The Last of Us II: THEORY

So I just finished watching the trailer, and oh fucking man. Am I EXCITED!!!

Here’s the thing I wanted to touch upon because everyone’s absolutely terrified for this new reveal and the new inquiries about a very obviously written death of a newly beloved character: Dina.

So, as far as we know, in all three trailers released, specifically the main two, it’s heavily implied that Dina’s death is inevitable. And, simply, I CALL BULLSHIT. 

We know how much Neil Druckmann, our man, cares about these characters. He puts every fiber of his being into these stories. And he promised us, remember? He said, word for word, “We’re gonna do right by you.”

But Druckmann is a sneaky little bastard! He loves tricking us into thinking one thing when it’s actually the complete opposite. And, honestly, I’m trying to find ANY hope I can that our lesbian babies are NOT separated. 

HERE’S WHY I THINK DINA WON’T BE KILLED OFF IN TLOU PART 2.

First of all, as I mentioned, in both trailers it’s heavily implied Dina dies. And as I also mentioned, we know that Druckmann loves to play dumb and lead us on and we fall for it every time.

But I have some propositions for all of you: How do we know it was Dina in that basement? How do we know she was killed off, for certain? How do we know Dina wasn’t captured?

You can’t tell me it isn’t impossible.

In the DLC, Ellie fell in love with her best friend, Riley, and they went on a whole adventure, yadda yadda yadda, you know the story. But, inevitably, Riley dies, and Ellie discovers her immunity to the disease. You mean to tell me they’re really gonna kill off another one of her lovers? I mean, come on. Not to mention: How much more obvious could that be! I mean, really, they couldn’t have put the plot more in our mouths. 

Let’s not forget about this gem. ^

There’s so much under the rug that we JUST don’t KNOW! 

Like I proposed, who knows if that was even Dina in the basement? There were a shit ton of patrols that went out all at once, all covering a different path, like Jesse said. Don’t forget: Ellie lost Dina, so she could’ve easily gone off course to search for her! So, when she went into the basement, who knows that it wasn’t Jesse or someone else down there?

And let’s say it was Dina, how do we know she died? Maybe they injured her, left her stuff but took her, and that’s why Ellie has her bracelet and is going to stop them? 

“Run your routes,” Jesse said. 

Everyone went to a specific area to secure the territory around Jackson. So who actually knows whether or not it was her down there? And we don’t have to assume she died, either, because what if Ellie gets knocked out, wakes up, finds Dina’s stuff, but no Dina? 

It’s possible.

Maybe Ellie found Dina’s bracelet somewhere else?

Do we really think Druckmann’s gonna kill off another one of Ellie’s girlfriends? I’m sure he’s aware of the whole “Bury Your Gays” thing, too. I believe him when he says he’s gonna do right by us, and I believe that means he won’t kill Dina in the process.

The entire thing is just far too obvious to be true.

Personally, I believe Dina was captured by the bandits, rogues, or whatever they are, her stuff was left behind – including her bracelet – and she was taken. I believe that Ellie takes the bracelet, and runs off to kill them off and save Dina. I think Joel knows how much Ellie cares about her, and I think that’s why he’s so eager to help. He would never want to see his daughter in pain, and wants her to be happy. Joel knows revenge isn’t the answer, remember?

As of right now, we’re way too left in the dark to really know for sure whether our beloved Dina dies or not. 

It’s for certain that she and Ellie have a romantic thing going on, and I’m hoping, at least, if in the end, she does die, we get to see Ellie happy and in love while it lasts. Because as we know, Ellie’s head over heels for this girl! And our baby girl deserves some rest and love, we know she earned it. And Druckmann knows it, too.

Thanks for reading! I know this was a little disorganized because of all the ideas I put down, but honestly I’m just firing shots in the dark here. Maybe I can go a bit more in-depth later on, and hopefully this eased a few frantic minds and opened some worried heads up to some other ideas!

Because at the end of the day, we know Druckmann. We know Naughty Dog. We’ve known them for a vast portion of our childhoods and our early adulthoods. Ellie is our baby just as much as she’s Druckmann’s baby. And we don’t know much at all about the new game, but I can tell you for sure that I’m excited.

But they better not kill off my baby’s girlfriend or I’ll come for Naughty Dog’s life.
