“I honestly can’t remember being this hot.” Ruby confessed. “I’m not looking forward to the rest of the summer. Is it any better in winter?”
“Honestly, I have not missed Arizona summers,” Jacky admitted, using the papers she had once been writing on to fan herself. “It’s muggy in New York, but never this bad.”

he’s ready to tell them to get lost, walk away, return to his trailer and grab a beer. he could catch a few more snoozes, find something to hunt with his son later. but with a face like that, it must be too easy to fall prey for them. declan bites back a smile, “listen darl, just for you, i’ll let you in for free after ten tonight.” see where it goes from there, hopefully well for him. “us employees can allow free entry to our.. friends. i was thinkin’ about bringin’ my good mate, but if yeh want, i’ll take a lovely little thing such as yourself. we can ride all the rides, eat all the sugary goodness.” he pauses, leans back against the gate. “but of course it’s all up to what yeh want.”
A fierce blush creeped up Ruby’s neck, surprised by the sudden proposition. They caught the man’s tone and the subtext of course, how could they not?, and felt the familiar combination of disgust and confused flattery rise like bile in their throat.
“I uh, that’s nice and all, but I got..I have a...” What was the right word? ‘Boyfriend was far too kind, and even ‘associate’ implied a degree of friendliness, even if it was only professional. Ruby knew of no word to adequately describe his relationship to them.
But then again, why should Ruby care about what he thinks? What more could he possibly do to them? And besides, no one had to know. So long as Ruby and this man kept their mouths shut, nothing would have to change.
“Actually, yeah, I’ll take you up on that.” They smile widely, feeling a thrill at this bucking of his authority, even if it was relatively slight. “Thanks. I’m Ruby by the way.”

“Oh.” Ruby cast their eyes downwards, unable to hide their disappointment. They should’ve expected really, even in a so called ‘secular age’, the tradition of resting on Sunday had yet to die away. But still. It would’ve been nice to check out the rides. They had only just been allowed to get a job, and had wanted to spend their first paycheck on something that might’ve been able to make them happy since leaving home.
Yet again the world was flipping off Ruby as hard as it possibly could.
“Will you be open tomorrow?” They look up at the man nervously, chewing their bottom lip. “No one will have a problem with you being open on Monday will they?”
“we closed on sundays,” lie, he just doesn’t want anymore annoying customers coming through the gates. and the idea of locking the ones that remained inside, was funny. “it’s a holy day and the missionaries won’t get off me dick about it.”

did i really just see [ COURTNEY EATON ]? nah, that’s just [ RUBY SLOANE ], also known as [ THE DOE ] of saguaro hills. apparently, they’re a [ TWENTY ] year old [ WAITRESS ], which is probably why they’ve lived in [ CANYON COURT ] for [ TWO WEEKS ]. i heard that [ THEY ] are known to be very [ SWEET & PATIENT ], but watch out — on their bad days, they can also become very [ MOODY & DEFENSIVE ]. maybe that’s why they came here to [ BE WITH THEIR BOYFRIEND ].
what up it’s cody with another muse already dfndfognfdj ok so ive had ruby in the works for a bit but despite that i dont have their whole story sussed but here’s what u need to know!!! tw for csa, sexual coercion, abuse, addiction,
born and raised in wellington, specifically porirua, by their mum because their dad peaced out when ruby was still in the womb lmao. their mum tried but when ur a poor 22 year old struggling with addiction life aint easy.
despite the struggles ruby and their mum were close and would remain so for most of ruby’s life
keyword: most
when ruby was eight their mum went into rehab and they were put into foster care and soon fostered by a family who lived in thorndon. the couple had long wanted children and ruby seemed to be the answer to their prayers.
but one man’s answered prayer is another’s entrance into hell. ruby’s foster father was particularly fond of his new child, and would often sneak into ruby’s room.
ruby got very good at pretending to be asleep
as puberty struck, ruby began to gain attention due to being very pretty. ruby was left feeling repulsed and enthralled by this attention, a state of being that often confused them. but on more than one occasion they were coaxed into a boy’s arms (and later their beds)
adolescence proved to be a terrible beast. by this point ruby had been abused by years, with no one any the wiser, and they had gained a reputation for being ‘promiscuous’, largely because the thought of refusing to sexually satisfy boys had never occurred to them
they were particularly popular with older boys, all of whom were more than willing to let ruby eat out of their hands
but erratic mood swings had also crept into the picture, along with debilitating depression and anxieties about their future, and who they are as a person. like their mum before them, ruby turned to weed and alcohol in order to cope, and both of these substances were readily supplied by the older boys ruby favoured
while at first ruby’s promiscusity and addiction was known only to their peer group, eventually the school got wind of it and told ruby’s foster parents, who had very different reactions. ruby’s foster mum was sympathetic, as she works with addicts for a living, and sought to get ruby professional help. their foster father however was enraged, but only in private, and he would punish ruby for ‘giving away what belonged to [him]’
ruby’s foster mum hoped that therapy would help, but it would only lead to what would become arguably the worst chapter in ruby’s life
at first the therapist was kind, gentle, and he let ruby reveal everything in their own time. there was never any pressure or sense of obligation to tell him anything, two things that ruby had long learned to associate with men. it didn’t take long for ruby to become utterly devoted to their therapist
(ruby would soon discover that the feeling was more than mutual, but on a much darker scale)
when ruby’s therapist first made a sexual pass, ruby had become so utterly infatuated and devoted, latching onto their therapist as a source of comfort, that they made no protests. they were elated, beyond elated, to find a man who seemed to care for them
keyword: seemed
after ruby graduated from secondary school they took a hospitality course in order to make it easier to find a job, despite their therapist insisting that he could provide for them. as it turned out, ruby thrived in the hospitality industry, their sweet disposition and staunch work ethic earning them many glowing reviews
within a year they were a supervisor at the cafe where they worked, the youngest in the establishment’s history.
that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. with no warning, ruby’s therapist quit his job and convinced ruby to run off to the states with him. at this point ruby was still deliriously infatuated, to the point of believing themselves to be in love, that they agreed
it’s been a good few months since arriving in the states, and here is where ruby stands: they are no longer under their former therapist’s, now boyfriend’s, spell. facing what they have grown to recognise as mental and emotional abuse day after day, they have grown to fear him, but fear being away from him more. where could they go? what could they do? for now they remain by his side, feeling less like a significant other, and more like a prisoner
