Erica coughed, failing to smother a laugh. âWell, Iâm no longer decomposing in the dirt. I know some people might disagree but, personally, I see that as an improvement.â
Erica eyed the mermaid from what she could see above the rippling waves. âWhat about you? What brings you to the shore?â From what Erica had been told most of the mermaids still kept to the water. Deepwater.
.
Ryn looked over at the shore as she was asked, swimming a little more towards it. âI am with a human, Ben. And my daughter goes to school, so I stay here with her. Let her learn about humans and mermaids. To be both parts.â She explained as best she could. âIt is... scary. For her to be here with all the bad that happens here.â

While Magnus had been pretty busy with his position as a council member he wasnât going to shrink away from his usual gig of setting wards for those who wanted an extra strength in security. There was after all a sense of protection in political standards but there was also a more hands on method that he enjoyed. Stepping out of the portal he created he looks around the room, taking in the aura of the place as he fixes his jacket. âKnock knock, Darling. I donât suppose Iâm early but I am at least Iâm not late.â
@theunveilingreblogâ
.
Since the carnival, Ryn had been keeping herself to herself, leaving the house only for work, and being very hesitant about leaving her daughter for long. But the girl missed going to school, and she knew that unless she mixed more with humans, she wouldnât find a healthy balance between land and sea. It had therefore been through word of mouth that she happened to arrange for Magnus to come to her home.
âHello, yes.â She nodded, stepping forward, watching him carefully. âYou are a warlock? You can help protect my family?â

At the sight of the mermaid sniffing at the air, Erica pressed her lips together in an attempt to smother a smile. Did she look like that when she was trying to catch a scent? Erica could only hope she was slightly more subtle in pubic, if only for her safety.Â
Erica pushed her wet hair out of her face. âIâm not.â It was easy, telling such things to someone else so other, like her. âWerewolf, actually.â She trod the water, the familiar motions helping her warm blood to continue to flow to the tips of her extremities. âResurrected wolf, Iâve noticed it makes me smell different than most.âÂ
.
âAh. That makes sense.â She nodded. She hadnât wanted to mention the odd, permeating scent of death that was around her - it was hard to tell in the water, but it was definitely there. âYou are... better now?â She asked, unsure if it was rude to ask someone whoâd come back to life that, or not.Â

Stiles watched her with a big grin, âI know right?â. As he waited for her to add in the cream cheese, he took a whisker and held it out to her. âDo you want to mix both together? Iâll start unwrapping the Reeseâs that weâre going to need later.â He noticed that more people kept glancing at what they were doing in varying degrees of skepticism but he didnât let this affect him and instead got started with the unwrapping.
.
Ryn saw the glances in her direction, but only hissed slightly at them, before carrying on what she was doing. It was definitely not what they were supposed to be making, but it was a lot more fun than whatever had been planned. âYes. I stir.â She nodded, stirring the mixture. âYou cook much? For family?â

Erica blinked rapidly under the waves. Only years of lectures and instances of her Papi scaring her kept the precious oxygen in her lungs. Erica hadnât expected to see a gorgeous shark woman upon her whimsical trip into the ocean. It was one thing to hear that mermaids were a thing it was another to see one.Â
Erica followed the graceful swimmer back to the surface, a gasp escaping her as her head broke through the waves. She pushed her blonde hair out of her eyes, pointedly ignoring how the breeze over the surface of the water made her wet skin suddenly, painfully chilled.Â
âErica.â she managed, clearing her throat. âYou werenât attacking me or anything, so itâs not a problem.â The she-wolf couldnât help admiring how the mermaidâs silver-gray scales glistened, shining ever so lightly in the pale winter light.Â
.
Ryn nodded once, seeing the other was looking at her, but not reacting - sheâd shown just as much curiosity about humans when she was staying with Ben and Maddie, so she understood. âI only attack when Iâm threatened. You were just swimming.â She shrugged, tilting her head at the other. âI worried youâd drown.âÂ
She sniffed the air now that the other had surfaced, catching a non-human scent on the other. âWhat are you? You are not human.â She noted, watching the other with curiosity as well now.

Nashuja smiled, thinking of those she called her children.
âMany. One in particular lives in this town too, which is a lovely treat. His name is Seamus Bennett, he runs a distillery here.â
Hearing about the mermaidâs issues with mating, Nashuja made a mental note to make inquiries within the Authority to see what intel they had. There might be some way she or someone else could help them; it seemed a good window for forming a solid alliance. Â
The warlock shook her head, reaching to hold one of Rynâs hands. âLove is never a bore to listen to. Iâm sorry to hear that you lost him, and that even returned there was still something gone. HereâŚâ
Nashuja rummaged through her bag to find a pen and a note pad. On it she scribbled her phone number and email, and tore it off to give Ryn.
âHereâs a way to contact me, for that lunch out, but also for your beloved. Iâm always here if you need help, and believe me when I say Iâve experience in fixing that which is broken in some way.â
.
Ryn looked down at the telephone number, nodding, before she pulled her phone out of her pocket, keying in the number, then calling it, so that the other could have her number to. Itâd been something sheâd learnt from watching Jerry, though she was reminded of the times that she was assured that he wasnât the best role model to copy.
âThere. You have my number too.â She said, satisfied. âI will talk to Ben. See if he will come see you for help. Thank you for the offer. Is very kind.â

âBoss man? I like that,â Stiles laughed as he gathered whatever she hadnât grabbed. âSo, pretty much what we need to do, is crush the sâmores and mix them with the cream cheese until they reach a dough like consistency. Iâm not really sure how much weâre going to need, so weâre just gonna have to wing this!â While he spoke, he got two zipable freezer bags. âLetâs just split the amount of sâmores between us because crushing them is the fun part, so we should both enjoy it!âÂ
đ§ââď¸
Ryn listened intently, watching what the man doing, before she took the back, doing as she was told, smashing the bag hard, hissing and jumping back a little as the force of her hit caused the back to split, but the sâmores were well and truly crushed, at least. âThat was a fun part.â She agreed, nodding, before pouring the contents into a bowl, and grabbing the cream cheese.Â

Isabelle sighed at her words, she wished she could help them. âYeah, I just thought you could have an idea of what could you do to have those memories backâ she said softly. âWell, at least even if he doesnât know you or her mother you both share that strong bond with the little girlâ she said softly, wanting to at least make the woman stop torturing herself. She seemed overwhelmed, she somehow could understand even if she had never found herself in that kind of situation. âI wish I could help you two with that, if you ever need my help I can look around to see what I findâ she assured as a warm smile appeared on her red lips.
.
Ryn nodded to herself. It hurt to not have Ben the way she was used to having him, but at least Hope had him. She had both her fathers, and they loved and cared for her. âYou would do that for me?â She said, raising her eyebrows. âThen I will do the same for you, Isabelle. If I can help you with anything.â

âMaybe you should make me the marshmallow chicken sometime. Iâm kinda curious now.â He laughed, âIâm sure that was a really good night.â He murmured softly as he looked up at her.Â
.
âI will try. Is hard to remember.â She said, smiling faintly, looking down as he looked up at her. It had started well, after all, before there were arguments. But she didnât want to remind him of them.Â

âSo you say.â Nashuja conceded, not about to start a fight about it.
Humans, in her experience, were either harmful or too stupid to be of harm. Those who qualified the latter were few and far between, as even idiotic Humans made for dangerous foes given violence was written into their DNA.
âExcellent! You seem like fantastic company, that is; you yourself, not just because of your species and its rarity,â Nashuja wanted it to be certain she was interested in Ryn for more than just that reason alone. Even if it meant that it wasnât strictly true. âYour daughter? Thatâs lovely, I have children too, but theyâre all grown now: some with children of their own.â
Prettier? Doubtful, Nashuja thought as she admired the woman.
âMagic, actually. This place has a magical pull to it that I find quite fascinating. Coming to America was a curiosity, but this town specifically was the Beacon aspect of Beacon Hills. Although, I wonât lie, the deceased returning is a wonder⌠What brings yourself ashore?â
.
âHow many children do you have?â She asked, curiously. âI just have Hope. The water is bad now... Itâs hard for us to mate naturally. We had to have the help of humans to make it happen.â She sighed, shaking her head, looking in the direction of the ocean. While she was pleased sheâd found a way that worked for her, it still made her worry about her species as a whole.Â
She weighed up explaining to the woman why she was ashore, but finally she nodded ahead of her, over to where Hope was with Ben. âI found love. But then he disappeared and I thought he was dead. But he came back to me... changed. And a little broken.â Her face fell a little, shaking her head. âI do not mean to bore you or complain.â

âNo, I donât want space. Space I think is the last thing I need. I was alone for too long, I donât want to be alone again.â He admitted, shifting closer to grab a plate. âThis looks great, Ryn.â He murmured as he pulled it towards him.
.
âThen... I stay.â She nodded, decisively, kissing the top of Benâs head once he sat down, grabbing her own plate as well, sitting opposite him in silence. âIs better than marshmallow chicken.â She decided, eventually.

As she saw the mermaid sitting on a bench the woman just walked close and took the place next to her. Isabelleâs smile became smaller as Ryn told her about Benâs mother, she felt bad for the woman, it must have been really hard to go through that on her own. To Isabelleâs mind, Benâs actions were incredibly brave, it was something she would have done if she had found herself in his position, she would have done anything for her family. âSo saving his mother brought him to this point, right?â she asked softly. âDo you think thereâs a way for all his memories to come back?â added the shadowhunter, somehow wanting to know if she could help her.
.
âYes, it did. He was told to stop, but it was too late. The cells were already changing him.â She explained. She hated that she didnât consider that it could be an option when there was no body found. Wondering if she shouldâve searched the ocean longer and harder for him. She frowned, looking at the floor as she tried to think if his memories could come back. âAm not a doctor, I donât know. He doesnât know his mother, or me. He knows my daughter. Knows he loves her. But everything else, itâs... fog.â

âRightly so,â Nashuja approved of their secrecy. âHumans have a difficult history.â
She wanted to say more. She wanted to let out all her feelings towards Humans to a being who just might understand, whoâd grown up with a suitable wariness and avoidance of the foul creatures. But tact was forever important.
Nashuja inclined her head in deep respect. âRyn, a strong name. Might I be so bold to invite you for drinks some time? Iâm new in this town, and havenât many friends as of yet. I am⌠wary of my Human colleagues; Iâm never quite sure if they laugh with me, or at me.â
The warlock hadnât let herself be ashamed of her scales in years, but since working at the mortuary Nashuja had noticed jokes being thrown around that had her biting back the urge to slay them. The latest had been a slinky snake toy on her desk.
.
âHumans are both good and bad. Some want to help my kind, others to hurt them. Study them. Just like mermaids. Everyone can be bad if they choose to be.â Ryn reasoned. Not to mention there being some people somewhere in the grey, like Xander, who had his moments out of fear of the unknown.
âYes, we can. I have been here a while, but I donât have many friends. My daughter has school friends, but I donât know their mothers. They like when Ben collects her better. They think he is prettier.â She glanced off into the distance, looking for Ben to make sure he was okay.
âWhat brought you to town? Is it the dead people coming back?â

Stiles grinned. This was going to be fun. âItâs not quite a cake but rather something I thought of a while ago and would like to try out now! Iâm sure your daughter is going to love it.â He kept the smile on his face. âFirst, we need some sâmores, cream cheese, Reeseâs cups, chocolate sauce and marshmallow fluff.â While he spoke he looked around to find what they needed. âJust grab whatever you can find, please and weâll get sorted.â
.
âYes. You are boss man.â She agreed, moving around the table to grab up the sweet snacks that heâd requested, grabbing some bars of chocolate as well while the people at the other tables just looked... concerned at what they were trying to do. Calmly she lay all the ingredients out, making a start at measuring them into little bowls. âWhat is the base made of?â

Isabelleâs eyebrows furrowed slightly when the mermaid told her what happened to Ben, she knew the possibility to became a shadowhunter by just drinking from the mortal cup, but she had never heard a human injecting themself mermaid cells to became one, she will have to investigate that fact. Isabelle maybe had been too long trying to figure out how a human became a mermaid, Rynâs words took her out of her trance. âOh, no, Iâm not boredâ she said shaking her head softly âI was thinking about you just told meâ admitted the raven-haired woman. âI never heard of anyone doing thatâ admitted Isabelle âDo you know the reason why he did that?â added the woman curiously.
.
She nodded, walking over to a bench and taking a seat, nodding for Izzy to do the same. It felt good, to be able to talk to someone else about these things for once. She wanted to help Ben, but she wasnât sure she was enough to be able to alone.Â
âHis mother was sick... Her legs didnât work. Then she got sicker, and my cells helped her. But... there were side effects. She breathed more underwater. So he wanted to see the effects. To test to know that sheâd be safe.âÂ

âWeâre gonna figure it out, Ryn. Weâre going to find where we stand, I.. I know that you want me to love you now, but I donâtâŚI donât know if I can, I want to remember what we used to be first.âÂ
.
"I know. It is pain, but I know.â Ryn nodded. As much as she wasnât a human, it felt strange to be hurt by things like this - by being face to face with a man who didnât remember the vows he exchanged with her. She switched the food off once it was cooked, dishing it onto the plate for them both. âI can give you space? If that makes things easier for you?â

âForgive my rudeness,â Nashuja shook her hand, smiling. âI just couldnât help admire you.â
The power this mermaid radiated felt more than just a regular mermaid. A regal poise to her that Nashuja felt akin to; although she knew little about the secretive culture mermaids had, she knew more than most and this woman felt like a queen.Â
âYour strength, it adorns you like a cape,â The warlock told Ryn. âitâs been many centuries since I last met a mermaid. That mermaid did not have the same impact you have⌠Allow me to introduce myself; I am Lady Nashuja, of the Eight. A warlock.â
An introduction like this ought to have happened in a formal hall, with a gift and an entourages. That was how it was done in the old days.
.
Ryn blinked a few times, not used to being told she was being admired. Her back straightened a little more, cautious, but not about to attack. After all, there were humans around, and she wouldnât have wanted to alarm any of them. Still, she wasnât used to people knowing what she was at a glance, unless it was another mermaid. And as the woman explained, she was no mermaid.
She nodded her head, respectfully. âHello. I am Ryn.â She said, her shoulders relaxing a little. âMy tribe stay in the water - most others do, for our survival. That is why you donât meet most. Humans are still not trusted.â The Unveiling had encouraged some, but none seemed to be as brazen as Ryn.
âIt is nice to meet you, Lady Nashuja.â
