Astrology, the Basics
“Wait, so i’m not just an Aries?!”
No, you’re not. In fact none of us are just one anything. So let’s dial it back to day we were born. The stars and planets in the sky aligned to convey a story completely unique to you, and thus your natal chart was born!
Our Sun sign
“Playboi, what’s a Sun Sign?”
Well, the Sun Sign is the sign everyone typically knows about themselves. It’s the sign you were born under that immediately correlates with your birthday. Meaning, “I was born in April so I’m a Taurus!” Your sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on the day of your birth. So what does the sun represent in astrology? Our vitality and ego, “who we are.” The thing about the Sun is we’re constantly growing into ourselves and our egos, constantly learning ourselves and strengths, so we’re constantly growing into our Suns. Many people write off astrology due to their inability to relate to their Sun signs when so much more goes into a person. Your Sun sign is less “who i am” and more so “who i’m becoming.” And sometimes we never fully become the poster child of our Sun signs because we grow at different rates and resonate with different things, not to mention the housing of the Sun plays a heavy role in how our “egos” will play out. Also aspects made to our Sun by other planets are most important as they shape our Sun’s characteristics, but that’s another post!
Our Moon Sign
“…okay, so I understand Sun Signs now, but what’s a moon sign?”
The moon sign in astrology is of immense importance. This is where we feel most comfortable and secure and our primal emotional reactions. As I mentioned previously, the sun is “who we’re becoming’’ while the moon can be defined as “who we always are.” Unlike the Sun who illuminates everything, the moon is a softer, dimmer light. It lights up the dark sky at night and it does the same for our personal dark sky emotionally. Simply put, the moon is our emotions. Emotions can be simply irrational and erratic, so we suppress them because throwing a hissy fit in public is not that endearing. My point being that our moons can sometimes be overlooked by others as well as our selves because the attributes of our moons are highly subconscious at times. The moon is how we were nourished, and in turn how we nourish others. It’s an extremely sentimental and personal part of our being. It’s what makes us feel safe as well as habitual patterns we carry. A balanced moon is very important as an unbalanced one can take a toll on us physically. When the needs our moon requires aren’t met, we can start to display it’s negative attributes and fall into a bit of a depression, eat less, and never leave your bed. Or perhaps become more aggressive and angry depending on your moon sign. It’s also equally important to understand that others around us have different moon placements then us natally. Everyone requires different things to feel emotionally secure, sometimes we’re harder on others because their love languages differ from our own.
Our Mercury Sign
“What does Mercury have to do with anything?”
Well, everything. Mercury rules over the mind, how we think, how fast we think, how we learn, our speech, and even our style of writing. He’s the fastest moving planet in the solar system so it’s fitting that he rules the nervous system. The poor guy gets glossed over a lot until he turns retrograde and everyone starts running around like chickens missing their heads because that’s when we notice most how strong Mercury’s influence is on our lives. Mercury is not an emotional planet but more so an intellectual one. It’s how we asses things and use logic before we act, if we use logic before we act.
Our Venus Sign
“I KNOW THIS ONE…LOVE RIGHT?”
You’ve guessed it, Venus rules over romance but a lot more as well. She’s our social graces, if we have any social graces at all. How we charm others as well as what we personally find pleasurable. Venus rules over our attitude towards money and material things. How much we spend and how often we treat ourselves. What we like to eat, what tastes good, what feels good. Venus is also our attractiveness, and what we’re attracted to. She gives us a clue to our love language on a more superficial level, what it takes to woo us. How we like to be seduced and pursued. Venus is diplomatic, she shows us how we make peace with others. Venus also rules over artistry and how appreciate the arts and even the possibility of having artistic gifts as well. Venus also highlights our sexual nature in terms of what we find pleasurable, what feels right, and what we find acceptable.
Our Mars Sign
“Mars is our…anger?”
He can be, yes. After all he is the God of War. Mars in astrology represents energy. Our physical energy and vitality, and especially our sexual energy. He’s all about action, what it physically takes us to do…well, anything. He’s our day to day strength and drive. He exemplifies how aggressive and assertive we are. Our ambitions, durability, temperament, action, and drive. Do we exercise? How sexual are we? Our sexual style? Our competitiveness? All can be answered by our mars sign. Mars showcases how quick we are to anger, what makes us tick/explode. He’s also the last of the personal planets.
Our Jupiter Sign
“……”
Jupiter is the first non personal planet as it stays in the same for an entire year. Everyone born within that year will have the same Jupiter sign. That doesn’t negate Jupiter’s importance in anyway, so don’t skim over him. It just means we have take a closer look at him in our natal chart by examining his house placement and aspects made towards him by other planets. Jupiter rules over good fortune, philosophy, travel, and higher level learning (different from mercury.) He is expansive and optimistic. He’s a grand catalyst to spiritual growth. He’s where we overindulge, our generosity, and wisdom.
Our Saturn Sign
“So what does Saturn do?”
Saturn is like our astrological father. He sets the rules and regulations, the routine. And like when we disobey our paternal father there’s consequences the same applies for Saturn. Saturn is not out to punish anyone, he just returns anything we put out into the universe. “What goes around comes around.” Sound familiar? Saturn rules over Karma. Saturn in our chart shows us where he grounds us, where we must be held responsible, where we must work hard. Our careers, the practicality of how we achieve success.
Our Uranus Sign
“and Uranus?”
Uranus is a much slower moving planet. His energy is very erratic, spontaneous, and rebellious. He’s extremely progressive and an advocate for originality. Uranus has to be looked at by house placement to determine its effects on us individually, as people from the same generation will share the same Uranus sign. Uranus in our charts will show us where we are unpredictable and rebellious. How and where we go against the grain. Our humanitarian side. How interested in activism we are, where we are liberated ourselves.
Our Neptune Sign
“that Sea God?”
Indeed. Neptune is the God of the Sea. In astrology Neptune rules over spirituality, all things hazy, confusion, love and romance on a deeper, ethereal level. He is illusions and our dreams. Intuition and psychic abilities. Neptune has dominion over deeper creativity and artistic abilities. He also shows us where we might try to escape reality and what we may try to use to escape reality with. He is addiction, substance abuse, and deception. Our fantasies.
Our Pluto Sign
“isn’t Pluto like not even a planet anymore?”
Yes, technically Pluto is a planetoid, but we still refer to Pluto as a planet in astrology so he will be respected as such! Despite his small size and the grand amount of distance he is from us his effects are undeniable.Pluto in our charts shows us where we are transformed and regenerated. Where we must die to be born again. His energy is very subconscious, we don’t always see it, but we feel it. He is obsession, and our hunger for power, where we struggle for power. He is how we react to sex on a deeper, subconscious level. Where and what we become drawn and attached to. His energy is very primal. He also highlights where we’re manipulative or jealous if we’re displaying the negative attributes of Pluto.
Our Ascendant Sign
“our…what sign?”
Our Ascendant sign is crowned the ruler of our chart, and is of equal importance as our Sun and Moon signs. It’s specific to our birth time and location. The Ascendant is like the mask we put on to face the world. It’s our initial reaction to external forces. The lens we see life through on a day to day basis. Our ascendant is our physical bodies, how we look and how we act in public. It’s how people initially receive you, our first impressions, our mannerisms. Our outer personality. If people were to describe you they’d likely describe this sign.
So, as you can see a lot goes into a persons personality even more than what’s been mentioned above, humans are complex beings who can’t be described as just one sign, or one anything. We are more than our sun signs, we are more than signs period.

Quote
You have the blood of a poet. You have that and always will. You show, in the middle of savage things (that I like), the gentleness of your heart, that is so full of pain and light.

Regarding the manifold worts of Weather-Charming
Presented above are Pearly Everlasting Anaphalis Margaritacea (top right), and Wild Peony Paeonia Mascula (bottom centre).
Many are the worts capable of assisting the witch in the task of weather-witching. These plants have long been held in high esteem for the act of charming the Genii of wind, earth, sky, and sea. Their use underlines an ongoing intimacy with the land on which the witch treads. Here are a few:
Sage, the leaves of which may be buried in sealed vessel, together with the seed of man. The whole should be watered with water from a church, above which prayers and incantations for nefarious inundations or beneficial rains shall be whispered.
Everlasting, collected on Ascension Day (May 10th), may become the chief herb of power in the weather-working witch’s arsenal. Its powdered flowers then become a powerful tool for the command of clouds, as well as for protection from lightning.
Rowan, the small twigs of which should be ceremonially bound to twigs of ash and pine pitch, creating a bundle which may be burned to summon mists or fog.
Tobacco, cured and dried, can be cast upon waters whilst invoking gods of storms, or yet again its stems burnt to empower prayers for rain.
Ferns, all of which are allied unto the Genii of storm and rain. Leaves should be ground to dust, forming the greater mass of rain-bringing incenses. Brake specifically, may summon violent storms if taken in offence, or threatened with an iron blade. Otherwise, fetishes and incenses made of the Sword-Fern Polystichum hold strong power over winds.
Paeony, the roots of which, once dried and carved may be employed as utterly menacing tempest-bringing fetishes. These idols should be anointed with rain or storm water, and prayed to for rains, storms, winds and clouds. The same can be said of all False Hellebores. The creation of such fetishes may be as simple or elaborate as you would like, with differing results. I recommend having a look at this post on Alraun by my friend @ofwoodandbone if you are to delve into this realm.

Magickal Folk Names for Herbs
Having knowledge of herbs and plants (either magically or medicinally) during the Middle Ages, often was reason enough to accuse a woman of being a “witch,” so there is no doubt some of the country folk at the time took these herbal folk names literal. Chances are, these names were used merely as descriptors to help remember them easier. Most plants were given names descriptive of their uses and others were given names for something they generally resembled. Spells written by witches in ancient times were often written with such descriptors, which personally i believe to be a form of secret coding.
Here is a small list of “witchy” herb names (most of these are already floating around the community) that you can use in your craft when you create your spells. This list could be a great addition to any Grimoire and i hope you find them as useful as i do.
Enjoy ~~~ Cannawitch

Spring Flowers
Spring is almost here and our gardens begin to grow and bloom. The plants that we grow can be used been used in magic and have been for hundreds of years. Flowers, in particular, are often connected with a variety of magical uses. Now that spring is here, keep an eye out for some of these flowers around you, and consider the different magical applications they might have. And maybe even use them in your Spring Magic!
Crocus
These flowers are usually one of the first you will see and they are associated with newly blooming love. They are also known to enhance visions and bring about intuitive dreams.
Daffodil
Daffodil petals are typically found in shades of white, yellow or even pale orange. This flower is associated with love and fertility. Place fresh ones in your home to bring about abundance. Wear this flower close to your heart to draw love and luck. Place daffodils on your altar during workings related to love, especially if it’s a new relationship and you’re still trying to figure out how to navigate the waters. Add potted daffodil bulbs to your altar for spring celebrations (don’t worry if they’re not blooming yet), along with other spring flowers such as forsythia, crocus, and snowdrops.
Dandelion
The leaf of the dandelion is used for healing, purification, and ritual cleansing. The bright yellow flowers can be used in divination or placed in a sachet to draw good energy your way. In some magical belief systems, the dandelion is associated with growth and transformation; after all, a few dandelion flowers soon turn into hundreds of seeds waiting to travel around to repopulate. There’s also a connection to moving on: If you’ve got a bad habit you want to get rid of, associate it with a dandelion puff, and then blow it out away from you.
Echinacea
Also called purple cone flower, this garden mainstay adds a little bit of magical “oomph” to charms and sachets. Use it for prosperity related workings: Burn the dried flowers in incense, and use on your altar during rituals.
Goldenseal
This sunny yellow flower is often found growing in the wild, alongside roads, and in fields. Use it in money spells, or for business dealings. Work it into charms connected to matters of financial gain or legal issues.
Hibiscus
This flower was named for Hyakinthos, a Greek divine hero who was beloved by Apollo, so it’s sometimes considered the patron herb of homosexual men.
Hyacinth is also known to promote peaceful sleep, and guards against nightmares. Carry in an amulet to help heal a broken heart or to ease grief when a loved one dies.
LillyThe Easter lily or Tiger lily is associated with all kinds of spring connections: fertility, rebirth, renewal, and abundance.
TulipThe tulip appears in many different colours and varieties but is typically connected to prosperity. You can use the different coloured variations in colour magic: Use a dark strain such as Queen of the Night for full moon rituals, or bright red flowers for love magic.
Violet
In Roman myth, the first violet sprung from the spilled blood of the god Attis, who killed himself for Cybele, the mother goddess.
However, today the violet is associated with tranquillity and peace. The leaf offers protection from evil and can be sewn into a pillow or sachet. Carry the petals with you to bring about luck and enhance night time magic. These pretty purple flowers are everywhere in the spring and early summer, so it’s a perfect opportunity to do a bit of flower magic. Dry the flowers in the sun, and use them in an incense blend to bring about sweet dreams and restful sleep. You may even want to sew them into a pillow like our Dream Pillow. The violet is also associated with dedication and loyalty. If you want your lover to be constant and true, offer a bundle of violets as a gift or plant a patch in front of the person’s home.
Remember that some plants can be toxic to pets. Before you plant or pick any of these, be sure to check to make sure it won’t be harmful to your furry companions.
Love and Light,
Moon Magick www.moonmaagick.co.uk

Choosing an herbalist.
How to choose a herbalist?
Herbalists are highly trained specialists using herbal medicine for healing and preventive medicine. Human Resources Development Canada says professional herbalists must have at least three years of training, between 300 and 500 hours of a supervised clinic practice at an accredited college and individual association membership.
Chartered Herbalist (CH): trained for one year on the basics of herbology. Many go on to become master or clinical herbalists. They do not work in clinical settings but can be herbal business owners, health food store consultants, writers, workshop leaders and product distributors.
Master Herbalist (MH): trained exclusively in herbology for one year, with completion of a major thesis. Master herbalists often write books and articles but do not have clinical practices. However, some may be clinical herbalists who’ve graduated before the official clinical herbalist designation was created by the American Herbalists Guild in 1989.
Clinical Herbal Therapist (CHT) or Clinical Herbalist (Cl.H): professional designations requiring three- or four-year full-time training, with practicum (physicians take two- or three-year training). Clinical herbalism is highly advanced, combining the use of medicinal plants, nutritional science and natural health practices. Clinical herbalist assess the health and case history of a client, perform physical exams, use diagnosis techniques and interpret lab results. They can set up clinical practices.
Clinical Registered Herbal Practitioner (Cl.RHP): membership with the Canadian Herbalists Association of BC.
Diploma of the School of Phytotherapy (DipPhyt): a highly respected herbalist college in the United Kingdom.
Medical Herbalist (MH): same letters as master herbalist – the UK equivalent of CHT or CL.H. Member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalist (MNIMH) in the UK.
How can Herbal Medicine help me?
Herbs offer you a wide range of safe and effective therapy that you can use to: Prevent disease Treat disease Maximize one’s health potential Symptomatic relief of minor ailments Many conditions respond well to herbal remedies such as: Stress related conditions Digestive conditions Respiratory ailments Skin complaints Hormonal imbalances (menstrual, menopause) Infertility Childhood illnesses
How effective are herbs?
The success of herbal treatment depends on a variety of factors including: how long the condition has existed, the severity of the condition, but most important of all is how diligently the treatment protocol is followed by the person. Normally one can see results in 2 to 3 weeks, but it may take up to several months to clear a chronic condition. In most cases remedies are custom formulated for each individual client.
What illnesses can be treated with herbs?
While a cure is never guaranteed, herbs can be effective in treating many conditions ranging from acute things like tonsillitis and infections to more chronic things like eczema, bronchitis and arthritis. There are really no illnesses where herbs can not offer at least some relief.
How long will it take?
There is no single simple answer to this question. Really it depends very much on the individual and on the nature of the illness. Generally speaking, the longer you have been sick the longer it will take to regain your health. As a general guideline, you could expect to see some improvement within 2 to 3 weeks and to have significant results within 2 to 3 months.
What form do the remedies take?
Herbalists use a wide range of plant based materials for internal and external use. Preparations such as tinctures, fluid extracts, syrups, capsules and creams are all produced to a very high standard.
Do I have to stop taking medication from my doctor? (meaning a good herbalist will not recommend any herbs to interfere, for those confused)-A
No, you are not asked to stop current medication, and the herbs will not interfere in any way with the effects of your prescription drugs. When you are better your M.D. will decide if you should cease your medication.
Do I have to have my doctors permission to take herbs?
No, you are free to seek health care wherever you wish, but it is usually a good idea to let your doctor know what you are doing so that he/she and the herbalist can work together for the greater good of you, the patient.
Are the herbal remedies safe?
Plants have been used as medicines for thousands of years and any side effects have been well documented and are well known. Herbs are gentle but very effective in returning balance to the systems.
Herbs should be used with great care and respect. Although they have very few side effects, self-medication is not recommended as there is the potential of interaction with other medications. A Medical Herbalist is a highly qualified and trained practitioner in both orthodox and herbal medicine and should be consulted to avoid any unpleasant experiences with herbalism. Given under the supervision of a trained herbal practitioner, the remedies are completely safe. They have no side effects and no cumulative effects. Herbs are natural, non-invasive, and work in harmony with the body’s own healing powers.
Consulting a Medical Herbalist/Clinical herbalist
Medical Herbalists are trained in the same diagnostic skills as orthodox doctors but take a more holistic approach to illness. Your first consultation may last up to 1 ½ hrs. during which time the Medical Herbalist will take a full case history, discuss your past and present medical history, lifestyle, medications, diet and family medical history. Certain assessments such as pulse, blood pressure and urine samples may be required (consult information is confidential). My philosophy is to treat the whole person rather than treating a disease. At the end of the consultation I will discuss the treatment plan which may include dietary changes, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes as well as a herbal prescription. Follow-up consults are usually 45 min. Most Herbal Medicines are given in a form of a liquid tincture and taken in teaspoonful doses. Your tincture will be made up of a number of different herbs, chosen individually for each patient. Additionally some dry herbs for teas, as well as ointments, creams or tablets may be used. Herbal Medicine treats each patient as an individual, recognizing that no two persons respond equally to treatment.
How often will I have to come?
Your second visit is usually 2 or 3 weeks after the first, and following this, visits will be at 3, 4 or 6 week intervals depending on the needs of the individual.
How much does it cost?
Herbal remedies and visits to the herbalist are not covered by any health care plans. The first visit will cost you $50 – $150 depending on the experience of the practitioner and lasts usually 1 ½ hrs. Follow up consultations are $40 to $60, and last from ¾ hr to 1 hr The remedies are extra and work out to around $15 to $18 per week.
“Let your food be your Medicine"Available for consultations, herbal seminars, Skype consultations, and house calls.

Take Everything You Know About Sigils and Add One Step: forget it
Below are the operations of Sigil Work (a common form of Chaos Magic):
The sentence of desire must be formulated and written down in capital letters. Why capitals? They provide more structure for your sigil shape with more straight lines than lowercase letters
Repeated letters are deleted so that every letter will be used but once. Why delete? It simplifies the final sigil shape by keeping the amount lines/shapes to a minimum.
All letters of the whole sentence are combined into one general sigil OR several parts of the sentence are sigilized into several single sigils then combined into one general sigil. Why? To make the actual sigil
The sigil is internalized/activated. Internalizing should be done by staring at your sigil in a sort of trance, either during a state of euphoria, ecstasy, fatigue, or a simple meditative state. It is taught that just internalizing your sigil will activate it, but you can activate/charge it by really any means possible. Why? This is what plants your sigil into your unconscious
The sigil is banished and forgotten. This can be done by immediately distracting yourself upon removing the sigil from your sight. Why? so that it can obey its encoded direction in the unconscious mind without hindrance from the concision mind
Step 5 is not necessary if you decide against it, but it is very rarely found in “Tumblr Sigil Craft”. And Step 4 is almost never enforced. This post is to provide you with that lost piece of information to allow you to choose your own direction when practicing sigil magic. If this final step resonates with you, please practice it! It’s an incredible tool that will help you gain results with your sigils when done effectively. But if you feel that your particular sigil will work best when kept clear in the conscious mind, go right ahead with it. As much as the final step is stressed in “traditional” Chaos Magic, it is also important to remember that the authors of sigil craft literature encourage your own adaptations of your witchcraft as well. Some quotes by Frater UD include: 1. “Dare to experiment, make changes where you feel they may be necessary, and always aspire to develop your own techniques and methods.” 2. “place your trust in your feelings (i.e., your intuition) rather than in rules which other magician’s have set up according to their own subjective biases” 3. “In Spare’s system there are no ‘correct’ or ‘incorrect’ sigils; neither is there a list of ready-made symbols. It is of no import whether the sigil is a ‘correct’ one or not, but it is crucial that is has been created by the magician and is therefore meaningful to [them].”
Additional Tips For Sigil Craft you may not have heard before
”Formulating the sentence of desire and drawing the sigil should be done with the utmost concentration. It makes the following activation (“charging”) much easier.”
“You should keep your operation secret. For discussing it…may dissolve the sigil’s power.”
“negative formulas are usually not properly comprehended by the unconscious” Avoid words like “not” or “never” in your sentence of desire
“Sigil magic is primarily success magic. It aims at achieving very tangible and verifiable results. Accordingly, sentences of will should be concrete and specific.”
Specify a time limit for your sigil within your sentence of desire (a day, a month, a year, a car-ride)
“it is advisable…for you to place a border round the sigil, either in the form of a triangle, circle, square, or something similar. This…makes it easier to concentrate on the sigil when charging it. [And] it gives the sigil a ‘definitive’ and ‘conclusive’ touch, for if you work a lot with sigils, occasionally you may find the sigils becoming ‘entangled’ in your unconscious to form undesirable chains and combinations.”
Decorate/stylize your sigil to add a “magic touch”
Sigils can also be constructed through a pictorial method by sketching your desires, simplifying them to shapes and lines, and stylizing (decorating) it as you would with the word method
The Concept Behind Sigils and Their Success is that because of their unrefined image, they will appear to our unconscious and remain there. “Everything which reminds us of the times of amateurish handicraft will awaken primordial impulses in our reptilian brain. This will virtually automatically liberate the magical power in this section of the brain or awaken it in the first place.” Also “Mandala structures will awaken and activate archetypal material in the unconscious.” Which is another reason why it is advisable to put a border around your sigil. Creating and activating a sigil to manifest your desires is putting all your faith into your unconscious.
Notes On Following Through With Step 5 of the Sigil Process
“There are three parts to the operation of a sigil. The sigil is constructed, the sigil is lost to the mind, the sigil is charged.” (Peter J. Carroll)
You can also banish a sigil by keeping it in one spot and getting used to it until you no longer perceive it consciously
”Don’t use them lazily or heedlessly. This could definitely be dangerous! At the beginning you will need perhaps a quarter of an hour or so for your first individual sigil, but by your fifth or sixth sigil it will take you only a couple of minutes. This effort will certainly prove to be worthwhile if you consider the probably success. … With some experience, you will have finished the whole operation, including activation and subsequent banishing, within less than five to ten minutes. There is no faster way- even in magic!”
“It is of prime importance not to bring back the meaning and aim of the sigil into consciousness at any time.”
“It is recommended…that you should not spend too much time consciously creating a sigil. This is because…it will be much more difficult to forget the sigil’s outline and contents or to push it out of the consciousness, which is so essential for its proper working.”
“If sigils or sentences of desire unexpectedly pop up into consciousness, recharge and banish them again. Most of the time, it’s enough to simply distract your attention”
“A record should be kept of all work with sigils but not in such a way as to cause conscious deliberation over the sigilized desire.” So like a running list of dates on which you created/activated a sigil without specifics of the process or desire itself
What is Chaos Magic? A system of magic that focuses on personal symbolism rather than a traditional system.

Swamp Magick
This is a post about what I’ve learned from living in the swamps of the south in regards to making magick. I was born and spent most of my life just outside of the Florida Everglades and then lived in Savannah, GA for five years which is bordered largely by swamps. Your land will always inform your practice, the swamps are mine.
I also want to say before I start that I’m mostly traditional in my ways, which is why the land is so important to me. This may not be the case for everybody. So don’t take what I’m saying as a generalization.
For this post I’m going to be talking about Swamp Magick that specifically relates to the Southeast region of the United States.
History & Lore
Swamp Magick isn’t so much like, one specific thing, but really exists as sort of a spiritual paradigm I guess? It’s often also referred to as Folk, Bayou, or Conjure Magick although all three have slight distinctions and connotations (Conjure is very closely tied to Hoodoo but in certain cases I’ve heard other folks describe their practice as conjure as well). I’m going to say that to really understand Swamp Magick, of the southern variety at least, you absolutely have to be willing to acknowledge its ties to Native American practices, Voodoo, Hoodoo, and in many cases the magick of Appalachia. More so than being just a southern thing, a lot of Swamp Magick is regionally specific to Louisiana. Basically, depending on where you live, your rites and traditions are going to be different.
Another thing that I find important to bring up is that there are a lot of aspects of Swamp/Bayou/Conjure Magick that I absolutely will not include in my practice due to their appropriative nature of a closed religion. (Someone posted something once, possibly @witches-ofcolor, that while you can learn Voodoo and Hoodoo as a white person, if you find someone willing to teach you, you should do a shit load of research and think carefully about the reasons behind why you want to.)
I’ve always found that the magick folk I’ve met who are of the swamps tend to be far less, I’m not exactly sure how to put this, less European in their ways of thinking and practicing. Not that it isn’t there but what I mean by that is that there tends to be a lot less Wiccan, Hermetic, Abrahamic etc… influence in most people. This goes back to what I was saying before, even though not all of the influences are drawing exclusively from Root Work and Voodoo, the influence is extraordinarily present. (Note: Hoodoo and Voodoo each have their own western influences, but those have been distilled over the years and are not really what I’m talking about here.)
General characteristics of Swamp Magick (doesn’t really apply to my personal practice so much)
Often geared toward curses (sending & breaking) or healing
Lots of working with spirits and the dead
Comprehensive use of sacrifice (No, not going out and killing a goat…always)
Exists heavily in the oral tradition (If someone’s momma didn’t tell ‘em how to do it, their grandmama did)
There is never just one way to do something (Applies to most paths in some way or another, not just the swampy stuff)
Cross Roads Rituals (The Devil Went Down to Georgia kinda deal, lol deal, get it?)
Items commonly used in Swamp Magick
Swamp Water - Great for cursing and keeping things away from you Swamp Mud - Kind of the opposite effect of Swamp Water, great for healing and causing change Red Brick Dust - Super great for protective workings Goofer Dust - The two essentials for goofer dust in my mind are Graveyard Dirt and Snakeskin, anything else can be added for specificity and potency. Great for hexes and cursing, but can adapt to being protective depending on what’s in it. Bones - Obvious, you can use them for whatever you want really, the swamp just has a heavy correspondence with death &decay Resources
I actually don’t have a lot of great scholarly resources for Swamp Magick specifically, at least not the variety that I work in. Everything I know I’ve either taught myself or learned from somebody else. (If anyone does know of any solid resources please please please send them my way)
But for more traditional Southern Folk Magick here are some great ones:
Hoodoo and Conjure Quarterly, Volume 1, Issue 2: A Journal of New Orleans Voodoo, Hoodoo, Southern Folk Magic and Folklore
Conjure in African American Society
Literally any book by Zora Neale Hurston (they’re mostly fiction but like, REAL)
Final Note: If you are racist in any capacity, Swamp Magick isn’t for you so fuck off.
