TANK MAN
This photograph was taken on 5th June 1989, the man in this photograph has stopped still in front of four tanks, something you think would of have taken a lot of thought to do. The man in this photograph has shopping bags, therefore he obvioulsy did not plan to do this today. By standing in front of the tanks he is standing up to his country, showing them that the public do not want this to happen. He is an extremely brave man for standing in front of four tanks. The tanks tried to move around him but as they moved he moved, blocking their way out, saying to his government that they have to go through him if they want to continue. The interesting point with this photograph was that it was taken in China, but you will not be able to find the image in China, the government made it disappear. They do not want people of China to see a photograph of a single man standing up to the government. The man that photograph this image had to smuggle the film roll out of China through a tea bag. The photograph was then on every front page in the world, showing everyone what has happened. The image then got reposted and reposted, but the image still means the same, therefore making it iconic, yet in China you are unable to see this image.Â

This photograph shows what it was like for people in the 1960s. The authorities  are holding weapons towards their face, they are wearing protective amor, almost like they are scared. The other people in this image is men of all colour some of them wearing a sign around their body saying âI AM A MANâ. The white person in this image isn't wearing, is that because he does not need to tell the authorities this? do the others need to wear it to make it clear what gender they are? No, they are wearing the signs to show that they are all the same. They are all male, they have all the same parts so they shouldn't be treated any differently. The men walking in the middle of the image do not look like they have weapons on them. This photograph shows us that there is still a problem today, as this image has been reposted. By reposting the image you are making it iconic, people are able to relate to this image now just like in 1960s. Because equality is still an issue today.Â

This photograph from the TIME magazine shows that there is still a problem with the black community and the police, by crossing out the date 1968 and replacing it with 2015 shows that nothing has changed. People are still being treated the same because of their skin colour. The photograph shows a coloured man running away from the police, as you can see by the image there are much more police men to the man. The man doesnât look like he has done anything wrong. This is the cover of a magazine, by putting it as the cover more people will see the image and see that nothing has changed since 1968. People of the civil rights movement started marches to get equality within America. African Americans wanted the same rights as white people living in America.

The Flaneur- Walking through the City.
Notes-
- The male gaze. Explaining how in the past, the working class women were able to walk at night without being the subject of the male gaze. Whereas if the lady was flamboyant she couldn't walk at night because she would become the subject of the male gaze.
- There was a curfew put into places because people would say that if you was out at night you was up to no good. Therefore they introduced a curfew to stop people walking at night.
- different to now as shops are open all night and even restaurants are open 24/7. They even say some cities never sleep.Â
- The flaneur (Definition) a man that walks around observing the city.Â
- Women would dress up as men to not be the subject of the male gaze.Â

This image of the young boy having a flag taken from him from a while male police officer. There is violence in this photograph from a police officer to a child. The child isnât holding a gun or a knife is he holding a flag that represents his country. The police officer is trying to take that away, just like the law has taken away his rights as an American boy. The police officer next to him has a sign saying, âNO MORE POLICE BRUTALITYâ, having that sign in this images shows that nothing has changed from the protest, as a police officer is brutality taking a flag of a young boy. There is another person behind the little boy with her are out, by having her arms out she is showing that she hasnât done anything wrong, maybe defending the boy. These images show how people were treated at these protests, the protests were about the civil rights movement.

Genfell Tower + Walking in Salford
The Genfell tower reading is an article, whereas the walking in Salford is more of a piece of writing. The Genfell tower article is about how the public are using social media to view there opinions on the what has happened at the tower and how many lives have been lost. A video has been posted and shared many times online, highlighting what actually happened and what people should do to make it not happened again, the public are giving advice to the government about how to keep people safe. In the video a man is talking to a sky news reporter about what the government need to do. In the video the man says that the government don't see the community of people that live in these flats/ apartments, instead they just see the appearance of the building, they just want to make it look pretty, not caring about what they use. The people that live in these plates have made a community, they have a family, friends and lives. In the Salford reading he talks about how he felt he couldn't take photographs of the area, he felt as he didn't fit in to the community that had been created around the area. Whereas people that went to visit Genfell tower didn't feel bothered at all that they were taking selfies of where people have died. Â Photographing this horrible event that happened in the community. In the reading about Salford he talks about a play area that has been taken down by the council, the swings have been cut off, even that gate was sealed shut. There isn't anything left of the play area, just like Genfell tower. They are similar because they were both made by the government, but the difference of them is how the social media has showed both of these places. There is nothing on social media about the council taking the play park down, yet there is a lot of media coverage about the tower. He had said he felt uncomfortable taking images around the play area, where as at Genfell tower is has almost become a tourist attraction. Because the media has showed a lot of coverages about the tower people think it is acceptable to take photographs or even selfies around the building.Â

Ways Of Seeing- John Berger.
Notes-
By photographing a painting, people were able to see the painting at any time, even having the image up in there house.Â
The images are able to come to you, you are able to see the details, able to get close to the image. It makes the image more accessible towards the public.
Whereas in painting the painter was able to paint what the client wanted, in photographs you can document the truth behind the person, show all its detail.
You was able to make people look more wealthy.
Music can change the way you feel about pictures, the photograph may have slow music which could make you feel sad, maybe confused about what is happened. The music could be fast and would make you feel anxious about the picture.Â
Photograph show the what other people see of us, whereas a painting shows what we want others to see.Â

ICONIC IMAGES
This photograph was taken 9th September 2001, this photograph was on the front of most of the news papers the day after the 9/11 attack. This photograph relates to the image âRaising the flag on Mount Suribachiâ. This image became very popular after the attack as people were able to relate to the image from 1945 when the country came together again after the war. In the image it looks like the firefighters are trying to rebuilding things around the flag, saying that it is the main point to raise high. The public were able to identify the men as firefighters, putting there lives in dangers to save the country. Therefore the images are similar as it men in it that are serving the country like the soldiers. The country were able to show togetherness again in this image.Â

ICONS
This image of the soldiers raising the flag is iconic because of how people have perceived it. The public view the images as the country coming together, to achieve something together. In these images there was more than one photograph taken of the scene, but only one has become iconic. The other image was of the man standing in front of the flag, but that image was not as affective. For this image to become iconic the image needed to have emotional value towards the image. The iconic image becomes a metaphor, this photograph has shown togetherness, which people can relate to this image. An iconic image should be able to travel the world and have the same affect on everyone, whether that is to show happiness or saddest. Photographs need to have an impact on the world for years to make the image iconic. Over time this image of the men holding the flag has been recreated over and over again to remind everyone what this photograph means to the country. This photograph shows power, unity, freedom, victory and tells a story. People are able to bond around the photograph.Â

This photograph of a protest from 1963 shows a girl being attacked by a police dog. The woman in this image isn't doing anything wrong, she isn't holding a weapon but it still being attack by a dog. This photograph supports the argument because the black lives matter movement has become more and more popular over the years and they referred to this image to show that the protest for black lives is still happening.

This photograph from the Charlottesville protest shows the extremes within the protest. The group of people on the right side of the image havenât got any weapon (that we can see) and have âblack lives matterâ on their clothing. Whereas the man on the left side of the photograph is carrying a gun, in the protest there were people opening walking around with powerful weapons. The man is holding the weapon like he is ready to use it, this could have been very intimidating. The man with the gun is wearing a tshirt with the KKK flag on it, this tells us that he is a white supremacist. This photograph shows the different sides of the protest. The protest was originally for the removal of the statue of Robert E Lee. Robert E Lee is a confederate icon, he was a part of the slavery ban. Him and many other parts of American did not want the slavery of African people to be abolished. The movement was the main cause of the American Civil War. The day before the protest people were chanting âwhite lives matterâ like âblack lives matterâ. The protest then turned violent when protesters clashed with the public that did not agree with their protest. The Charlottesville attack is like the black lives movement as they are both groups of people that believe in different things, protesting their views, but at black lives matter protest it is normally the police that the protester have a conflict with, at the Charlottesville attack, it was other member of the public (believing in different things) that the protesters had a conflict with. The media are calling the attack a white nationalist rally.Â

BLACK LIVES MATTER
ââThe sight of a police officer interacting with a member of the public causes a significant if unknown number of Americans to reach for their cell phones and start recording, just in case. It isnât that they believe all cops to be abusive or dishonestââjust enough to warrant vigilance. âTake your phone out, take your phone out!â a Georgia resident told a companion as they watched Sergeant Michael Bongiovanni of Gwinnett County Police Department. He was standing by a sedan during a traffic stop.
This is known because the companion had already begun recording the encounter on her own. Itâs lucky they were suspicious. Demetrius Hollins, 21, suddenly emerged from the sedan with both hands up. And Sgt. Bongiovanni slugged him in the head.ââ

This text corresponds to a video, in the video there is a police officer that punches as man with his hand up in self-defence. Demetrius Hollins has been stopped on the side of the road by the police officer, in the video you can see the police officer being aggressive inside of his car, Hollins emerges with both hands in the air showing he has nothing on him, as Hollins is getting out of the car the police officer punches Hollins across the face while both of his hands are still in the air, while doing that he is then crushed into the car. The text suggests that if an American sees a police officer with a member of the public they automatically take out their mobile phones and start recording the incident. The public have this idea of recording the situation from the media and past experiences, posting them on social media for everyone to see. Video evidence is very important in police reports as it shows the true story of what happened, by the public recording incidents that involve the police and the black community and posting it on social media has made the black lives matter movement much more viewed by others around the world, not just what the police or news says about the incident. This text provides evidence that the public will video incidents for them to been seen by everyone, they video the incidents to provide proof of what has happened.

RECKLESS EYE BALLING
Before the civil rights movement there was a law that didnât allow black men to look at white women, if doing so they could become imprisoned. Because black people were not seen as powerful, the authorities were able to do this. Seeing that this is the way black people were treated before the movement showed how much they needed the movement. Upon reading about the subject I was unable to find out lots of information, but I have found news articles from the past 10 years stating that the police in American and still trying to arrest people for looking at them a certain way. People have even been killed by the authorities for reckless eyeballing. Reckless eye balling people would say that it is when you are looking a woman up and down and are calling it a visual rape. There are even stamps that show a powerful man looking over his workers, in the past it was called eye service. Eye service is that you cannot look at the overseer but the overseer can look at you, saying that you cannot look at someone with more power than you but they can look at you. If you looked at the overseer you would be shot.

This photograph of three young famers was taken by August Sander. This image is in black and white because of the time it was taken. It was taken using a large format, glass plate camera with a long exposure time. The boys in the photograph would have had to be very still for this image to taken. Â The camera used is manly for portraits but this image was taken outside in a natural environment. The boyâs bodies are facing away from the camera but they are looking directly at the camera. The famers are dressed in smart clothes; they are standing behind each other in single file. The man on the left has hair poking out of his hat and cigarette in this mouth. The men are holding canes. The men look like they are on their way to a dance or something similar, as normally farmers will be dressed in their work clothes. This photograph was used in Sanderâs portrait book âFace of our Timeâ polished in 1929.

This photograph of Kate Moss isnât usually what we her look like. This photograph was taken by Chuck Close in 2011. Kate Moss is a very well-known model; she has done varies cover for magazines like Vogue, W and Vanity fair. In the magazine cover she is always covered in makeup and glamorous clothes. In the image that Chuck Close produced she isnât in the latest clothes of a set of false lashes, he has stripped her down to nothing, no make, not perfect hair and not the latest clothes trend. This image shows us that models arenât prefect but are human, everyone has flaws and we have a real life Photoshop to cover it up. You can see her freckles and moles on her face. You can see her bangs under her eyes and her fine lines around her mouth. I think this is creative as it has changed how people will think of her, showing us she is a real woman not with perfect skin. Most of the images that Chuck Close has produced are of celebrities stripped down to their natural form.

There is a photograph of Boulevard de Temple in Paris that is the first photograph to capture a person. This photograph was taken by Louis Daguerre in 1838. Louis Daguerre was a French artist and photographers around 1800âs. The photograph is of a busy street in Paris. Daguerre created the daguerreotype process of photography. The daguerreotype process was the first photography process, for almost 20 years it was used and was most commonly used. In the 1838 photographs didn't include people and carts as the daguerreotype process used around a 10-minute exposure time, depending on the light. Therefore because of the exposure time it was almost impossible to have a person in the image, until this images were created. The people in the photograph do not know they have been photographed, they do not know they are the first people to be captured by a camera. The street looks almost empty; at the time this would have been a very bust street with people going about their day. In the left hand corner of the image there is a man having his shoes polished, the man was still enough to be captured by the camera, because the photograph is in black and white the people have created a silhouettes, which makes it difficult to spot them. This photograph makes you realise how far photography has come, less than 2000 years ago it was difficult to capture a person in your image, now you can take photographs of people at high speed but freezing them in time with using a fast shutter speed.
