to greet her, but was careful to stay close to the walls so that they wouldn't obstruct the already-too-busy ER or delay anyone from getting the medical attention they needed.
He needed attention, but not that kind of attention.
"I've been looking for you all day."
Her eyes widened, jumping straight to the worst conclusion. Clearly, he was not reassuring enough. "Did something happen? Are you hurt? Do you need help--"
"No no no," he scrambled to relief her. "Nothing happened. I just wanted to see you."
Her expression shifted from confusion to surprise, then as his words sank in, a shyness took over her face.
"Oh."
Rick’s eyes darted to the gravel floor as he felt a heat rush up his neck.
They’d been dating for a year, but he still wasn’t used to saying words of affection. Beth had been working him up towards it for the past few months, but ever since she took up the internship at the hospital, Rick had barely had the chance to see her. When he woke up today, he felt it deep within his bones that if he didn’t get to see her today, he’d probably combust. So, he came down to the hospital as early as he could, on the off chance that he could catch her on her break.
A crash of thunder jolted Rick from his thoughts. "Oh right, I almost forgot. I have something for you." He fished out a little box from his back pocket.
"Oh?"
“Is that all you’re going to say from now on? ‘Oh’?” The corner of his lips couldn’t help but lift up at the adorable look of bewilderment in her eyes.
"Oh. I mean-- No, I just--"
"I’m just teasing,” he chuckled as he fished out the small box from his back pocket. “Here.”
“For me?” she looked at it with wide eyes, gingerly taking the box from his hand. “That’s so thoughtful, Rick. But... what’s the occasion? It isn’t Christmas, or my birthday, or our--”
“Anniversary.” They said at the same time.
“Wait, it’s our anniversary?! So soon?”
Rick nodded, rocking on the back of his heels.
Her face fell. She pulled out her phone from her back pocket to check out the date. “Oh my gosh, you’re right! I can’t believe I forgot!”
He gave what he thought was a reassuring smile. “It’s okay. You’ve been so busy with your internship, I figured it would slip your mind.”
“I’m so sorry, Rick. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”
He shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. Now, open it.”
“Here? Now?”
He nodded.
She pouted. “But I wanted to open it when I get home--”
“I wanna know if you like it.”
“I love it!” She looked at him in that How dare you? way she had whenever anyone dared to talk bad about her boyfriend.
He couldn’t help laughing. “But you haven’t even opened it yet!”
“It’s from you, Rick! You know I’d love it no matter what it is!” She beamed reassuringly.
“Open it. I want to see your reaction before I go.”
Thunder crashed and a light drizzle began.
“Come on,” he coaxed. “We don’t have much time if I’m going to make it back to the Pit-stop before the storm goes full swing.”
She huffed. “Oh, alright...”
A little owl pendant sat on a delicate gold chain. Tiny green gems lit up its eyes, giving it a look of gentle defiance as it caught the light and winked at her.
Beth gasped.
“D-do you like it?” He bit his bottom lip.
“I love it! Thanks Rick!” She beamed, the warmth of her smile radiating through every inch of her body.
“Here, let me help you put it on.”
She happily obliged, glad to have a piece of him with her after spending so much time apart.
He turned back to her. “Happy anniversary, Beth.”
“And happy anniversary to you too, Rick,” she said, reaching out to thread her fingers through his.
Another crash of thunder cracked through the air and the light drizzle became a heavy downpour.
“I should go now. I’ll come see you again soon, okay?”
“Okay,” she sighed, letting go of his fingers reluctantly.
He took off his jacket, intending to use it as a makeshift umbrella, and stepped out into the rain. “See you soon, Beth!”
Just when he was about to take his third step in the rain, he heard a faint call of his name, nearly drowned out by the thundering storm.
“RICK!”
He turned, only to see Beth hurrying toward him.
“W-wait, Beth! The rain! Your hair--”
“I don’t care,” she grinned, sidling up towards him.
He held the jacket over her, “What...?”
“You forgot this!” she pulled his collar down towards her, leaned up...
... and kissed him.
Her lips felt warm in the cool rain, and he could taste a hint of... strawberries?
She was about to break apart when he caught her lips again between his own, and this time, he could taste the smile that cracked across her lips, the heat of her radiating through him, down to his very bones.
They broke apart after a few minutes, both completely drenched despite Rick’s jacket-umbrella.
He stared down at her dazedly and watched as sudden shyness overcame her.  Her eyes darted everywhere except at him, and for a moment, he couldn’t believe he was lucky enough to call this bold but shy woman in front of him his girlfriend.
He breathed in a deep breath of the cool air, then asked...
“One more for the road?”

Hournite Week 2022 Day 7: Romantic Comedy
🎵: Love you like the movies (Anthem Lights)
"Just reduce the radius, and adjust the speed parameter... and there! I got it! I found the--"
Beth turned and was immediately faced with a pair of warm brown eyes. Rick.
"O-oh," Beth stammered. "Sorry about that. I didn't know you were there."
"S-sorry," Rick's voice broke a little as he said. But he made no move to shift away from the back of Beth's seat. He had always liked watching her work, and the infectious smile on her face whenever she makes a breakthrough is his favourite part of it all.
"Is it just me or do you feel like barfing too?" Yolanda said in a dry voice from beside Courtney, the two of them watching from a dark corner of the room. A corner of her lips is quirked up in a knowing smile. "How can they be so oblivious?"
Courtney grinned. "I think it's sweet. It's kinda like watching a rom-com."
"Just kiss already!"

Rick's breath caught at the bright smile that spread across her face. And then he was reminded by the fact that the smile wasn't for him, but for another girl. Judy.
Judy had arrived in Blue Valley High a few weeks ago; the new kid just moved in from California with her mom in the middle of the school year. Beth, being the friendliest person in all of Blue Valley, quickly gravitated towards her and tried to make her feel comfortable.
"That's such a Beth thing to do," Courtney said when Rick told her that Beth was spending lunch with the new kid again.
"Beth has always had a soft spot for the outcasts and people who don't fit in," came Yolanda.
"Sylvester, Courtney, me... Cindy (eugh)," she made a gagging motion. "...And even you, Rick."
Rick stilled.
"W-what do you mean?"
"She's always spending extra time with you, giving you the granola bar in her lunchbox. The same one she never touches," she said that last part in a whisper. "AND she always spends more time with you than she does the rest of us."
"... so?"
"So..." Yolanda emphasised, dragging out the vowel. "She's always extra nice to us. It's just the goodness in her. Haven't you noticed?"
Rick looked down at his lunch, or what pathetic meal he had managed to put together by himself now that Matt was gone.
Beth used to give him her granola bar. And he just took it, barely questioning anything she did. He'd always thought that maybe she hated granola, but she did eat it that one time he put it back in her lunchbox because he wasn't hungry. Maybe she was just pitying him after all.
"Beth is just Beth, you know? Always ready to share her love to anyone who needs it. Now that we have each other--"
"And the JSA," Yolanda correctef.
"AND the JSA..." Courtney repeated. "I guess Judy's next," Courtney shrugged, taking a bite of her lunch and promptly spitting it out. "Eugh. What did Mike put in this?"
"I don't wanna know." Yolanda quipped as she avoided looking in Courtney's direction.
Rick turned his attention back to the scene in front of him. Beth has always had a soft spot for the weak, but that's all it is with Judy, right? It's not like she likes her or anything.
It's not like she likes you, either.
He swats the air around his head, as if trying to get rid of the thought. And that's when he sees it. Beth was blushing. In front of Judy. Or because of Judy. And they were standing way too close to each other.
"--yea, I mean, I wish it was true but..." Beth laughed awkwardly, her face turning a deeper shade as she says. "We're just friends."
"That can't be true, Beth," the other girl chuckled. "Anyone with eyes would know you're a great catch."
And then she punched Beth playfully in the shoulder.
Punched.
Beth.
PLAYFULLY.
That's it.
"Hey!" Rick said, a little too loudly.
"Oh! Rick!" Beth jumped a little, but quickly recovered. "I-I was just telling Judy about the movie we saw the other day. Turns out she's a big fan too! Just like us!"
"Uh huh..." He said, his eyes on the other girl, who is smiling innocently, as though she wasn't just flirting with Beth a few seconds ago.
"Yea, I heard it was a good film. Lots of action. And romance too," Judy raised an eyebrow as she turned her attention to him. "I've always been a sucker for romance."
"Oooh, you should come with us!" Beth interjected. "It's rare to find another fan--"
"No." Rick said.
"No?" Beth turned her attention to him, confused. "But--"
"NO." He repeated.
Judy looked a lot less rattled than he expected. She even looked... smug? "That's okay, I understand. They're special nights. I get it."
"No, you have it all wrong. Rick and I--"
"Are more than just friends." Rick cut in, his arms enveloping Beth. His eyes were laser-focused on the enemy in front of him, daring her to challenge him.
Judy's eyes darted from Rick to Beth, and back again. Then she smiled. SMILED. At them both.
The bell rang.
"Oops. I forgot I have to go help Mr Diesinger after school. I think I better go--"
"But Judy, wait, I thought we were studying together after school!" Beth shouted after her.
"You've got a partner for that," Judy said, raising a peace sign over her shoulder as she casually walks away.
Leaving the two of them alone in the hallway.
"Uh... Rick...? What's wrong?" Beth asked, her voice shaking with anxiety. "Did something happen at home?"
He did not answer.
"Rick...?" She prompted. "You're scaring me. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," he said.
"U-uh... I need to get my books..."
"O-oh," he stepped away. "Sorry."
"It's okay," she said, grabbing a book from her locker and gingerly closing it shut. "Are you alright?"
"...yea. I just--" he started, then stopped. He ran his hand over his already messy hair.
"Did Matt come back?" She asked, her eyes wide with alarm. "Did he try to steal your things again?"
He let out a heavy breath. "No."
Her shoulders relaxed and she turned back to her backpack, rearranging its contents to fit the books before she put it back on.
"... But something precious was almost taken away from me," he said softly.
"What?" She asked.
"Nothing."
They turned and walked to the exit.
"Do you wanna hitch a ride home?" He asked, fiddling with the messy strands on the back of his head. "We could drop by Richie's before we head back."
"Sure," she beamed.
And all was right with the world again.

"How long more till we get there?"
"Hmm... another 2 hours, I think. I'd have to use the goggles to be sure, but they're in the back and..."
"They're fast asleep, aren't they?"
"Yup," Beth said, a tiny smile across her lips.
Rick let out a laugh. "So much for JSA bonding time."
"You know how it is. Yolanda had to work double shifts for a full week before her mom agreed to let her come, and Court..."
He groaned. "She went night patrolling again, didn't she?"
"I didn't say anything! You guessed it yourself," Beth raised her hands in protest.
"Well, that just leaves the two of us, then."
"Uh huh."
Beth had never been particularly comfortable with silence, and this was not an exception. She felt a nervous energy take over her as they continued down the road. Rick was silent too, but he at least had a reason to be, busy ad he was with driving. She kinda wished Courtney or Yolanda would start snoring, then she'd at least have something to say or occupy her attentions. She suddenly felt like her hands were strangely empty. She needed to hold something. Quick.
"Oh! I almost forgot! I brought these with me for the road trip."
Rick took a quick glance over. "CDs?"
"They're Courtney and Yolanda's favourites, and of course, yours too. I thought it'd be fun if we had carpool karaoke or something, but I guess we can just listen to them."
"Okay," he said, a smile tugging on the side of his lips.
It took her a while to figure out how to use the player in the mustang, but she pressed a few buttons and somehow, music started pouring out of the speakers.
She takes my breath away, she's got me calling everyday, I can't seem to get enough, could this be love?
"Oh. Wait. Not that one."
This ain't love. I never understood the game. Forever awkward when I tried to play it.
"Not that one either."
If all it is is eight letters, why is it so hard to say?
"AUGH!" Beth reached out to turn off the player.
"Wait." Rick grabbed her hand. "I kinda like this song."
She felt a warm sensation spreading from his hand on hers to her heart, and then the rest of her body. Was that... a knowing smile on his lips? What must have only been a few seconds felt like minutes because she couldn't take her eyes off that breathtaking grin, his hand still holding hers even as he returned his attention to the road.
"What's going on?" Courtney stirred in the backseat. "Are we there yet?"
Beth pulled her hand away. "N-not yet. Maybe another 90 minutes?"
"Okay..." Beth was grateful that Courtney was too sleep-addled to see the blush creeping up her neck when she yawned melted back into her seat.
She turned to see a smile tugging the corner of Rick's lips.
This is going to be a very long 90 minutes...

Happy Beth Day!
"Where are we going?"
"It won't be a secret anymore if I just tell you, will it?" His lips quirked as he made a turn on the dark street. He could see from the corner of his eyes that she was getting anxious, her curiosity was making her bounce in her seats. "Just trust me, okay? It's just right around the corner."
She was just about to ask if they were there yet when he pulled over at a dark and quiet spot on a hill, lit only by the crescent moonlight.
"You're... not gonna stab me and then leave me here to die, right?" she semi-joked.
He chuckled as he got out of the car and opened her door for her. "Here, you can see for yourself."
She took three cautious steps into the darkness. "Okay... uhm... what did you want to show me-"
"SURPRISE!"
"Eek!"
The lights turned on, revealing tables of her favourite food (oh, she loved food) and her beloved friends and family.
"Aww... you guys..."
"Happy Beth Day!" Courtney said with a flourish of enthusiastic jazz hands. "We know it's not until tomorrow, but we thought it would be perfect to throw a little party at midnight for our Dr. Midnite!"
She looked around at the small crowd of her favourite people in the world. Courtney and Yolanda... Mr. and Mrs. Dugan... her Mom and Dad... and Mike and Jakeem (who even brought party poppers)...
... and of course, Rick.
Yolanda, hands full with Beth's favourite strawberry cake, bent over to Beth's ear and said conspiratorially, "It was actually Rick's idea."
"Happy birthday, Dr. Midnite," he said, looking at her with the softest expression she'd seen on him. And for a moment, she just couldn't bear to tear her eyes away.
"Oh! The candle's almost burning out! Go on, Beth, make a wish!" Courtney said.
"Just make sure you don't tell Jakeem what it is, or who knows what trouble we'll have this time." Mike joked.
"Hey! That was one time!" Jakeem protested.
Beth felt a fuzzy feeling in her chest, like it was bursting through the seams. She looked around at the people she loved and couldn't help the smile that came to her lips as she knew exactly what to wish for.
She closed her eyes, put her hands together, and silently sent her wish to the lone candle and blew it out.
"Alright everyone, help yourselves to the food! We have plenty to go around here!" Beth's Dad clapped Mike and Jakeem on the back and turned them toward the tables as everyone else began picking up their own plates.
Rick was the only one who stayed behind. "So, what did you wish for?"
She beamed. "It won't be a secret anymore if I just tell you, will it?"
He let out a laugh. "Touché."
As he turned and walked toward the tables, she looked at his retreating figure and silently repeated her wish in her heart.

Hournite Royalty AU (+ drabbles)
"Remember, Rick. You only have until midnight. Once the hourglass runs out-"
"I know, I know. I'll be back to normal again." He placed the hourglass in his front pocket. "Thanks for the help, Mike. I really appreciate it."
"No problem, my man. After all, what are fairy godbrothers for?"
Rick was about to turn and head toward the carriage that Mike lovingly called 'Stripe' (which was weird, because there wasn't any stripe pattern to be found), before his fairy godbrother called out, "Oh, and that's Magic Mike to you!"
---
"Cool hourglass."
He jumped. He wasn't expecting to talk to anyone tonight. "Uhh... thanks." His eyes scanned the stunning girl in front of him as his brain struggled to come up with something. What did people say when they meet someone for the first time?
"Catching some air too?" she gestured at the cool night air. "It can get kinda stuffy inside, huh?"
"Uh... yea."
She took the spot next to him. "I didn't expect tonight to be so... overwhelming."
He nodded. The gold tapestry, the fancy champagne, and the tiny food that you can never get satisfied from... it all screamed of money. Something he and his uncle didn't have. That didn't stop his uncle from inviting himself to this swanky party and trying to land himself some wealthy heiress, though.
But from the dirty looks that the ladies (including the waitresses) have been sending his uncle, it would take a lot more than a fancy new suit (that he likely bought with the money his parents left for him) to turn that frog into a prince. Some ladies were even gossiping about how his uncle tried to accost the princess earlier that evening. The thought of his uncle trying to seduce a girl young enough to be his daughter sent a shiver down his spine.
"My parents thought it'd be a great idea. They keep pushing me to make new friends, now that they're too busy with work and all to hang out with me. But I don't quite fit in with the crowd out there. I never know what to do or what to say-"
"You're doing fine," he tried to reassure her, then realised it was kinda rude to interrupt her. "Oh, I'm sorry. Uh... you were saying?"
Her big round eyes narrowed. And narrowed further. Was she mad at him because he interrupted her?
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt-"
He then noticed that she was leaning in, and her eyes didn't look mad. They looked... bewildered.
"Wait, are you short-sighted or something?"
She jumped at the observation and put some distance between them. "Oh, haha..." she blushed. "You caught me."
He couldn't help but chuckle.
"I just-" she sighed. "You see... I had this idea to not wear my glasses tonight, 'cause it didn't match with my dress. But right now, it doesn't seem as smart as I originally thought."
"I see..."
"Yea, my eyesight is really bad, so I gotta squint really hard to see clearly, but even then, it's not perfect. Ahh... curse it. I really wanted to see you-"
As if realising what she was about to say, she cut herself off promptly and took a step back. Just then, the sound of several musicians tuning their instruments came from the ballroom.
"Oh! They're preparing to play the next waltz. I must head back before my parents wonder where I went."
Just as she turned to leave, she felt a tug on her sleeve.
"Don't go," he said, his voice cracking. He cleared his throat. "I mean, not before we have a dance."
She couldn't see his face, but the sincerity in his voice sent warmth through her body.
Her lips tilted up in a sweet smile. "I'd love to."

This is for Nikki, whose wishlist contained a royalty/fantasy AU! :D I couldn't get the idea of a genderbent Cinderella AU out of my head, so here you go! I know this Secret Santa came a little late, but I hope you had a merry Christmas and that 2022 will be a blast for you! <3
