sketch + lineart zoomy!

for everyone who has commented on my crowley studies wanting to try tracing for themselves, i have advice!! the best technique i've worked out from tracing refs is to use a really big brush to do any actual tracing, then switch to referencing your own sketch when you start adding details. (here’s a similar method that roughs out even less detail)

using a big ass brush stops you getting distracted by all the details of a photo or 3d asset that make it difficult to stylise later. it makes you focus on proportion and placement, which you can then build on with more detailed sketches later. i've started using a chunky brush for all my sketches, traced or not (see: crowley's hair & the cartoon) because it also makes it easier to block out general shapes and improve the overall composition 👏

(note: using a tiny brush and purposefully focusing on etching out all the details is still a really helpful way to learn a character's face tho, and is what i did here)
