my personal take on why being a customer seems to do something evil to the general public is because people who feel otherwise inadequate in life use customer service as an emotional outlet since it's an easy way you can have power over someone as an average person. this would also explain why some customers seem to WANT you to be mad at them rather than deescalate the situation: you're a stand-in for their ex wife.
