Spain, the colonial power did nothing to defend the territory nor it’s people.

The UN set up a mission in 1991 to hold a referendum on the status of Western Sahara.

Several calls to include Human Rights surveillance in MINURSO’s mandate have been made by organizations such as HRW and Amnesty in face of abuses by Moroccan Forces.

Such claims have never been addressed.

Western Sahara territory and waters are rich in phosphates and fish. 

The EU Court of Justice sentenced that Morocco’s exploitation of resources in Western Sahara is illegal as it does not benefit the inhabitants of the land, among others. However Morocco continues to exploit resources with Europe’s connivance.
