So, these two pages from chapter 88 have been causing a lot of confusion due to inconsistent translations, and I've decided to set the record straight as best I can with the knowledge at my disposal.

Starting with the first page, this is where Mitsuki says that he and Eida are similar. In the next panel, he says: 「どうしてカワキを好きなのか。。。その理由が自分で分からない」

This is the first point where fan translations and the official VIZ translation differ. Fans generally seemed to agree that he's saying he doesn't understand why Eida loves Kawaki, while the official version has him say that he doesn't understand why he himself loves Kawaki.

And unfortunately, both of those are understandable translations. The first part of the sentence contains no indication of whether he's talking about himself or Eida; the most literal translation I can do is "Why is Kawaki loved... that reason, [I/you] don't understand."

The reason it's "I/you" is because he uses the word 自分 (jibun), which depending on context, can be equivalent to either "my" or "your." It's not really the same deal as 僕 (boku), Mitsuki's primary first-person indicator, which makes it extremely annoying to translate.

So, which is it? Well, as vague as it is, my best guess is actually based on the dialogue of the second page.

Thankfully, this one is much easier to answer. In the largest panel, Eida says: 「あたし達。。。超恋バナしてるね」

The conversation around this line seemed to be, "she clearly said they're talking about romantic love!" "No, she's just using a slang term akin to 'girl talk,' so she only means that they're bonding!" And guess what? They're both right!

I consulted a friend of mine who speaks Japanese natively on Eida's word choice, and he said that while "girl talk" is closer on the basis of it being a casual/slang term, it's gender-neutral and is more about people "talking about their love."

In other words, "we're both chatting about love" or "we're having a love talk" would probably be the most accurate ways to translate it.

At this point, I want to bring attention to Daemon and Mitsuki's reactions to what Eida just said:

Daemon is flabbergasted, only able to say "Huh...?" while Mitsuki blushes for a second, then turns away and says "Well... I guess it didn't matter."

What exactly would Daemon be surprised about, if not the implication that Mitsuki loves someone who isn't Eida (and a guy, no less)? Why would he be showing that surprise now, instead of when Mitsuki allegedly announced that he loved Kawaki a few pages ago?

Likewise, while Mitsuki blushing around Eida isn't unusual, he actually spent the vast majority of this conversation remarkably composed. He only blushed for a single panel when he first noticed Eida was in the area, so having it come back after he's basically called out for being in love (real love, as it was already established that they both knew his feelings for Eida are fabricated) is a very deliberate choice.

While Mitsuki doesn't always emote very much, we can assume he was taken a little off-guard here - and again, if he was already confident enough in his love for Kawaki, why this reaction? Why all the talk before now about how he wasn't sure he'd know what romance felt like without Eida's ability?

The only conclusion I can make is that, in the first page, he's not saying "I don't know why I love Kawaki" like in the VIZ translation. It's much more likely that he's saying "I don't know why you love Kawaki." That's the only way that Mitsuki's feelings for Kawaki can be treated as a reveal, to both Daemon and himself.

And given that his love for Kawaki stems from his love for Boruto, due to the memory swap... yeah, if his side of Mitsuboru wasn't canon before, I think it's safe to say that it is now. Now excuse me while I go be extremely sane and normal about this information

My conclusion about People who want Boruto to beat up Mitsuki, it just dudes that,

1. Just wanna see fight while ignoring the history and relationship about those 2 characters. Or,

2. Just simply dislike Mitsuki.

I know Boruto way stronger and maybe Mitsuki will lose (bcs it's obvious). But i believe Boruto would never hurt Mitsuki.

Well, can't help it. Heteronormative still common in society and seeing homo couple isn't normal for them. Also, it's hard and almost impossible to get homo couple canon in shounen manga/anime (the reason i never hope about it). That's why no wonder people didn't notice about borumitsu relationship (which is sad 😩). But yeah, at least i wish they end up together like gai and kakashi. Who spending time with eo and ejoying life.

And about them being brother, true, they're not. Cmiiw, bcs as far i know, none of them declares that they're like brother. Just Sarada to Boruto, at Funato clan arc.

Boruto x Mitsuki are not brothers. They are a homoerotic trope. Please just admit that.

I think it's really interesting how people are quick to ship or create a romantic attraction between a man and a woman in media. It literally doesn't matter how forced or nonsensical it is. There almost always has to be some sexual element or tension as if a woman (any woman) is simply a prize to be won.

I mean I remember witnessing this phenomenon when watching one or the Marvel Thor movies. He kissed his female companion. Only for them to both admit that it was weird and superfluous. Then I say the same thing with the Captain America character. When Agent Carter died, he bedded her granddaughter. However, he went back in time to marry Agent Carter, so he technically married his granddaughter.

Anyway my point is this. People are kick to imply romantic intentions where there is none between men and women, but are super quick to dismiss romantic intentions in the face of over homoeroticism.

Listen! Whether or not Mitsuki and Boruto ever become cannon, they are classifiably a homoerotic pairing. I would agree that they are easily far more homoerotic than Sasuke x Naruto and Gai x Kakashi.

That's why it's sooo annoying when people are like Boruto and Mitsuki are brothers. Mitsuki loves and protects Boruto like a little brother.

No. Make it make sense. Mitsuki violates the dynamics of being an older brother to Boruto. He protects Boruto but simultaneously looks up to and admires Boruto. Those last two aren't consistent with an older brother trope. He uses Boruto as his light and guidance, not the other way around.

Also, the Naruto series has used the following words to describe non-familial intimate male relationships in the series:

Brothers: Naruto x Sasuke, Boruto x Kawaki

Rivals: Kakashi x Gai, Kakashi x Obito

Best Friends: Shikamaru x Choji.

You know what relationship is an intimate male pairing that has not been described with the following words in 86 chapters and 7 years: Boruto x Mitsuki.

At best, Boruro x Mitsuki could be classified under best friend. However, I would argue that the two of them have the most intimate relationship on this list emotionally and it has yet to be given a platonic explanation.

The anime has even hinted multiple times that Boruto is aware of Mitsuki's homoeroticism. It makes Boruto feel weird at times, but he has never once used it to create space between him and Mitsuki. He even declared that Mitsuki and he share a special relationship, and he was deeply hurt when Mitsuki deserted the leaf.

I will never understand how so called Naruto experts can reference chapter 69 of Boruto as proof of Sarada's feelings for Boruto, and then completely ignore it as evidence of Mitsuki's feelings for Boruto!

Mitsuki: So, do you like him?

Sarada: That's not the point.

Mitsuki: It must be hard to know one's own true feelings.

Sarada: You're one to speak Mitsuki. Your eyes always light up when you see him!
