The Message of the First Christmas is the Same for Every Generation The time of the birth of Jesus, for which we celebrate Christmas, was a troubled time. We remain in troubled times today, and significant trouble remains in the land where Jesus was born. But Jesus birth brought good news and hope and that is the message we remember and take joy in every Christmas season. The first Christmas was a troubled time During the first Christmas, according to the Bible, a census was being taken so that Rome could tax all of Israel. “Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. this was the first census to take place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.” – Luke 2:1-2 Fear throughout the land All the people in the land of Israel had many reasons to be afraid, and more to fear than taxes. At the time, the Romans had taken over control of their country. King Herod ruled the land. Herod was a tyrant who would have people executed at will. In fact, the Bible tells us that after Jesus birth, Herod believed a new king was born that would replace him, so he tried to have every male child under two years of age killed to prevent this from happening (Matthew 2:16). Hope amid trouble Fear was gripping the land of Israel. The Bible tells us that shepherds were watching their sheep by night in the fields (Luke 2:7-8) when an angel of the Lord appeared to tell them the good news of Jesus’ birth. “Just then, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord!'” – Luke 2:9-11 The message of hope for us today During this and every Christmas, we need to remember that the message delivered by the angel of God in Luke 2:10 applies to us as well: “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people” https://www.instagram.com/p/BrF1_rGgf4NDFBZgpd3wPswcNLyP74wmtPjXCU0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uo1y03jwtlhs

"There is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its tender shoots will not cease. Though its roots may grow old in the earth, and its stump may die in the ground, yet at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth branches…."
Job 14:7-9 No, the title has nothing to do with the musical group, "The Bee Gee's but everything to do with growing deep in our love for the Lord by growing deep in His Word. The Bible says of believer's that we're like trees planted by the waters that spread our roots by the river (Jeremiah 17:8). We are told elsewhere to be rooted and grounded in love (Ephesians 3:17) and to be rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith (Colossians 2:7). Jesus warned of the danger of springing up quickly, but, having no roots, that ultimately we will wither away (Matthew 13:6). Personal Bible study and not merely devotional reading is the best way to grow our roots deeply in the Christian faith. There is an old saying that goes, "If you want shade today the best time to plant a shade tree was 25 years ago. The second best day is today." Studying the book of Job teaches us that life unfortunately doesn't always come at us in seasons and there are days when we need a safe place where we can find rest for our souls and the bible reminds us that the best place to find that is in God's Word allowing it to refresh us and restore us, to strengthen us and make possible enduring the storms of life that each of us will inevitably face. Make the Word of God part of your regular routine, discipline yourself to feed on the Word of God as you read and meditate on God's Word daily. You'll be glad you did as when you do you will be like a tree planted by rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in season (Psalm 1:3).
