Character Design Analysis: Chibiusa
Chibiusa’s entire design, truth be told, is to make her resemble a pink rabbit.
Naoko Takeuchi originally tried to make Usagi look like a rabbit (evidenced in her hairstyle) as a reference to an Eastern folklore figure, the rabbit on the moon. However, Naoko expressed disappointment that she was not able to convey this. Eager to try again, she transferred the design over to Usagi’s daughter, Chibiusa.
Chibiusa’s odango (hair buns) give the impression of rabbit ears. This, coupled with her red eyes, makes her resemble a pink rabbit.
Going off on that, an ongoing debate that has been going on ever since Chibiusa first appeared is this: Why is her hair pink?
If we want to go on strictly factual reasons, the biggest one has already been stated above. Naoko wanted Chibiusa to resemble a pink rabbit (as she loves the color pink).
However, we can also see some explanations within the story itself. First of all, it’s very likely her hair is the result of genetics. Her grandmother, Ikuko Tsukino, was often drawn with pink hair in the manga (whereas it’s purple in the anime)
Also, Naoko originally wanted Usagi to have pink hair.
We can delve even deeper into this by once again looking at Chibiusa’s lineage. She’s a member of the Moon Matriarchy. Her “abnormal” features could trace back to that. In addition her other grandmother, Queen Serenity, was often shown to have lavender-silver hair.
All in all, not only was Chibiusa’s design supposed to be reminiscent of a pink rabbit, it also may have been used to indicate that she is a member of the Silver Millenium lineage.
