Kirk flicks his eyes up toward McCoy, then back down to his monitor. Four crew members dead--several more injured--because he'd made a bad call, because he'd misread the situation... because he didn't have the experience most Starfleet captains had, or at least that was what Starfleet Command would say.

Thing is, he can't think of anything he could've done differently. Putting up shields earlier would've been seen as a sign of aggression, and they'd been trying to avoid conflict. For all the good that had done.

He blows out a breath and finally leans back, pinching the bridge of his nose. He knows McCoy has gotten just as little rest as he has, given how many people had come through the sickbay.

"I know, Bones." And he appreciates it, although it's not easy to say that. Finally, he grins unhappily. "Hope you never regret that.

MCCOY: Should we, I don't know, fire back? KIRK: No. MCCOY: Of course not.

Jim narrows his eyes thoughtfully, trying to decipher the subtleties of Spock's response. Because that's one thing he's learned about Spock; he never just says something. Even when he's direct to the point of insubordination, there's a way he raises an eyebrow or crosses his arms or shifts his posture just a little bit that gives some kind of context.

Maybe Jim's just used to people with a wider range of facial expressions. Or maybe he doesn't always give a shit what people are trying to say if they won't come out and say it.

"This isn't something going on a report, Spock." Although maybe Spock would be more forthcoming on a report. "It's not about what I need to do. It's about..."

What is he going to say? Friendship? Is he going to admit that he is worried, because he knows pretty damn well what it feels like to press trauma down until it's so compact inside you it turns into a black hole that you try to fill with alcohol and fistfights?

Okay, maybe that last part was projection. But still.

"You just seem off. It's not like you. And chalk it up to me being nosy."

Jim is tempted, regardless of whether or not it's a good idea, to shoot first and deal with whatever the consequences are later. But the ship shakes again, and...

His crew. He can't just stun this person when they might be keeping all of them alive. Maybe after.

"Don't get this twisted," he says as he takes the helm to try to maneuver them out of this. "Fuck you still... But do you want to tell me what the hell is going on?"

Angel waves the hand not currently on a control panel. 'Advanced' had been underselling things. They were almost jealous.

"Right now, I'm not really stealing it. More trying to keep it in the sky while you were off--" A quick glance, and if they weren't busy they'd throw in a theatrical wince. "--getting that pretty face beat in, apparently."

Look, they're not really expecting to talk their way out of this one. But they are hoping that the famous Captain Kirk has his priorities straight. Hard to shoot them out of the chair if they're both space debris, after all.

Jim tilts his head, smiling coldly. "If you could arrange for it, you already would be. I mean, you're superior, right? Except, if you were, we'd probably be on opposite sides of this forcefield."

It's not as satisfying as he wants it to be. What he wants, what he really wants, is to have a couple of drinks and beat the shit out of Khan. He wants to feel the physical sensation of his fist slamming into Khan's face. He knows that'd let everyone down who thinks he became a better person the day Christopher Pike found him and convinced him to go to the Academy.

But Christopher Pike is dead.

The problem is, if he did let Khan out, he knows he wouldn't win a fight. Khan is stronger on a good day, and this isn't a good day for Jim. His whole body is on fire. And maybe he does want to lose. Maybe he wanted to lose in the first place, and maybe that's why he wound up dead. Maybe he's a zombie now and Khan is the shotgun that'll put him down.

"You know what I think?" His tone shifts to conversational, but he's clenching a fist. "I don't think you even care about them. I think what you care about is having followers. And who else would follow you but a bunch of science experiments in the wrong time?"

STANDING ACROSS OF HIM is the look of a man who is searching for the satisfaction of inflicting pain by means of words. He can feel his temper rise to it, seething quietly in the back of his head. Khan has met many men, both good and bad. He has known martyrs and their selfless sacrifices, brave in the face of death for their cause.

Above all, he knows cowards best.

The still angry wounds, dressed not long ago by the looks of them, littering the visible parts of Kirk's flesh speak to Khan. He is here, he deduces, against any wise advice. They are humans to the very end, driven by their hearts.

What has he to lose now?

Impossibly, Khan steps closer. His jaws clench, the edges of his lips stretching into a humorless smile.

"Does my pain vindicate yours, Captain?" he asks, the drag of his words mocking a faint threat. "I can arrange for it, if you would like to know how it feels."
