The World of Locations: The Hobbit
3rd Station: Marlborough - Hobbits in wine barrels
There was no filming here, but "the one ring" was created in this city. Jeweller Jens Hansen made several prototypes of the famous film jewellery in 1999. In the shop of the same name, replicas of the one ring are still sold today. It remains sad that Hansen died a short time later and thus never had the opportunity to see his finished work on the big screen. First you can head for Harcourt Park northeast of the capital.
On the set of "sanatoriums" at Grabowsee
You will then travel to the Weta Studios, where a guided tour will give you an insight into the world of the film industry.
If you want to explore it, a visit to Queenstown is a must.
>/ul> Then board a helicopter and experience a 40-minute scenic flight over Kepler Mire, where Frodo and Sam walked through the Dead Swamps. Explore the wild beauty ofTongariro National Park. Read more about campervan hire New Zealand here. In the morning you will board the Interislander Ferry to the South Island, including your rental car. Via the Cook Waterway and the famous Marlborough Sounds you reach the small harbour town of Picton. You can explore it by boat (duration approx. 45 min). If your desired vehicle is not listed here, please send us a short message. Have a look at the "One Ring" in the shop of Jens Hansen - The Ringmaker in Nelson. If you don't have 3 weeks or more time for a "Lord of the Rings" tour over North and South Island, I can also restrict you to the "Lord of the Rings" highlights of the South Island. On a 2 hour tour, visit the film set of the Hobbit Village, Hobbiton. During your tour you will see the Hobbit Caves (from the outside), "The Green Dragon Inn", the "Party Tree" and many other highlights. Originally the film set was not intended to become a tourist attraction. After shooting of the Lord of the Rings parts the film set was dismantled.
