Rescuer thinking victim isn't grateful and feeling like their efforts are wasted, only to find victim crying alone saying they can't take not knowing anymore, what rescuer is going to ask for in return.

Oh absolutely. This is one of my favorite things.

Whumpee singing to stay sane

Content: emotional abuse, implied beating, verbal abuse, captivity, slavery

They have a random, completely unrelated song that they sing as loudly as possible when whumper starts gaslighting and guilt-tripping

As whumper turns away, whumpee lifts their bloody body a few inches off the floor and sings in a smiling monotone, "all in all you're just another... Brick in the wall." (Pink Floyd - The Wall)

Whumper going from "you think thats funny?" "You sound like a kangaroo" to "stop singing!" Kicking whumpee every time they sing

*sings in french* "what the fuck did you just say to me whumpee?!"

Sings a really niche song alone and when they're around whumper they only hum it to stay strong... That way whumper doesn't know just how rebellious the words of that song are.

Weak voice echoing down the dungeon corridors... "I'm covering my ears like a kid; when your words mean nothing I go 'la-la-la', I'm turning off the volume when you speak; if my heart can't stop it, I'll find a way to rock it like a beat" (naughty boy by sam smith)

Add to that one, whumpee whispers the refrain that's just a rhythmic "la-la," etc, every time whumper starts telling them what they're going to do to the victim.

Defiant victim that yells "you can make me your slave, but you'll never rule my mind!" So often that it becomes a chant which becomes music that they dare to hum when the rage is too much to bear

♡ Whump Plot Structures ♡

This was inspired by a post about sickfic plot structure that I saw at one point...I can't find it though, unfortunately. I'll credit it if anyone knows what I'm talking about! But I wanted to contribute some whump ideas of my own.

Pure Recovery Arc: We begin with whumpee at their lowest. Whumpee is getting better over the course of the story. Obstacles may arise, but they do not build on each other - each one is just overcome, and then on to the next. It often feels efficient and satisfying, like things falling into place. Every new sentence offers a relief. There is no pyramid structure and no climax - rather, this structure can be thought of as pure falling action. Relaxing to read. May read almost like a checked-off to-do list.

Rocky Recovery Arc: We begin with whumpee at their lowest. Whumpee is getting better over the course of the story, but there are frequent downturns leading to mini-climaxes along the way as whumpee overcomes each one. We're never certain if they're going to make a full recovery or not. Tension builds to a climax in which their recovery or downfall is solidified. Classic pyramid structure.

Trauma Arc and Recovery Arc: The story is divided into two acts - the first focuses on increasing trauma that builds up to a climax in which whumpee can't take it anymore and at that moment, either escapes or is rescued. The second portion of the story focuses on their increasing progress towards recovery, leading up to a second climax in which they fully overcome what they've been through (perhaps by arriving at a lesson, by getting revenge, etc.). The first and second halves can echo or mirror each other in poetic ways.

Trauma, Admission, and Recovery Arc: This is the same as above, except the story is divided into three acts. Again, the first focuses on increasing trauma building up to escape. But this time, whumpee can't talk about what happened to them or can't admit they need help after what they've been through. The second act is devoted to them spiraling until they're forced to admit their pain at the climax. Then, a third act focused on their attempts to recover can begin. Again, these acts can echo or mirror each other in poetic ways.

Buildup to Breakdown: This follows a Fichtean Curve. Every time it seems like things are getting better, a new obstacle is added to the pile. The stakes just keep getting higher - more injuries are added, they get sicker, more bad things happen. Eventually, a climax is reached in which whumpee's problems must all be faced at once, and they may succeed or fail, followed by the consequences of that.

No Conflict/Flat: Whumpee is at the same level of pain throughout the story. We're just seeing a detailed description of their pain and/or the comfort that they're experiencing. It stays roughly the same the whole time. Good for fluff fics...or for a scene of whumpee just wallowing, or sitting through torture. Often feels dreamlike and outside of time.

Caretaker is a creature that feeds on others’ pain - not in the sense of causing it, but in the sense of truly eating that pain. They visit from time to time, when things are particularly unendurable, and leave whumpee blissfully numb. Whumpee has such an unfortunate life…no one has ever fed Caretaker so well. And whumpee has never experienced such an effective painkiller.

I’m not usually one for conditioned whumpees, and especially not for recovery, but I think I would really enjoy those types of scenes more if the trauma responses were allowed to be more nuanced and complex.

This isn’t a criticism of anyone specific, it’s just something I think I lack in the community, and I don’t think I’m the one to write it either, but I think that what puts me off is that I know what it’s like to be triggered by something, and it’s such a complicated and not always conscious process.

Like yes they might feel that someone they’re with is angry or upset with them and suddenly try to do anything they can to please them, but that might come with a wave of shame and self loathing once they’ve realised that nothing was wrong and they’ve just embarrassed themselves in front of someone close to them.

Or maybe they’re scared of that part of themself, and they’re so scared that other people will see it or hurt them again that they push them away, maybe they test their boundaries, maybe they hurt the people they love instead because they want to see what happens when they finally do get angry.

Maybe they hate that part of them that makes them become someone else, that makes them get lost in their mind. Maybe they resent how it makes relationships hard, how they try to move on but some small thing ignites a carefully buried spark of fear and the whole thing starts again.

I also wish there wasn’t so much of a power dynamic of whumpee and caretaker, where the whumpee is someone who is mentally ill and traumatised and not expected to ever be independent or live alone. No, I want them to have friends and partners and lovers, and struggle and find joy in equal measure, on their own terms.

There’s absolutely people writing this sort of content, and there are things I will read because I think they capture that complexity, and of course these are my personal feelings but I do urge people to think about this when they write, if they want to.

The High Priestess circled her kneeling form, her furry boots silent on the wooden structure. The only indication of her still walking was the soft jingle of her jewellery.

"The Order has been underperforming."

"Yes, Holy Mother."

"Why is that?"

Crow resisted the urge to shift uncomfortably. The Order of the Sacred Birds was her responsibility, that much was true, but she couldn't control how many outsiders would try to get in. A quota of however many strangers killed was almost impossible to satisfy month by month, year by year.

"The birds are completing all of their duties. Even as a mother, that's all I can ensure. If they don't encounter—"

"Mother Crow."

The High Priestess hooked a finger under her chin and tipped her head up, forcing her to look into the eyes hidden behind the bear mask. Crow went silent as a corpse.

Maybe she would become one by the end of the night.

"I need bodies, and the Order is my supplier." She leaned down, her grip on Crow's jaw becoming more firm. "Fix it," she hissed. "Get those bodies from somewhere."

"Yes, Holy Mother. The Order will comply."

Whump prompts I can’t get enough of:

1. The shifty and embarrassed look in a stoic leader’s eyes as they finally are forced to reveal an injury to their friends, reluctantly allowing themselves to be treated for the first time. The awkwardness as they strip, and/or lay down to be examined. The subtle fighting to maintain some choice or control ( would rather sit up, “I can do that myself thanks”) and so on.

2. The limp warmth of a Whumpee’s sleeping body as they are treated in the middle of the night. The change in their breathing as the covers are gently pulled back. The clumsiness of their movements as they flit in and out of sleep, sudden gasps or flinching as their wounds are tended. The caretaker’s whispers of comfort, hushing them back to sleep.

3. Whumpee lashing out in sudden rage at some petty action of another, before collapsing and breaking down in sobs. Everyone standing around awkwardly in shock, before caretaker goes in to grab whumpee in a crushing embrace, trying to calm their shaking.

4. Stoic whumpee being humiliated by Whumper. Orders like: ‘strip’, ‘face the wall’, ‘kneel’, ‘down on your hands and knees’, etc etc.

5. Slightly delusional whumpee being tied/held down for some potentially lifesaving procedure and quietly begging caretaker to stop, please please stop. Then more loudly, desperately, until they are crying out and fighting in a panic. Caretaker meanwhile is (1)staring at them in stoic silence while their heart is wrung with pity, or (2) they are quietly reassuring them, telling them it’s going to be alright.
