Untainted Affections (Kanetsugu x MC)

She was lying under the newly fallen darkness, embraced in the now cold arms of the late Uesugi. Dried up tears stained her cheeks as somewhere she kept searching for warmth in the stilled bosom of her lost love. She knew he will not respond to her anymore. The fading scent of sandalwood haunted her senses.
“We were supposed to die together…” she murmured coldly, her lips hovering over his, her eyes ice cold from the pain.
Her fingers traced all over his features as if trying to memorize every inch of them for the last time.
The sound of the hoofs came nearer as she grabbed his kimono with shaky hands, never wanting to let go. The door slid open as the most faithful friend, or that is what she called him, Kanetsugu walked in, the other retainers following. She let go of the corpse knowing that holding onto him was useless. She sat there, legs tucked underneath, her head lowered, hair fallen over her face hiding her worn out features. She sat quietly, without looking up even once as the retainers covered Lord Kenshin’s body and carried it out of the chambers.
“Milady.” Kanegutsu said softy, an expression of sorrow covering his face.
He knelt down in front of Lady Uesugi’s frozen form.
“Milady, we need to go.”
She nodded, her eyes fixed at the floor and struggled to stand up on her feet. Supporting herself against the wall she walked out, Kanetsugu by her side.
……………….. time skip …………………
It has been a week since the demise of Uesugi Kenshin. Kakegatsu was doing a good job in taking over his place with the help of Kanetsugu and Kageie. Kanetsugu, Kageie, Kagetsugu, Yoshichi and the retainers were present in the hall as Kakegatsu spoke. Lady Uesugi was standing across him, her eyes fixed on the floor, emotionless.
“I will make sure you reach Kyoto safely.” Kakegatsu told her in a kind voice. “It must be hard for you without Lord Kenshin. But I will make sure to see to your safety till the end on his behalf milady.”
“Thank you milord.” She whispered under her breath bowing deeply.
“Kanetsugu and Yoshichi will accompany you tomorrow to your home.”
She nodded and turned to leave. Everyone’s eyes were fixed on her. No one wanted her to leave. But there was no option either. She barely spoke a word after the death of Lord Kenshin. It was after all the best decision for her to return to Kyoto.
She reached to the door of the hall and collapsed onto the floor. Everybody gasped and Kanetsugu rushed to her. She was unconscious.
“Kanetsugu, please see to her recovery.” Kakegatsu told him in a worried tone.
“I will milord.” Kanetsugu bowed.
Then he cradled her figure in his arms walking out of the hall.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
It was evening. She was still lying down unconscious in her room as Kanetsugu, Kageie, Yoshichi and Kagetsugu spoke with the doctor. They all looked sad as they walked out of her room.
“We can’t keep her here can we?” Yoshichi asked sadly as the doctor left.
“You know the rules Yoshichi. Someone has to take her in if she stays here.” Kageie replied in his obvious tone. “ She is Lord Kenshin’s woman. And we do not know yet what she wants.” Kageie lowered his voice. “Especially now that she is carrying his child.”
It was soon after the meeting, Kanetsugu walked over to her chambers. Sliding the door open he walked in slowly, his eyes fixed on her as she sat against the wall knitting something. Her face was still as low, not bothering to look up as Kanetsugu entered. He was indeed relieved to see her awake and active.
“How are you feeling now milady?” Kanetsugu asked kindly sitting across her.
She silently nodded, not bothering to look up.
“I trust that you will feel better when you return to Kyoto.” He spoke softly. “I will make sure you get home the first thing tomorrow morning.”
He got up and turned.
“Lord Kanetsugu…” she called in a shaky voice.
He startled and looked back at her who was kneeling at his feet, shaking, her head against the floor, her hands grasping the end of his hakama.
“I do not.. I do not want to go!” She sobbed, her tear drops wetting the floor.
……………………. to be contd. ………………………..
“Milady!” Kanetsugu exclaimed, his eyes wide in surprise as he knelt down before her. He grabbed her shoulders lifting her up gently.
“What are you doing?!” He asked her in a soft tone. “Please! Don’t bow before me!”
She shook her head, tears running down her cheeks.
“I … I am carrying Lord Kenshin’s child.” She spoke in a shaky voice amidst her sobbing.
“I want his child to grow up where his father lived!” She wrapped her arms around herself, shaking and crying even more.
Kanetsugu stared at her surprised, running at a loss for words. It has been a very long time she expressed her emotions, keeping aside the fact that she even spoke so much.
“But milady…” He spoke softly.
“Please take me in Lord Kanetsugu!” She grabbed the collar of his hakama and cried burying her face in his chest. “Please let me serve you…” She sobbed in his chest.
Kanetsugu sat there frozen and surprised at the sudden plea from the very woman he respected with all his heart as Lord Kenshin’s.
“I beg you Lord Kanetsugu.” She bowed before him once again, her head against the floor.
“S..Stop that!” Kanetsugu raised his voice there for a second.
The next moment, the Lady Uesugi was in his arms, against his broad chest. He hugged her tightly.
“Your wish is my command.” He whispered.
They could hear footsteps rushing close to the chambers. Kanetsugu did not bother to let go of her from his embrace.
“Is everything al…..” Yoshichi barged in sliding the door open followed by Kageie and Kagetsugu. They stood there dumbstruck at the sight before them.
Kanetsugu gently released the embrace and stood up facing them.
“I am taking her in.” He declared.
They looked at him surprised, their eyes wide and jaws dropped.
“I just need to talk to Kakegatsu.” He turned to the lady.
“Y/n, get ready.”
Finally she looked up at him, a ghost of smile forming on her tear stained features.
“Yes milord.” She nodded.
Kanetsugu smiled at her sheepishly as the others exchanged glances.
………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Kakegatsu sat in the hall, surrounded by the retainers as usual. Kanetsugu and y/n aka Lady Uesugi sitting across him.
“Milord, I have made a decision.” Kanetsugu declared. “I want to take in y/n as my wife if you may allow.” He bowed.
Murmurs of the retainers filled the hall.
“Its my plea.” Y/n added in a soft tone, bowing.
Kakegatsu smiled. He looked relieved.
“Very well. We shall celebrate this joyous occasion together.”
“Milord!” Kanetsugu and y/n exclaimed in unison, then blushed and looked at each other.
“Arrange for the best of food and sake!” Kakegatsu ordered his retainers. “We shall celebrate tomorrow!”
With that the meeting dispersed. Kanetsugu and y/n bowed deeply to Kakegatsu.
“I shall be forever grateful to you Lord Kakegatsu.” y/n told him.
Kakegatsu shook his head and smiled. “This is the least I can do for you milady. Its an honor.”
“You are very kind.” Kanetsugu smiled. “Thank you milord.”
“Well I guess we yet have one person to talk to.” y/n smiled at Kanetsugu.
“Ai will be glad to have you.” He replied.
“Father!”
Kanetsugu and y/n turned around to see Ai running towards them happily. She jumped into Kanetsugu’s arms.
“Father, someone told me you found momma!” She exclaimed.
Kanetsugu’s eyes widened at bit as he looked at the door. Kageie looked at him with a knowing smile. He smiled and looked back at Ai.
“Yes Ai. I finally found your mother.” He smiled and looked at y/n. “Here she is.”
Y/n blushed and smiled. Ai gasped.
“Lady Kenshin is my mother?!” She blinked looking confused.
Kanetsugu laughed. “Yes. She is your long lost mother. Lord Kenshin was just protecting her in secret.”
Ai jumped off from his arms and hugged y/n tightly. “Momma!! I missed you!”
Y/n blushed and smiled as the brim of her eyes filled with tears. She knelt in front of her and hugged her back.
“I am sorry Ai.” She whispered. “I am here now, and I will never leave you.” Y/n assured her as everyone watched with a smile on their faces.
………………….. to be contd. …………………….
It had already been 7 months since the wedding. Since Lady Uesugi became Lady Naoe.
“Its almost time!” Yoshichi exclaimed.
“Can’t wait to welcome another young Naoe.” Kageie grinned looking at Kanetsugu who was blushing, yet looking worried.
“Don’t worry Kanetsugu. Your wife is a strong woman. She will do just fine.” Kageie commented looking at his face.
Kanetsugu glared at him.
“Gosh, you are giving me chills with that look.” Yoshichi joked.
Just then they heard the cry of the new born baby. They all looked towards the door. Ai came running out of nowhere.
“Papa! Do you hear that?!” She exclaimed.
Kanetsugu looked at her and smiled.
The door slid open as the maids allowed the men to enter.
Kanetsugu rushed to y/n who was laying on her side with the baby boy beside her.
“Your son is finally here milord.” Y/n smiled as Kanetsugu bent down and kissed her softly.
Then he took his new born son in his arms.
He had bright blue eyes just like his father. And even the dark blonde hair.
“My brother!!” Ai exclaimed running over to him.
“Young Kanetsusgu.” Smiled Yoshichi.
Kanetsugu shook his head.
“Kenshin.” He whispered earning a gasp from his wife.
She was staring at him surprised as he looked at her with a smile.
“Naoe Kenshin.” He smiled as he laid him back in the lap of the mother.
“Lord Kanetsugu.” Y/n whispered with an understanding smile, eyes shining with tears.
“I will make him into a man just like his father.” Kanetsugu spoke under his breath as he kissed y/n’s forehead.
……………………. time skip ………………………
Ai was sitting with young Kenshin in her lap. They were playing with stuffed dolls.
“Cant believe he’s already over an year old now.” Kaegeie smiled watching the kids as they played.
Kanetsugu smiled. Yoshichi and Kagetsugu joined them.
“Come to think of it, you have not yet slept with your wife have you?” Yoshichi asked out of the blue.
Kanetsugu blushed and glared at him.
“That’s right. We have to do something about it!” Kageie exclaimed at the sudden realization.
“Wh..What!?” Kanetsugu looked redder than ever.
“Of course. With Ai and young Kenshin around we can’t really expect them to get some privacy.” Kagetsugu smiled.
That’s when y/n aka Lady Naoe was passing through the verandah.
“Y/n!” Kageie called. “Great timing!”
“Hello Lord Kaegie.” Y/n smiled.
“We are sending you and Lord Kanetsugu to a holiday inn tomorrow.” He grinned. “Just the two of you.”
“Wh..What?!..” Y/n blushed, realizing what exactly they meant.
“Don’t worry, we will take care of the kids for a day.” He added as his grin widened.
“Oh well the honey moon has to be at some point.” Yoshichi said with a wide smile.
“I…I guess…” Y/n smiled lowering her gaze, blushing.
Kanetsugu looked at her surprised but soon his expression softened into a loving smile.
………………………………………………………………………….
The guys seem to always plan the best.
Hands and hearts roamed over each other’s, lips showered with kisses, eyes gazing into a new found flame that swore unfailing love of two young hearts.
“I love you. Until death do us apart.” He whispered, his lips hovering over hers.
“I love you too. Until death do us apart.” She smiled.
Their lips seal in a kiss of an unbreakable promise.
That dawn, the sun marked the life of a new beginning.
………………….. THE END …………………
